Celilo Falls - Native American Tribal Fishing Area
Scenes of Native fishermen dip net salmon fishing at Celilo Falls (Ceilo Falls) on the Columbia River in the early 1950s before the site was submerged by the Dalles Dam.
Scenes of a cable car used by Native fishermen as transportation from the shore of the Columbia River to fishing islands in the river at Celilo Falls. Another scene of a cable car as it moves low over the flow of the river.
CU scenes of Native fishermen standing on a small wooden platform attached to a rocky cliff using dipnets to catch salmon. Fisherman with safety rope tied around his waist.
Note: All this changed on the morning of March 10, 1957, when the massive gates of The Dalles Dam closed and choked back the downstream surge of the Columbia River. Four and a half hours later and eight miles upstream, Celilo Falls, the spectacular natural wonder and the age-old Indian salmon fishery associated with it was under water.
