The Atomic Bomb And Russia Declares War - Japan Is Doomed

In a series of meetings in Potsdam Germany the final doom of Japan is settled. President Harry S. Truman, Prime Minister Clement Attlee and Russian Dictator Joseph Stalin seated. Japanese port cities feel the full destructive force of Allied air power as the final assault on Japan begins. American B-29 Superfortress bombers in flight and a carrier task force underway at sea. Scenes of air attacks on Japan.

Animation is used to illustrate the destructive power of an atomic bomb compared to Britain’s Grand Slam or Earthquake Bomb. A British RAF aircraft dropping a Grand Slam bomb, the most powerful non-atomic bomb used in WWII.

The Manhattan Project, a code name that was given to a research and development project that produced the first nuclear weapon or Atomic Bomb during WWII. In 1932 Dr. Ernest O. Lawrence and his colleagues M. Stanley Livingston and Milton White successfully operated the first cyclotron on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Dr. Ernest O. Lawrence is shown seated at a large instrument panel.

General Leslie Groves, in charge of the entire Manhattan Project, and the two scientists, Dr. Vannevar Bush, head of the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development, and Dr. Richard Tolman, scientific advisor to General Groves.

Canadian uranium mining operations. Quantities of uranium is mined and shipped from Alberta, Canada to be used in the atomic bomb. Uranium was selected due to the mineral’s atomic structure.

Two giant vacant areas of the United States were purchased and developed for the Manhattan Project, a 600,000 acre project at Richland, Washington and a gigantic manufacturing area in Tennessee that became know as Oak Ridge. The Hanford site manufactured the Plutonium for the first atomic bomb and Oak Ridge TN developed and manufactured the atomic bomb.

At the insistence of the United States and Britain, Russia declares war on Japan. Scenes of a Russian military parade of weapons and troops in Moscow Red Square in 1945.

President Truman warns Japan that its war-making capacity will be totally destroyed and that it will be completely engulfed by sea and land forces if they did not accept terms of surrender. Japan refused to heed the Allies warning.
