NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1958 (UE58021)

“DEAD” A-BOMB HITS U.S. TOWN:
A Strategic Air command jet is forced by a defective bomb-dropping mechanism to jettison an atomic bomb over Florence, South Carolina. The nuclear weapon is not activated for use, and there is no A-blast, but it’s TNT “trigger” explodes, devastating a private home, and laying waste a large area.

SUB SCHOOL:
At Pearl Harbor, the Navy’s Submarine School teaches underwater escape techniques with dramatic realism. Trainees must leave a flooded compartment in a sub 50 feet below surface.

TUNNEL A-BLAST:
The explosion of an atomic bomb in a Nevada tunnel last summer makes news today with the disclosure that it’s shock was detected in Alaska, over 2,000 miles away.

AUTOMATIC FACTORY:
In Los Angeles, the first electronically controlled all-automatic factory, with a production line of machine tools doing precision aircraft work under control of an electronic computer!

FASHION PARADE:
Newest creations of Italian designers, parade in swank Rome salons, reveal increasing emphasis on balloon skirts and harem hemlines, rather than the Parisian sack.

APOLLO ’58 is chosen in Paris – not for muscles alone, but for intellect as well. So say the sponsor, but the contestants wiggle a wicked tricep.

THIRD VANGUARD SUCCESSFUL – MOON IS LAUNCHED:
After a long, seemingly jinxed experimental phase, Project Vanguard scores a bulls-eye on the third attempt. On two previous tries, the advanced multi-stage rockets failed. Now, at Cape Canaveral, the big second “moon” into orbit.

MONACO ACCLAIMS NEW CROWN PRINCE:
A 101 gun salute signals the birth of a second child, a son, Prince and heir apparent, to Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco. Jubilation and merry-making far into the night fill the picturesque Riviera principality.

ST. LAWRENCE ICE:
The Canadian ice-breaker d’Iberville battles through the frozen St. Lawrence River to free a channel for Montreal. A week-long battle with winter’s last rampart.

BRUSSELS FAIR:
As opening date draws near, the elaborate national Pavilions at the Brussels World’s Fair are rushed to completion. On highlight of the transportation show, a diorama of the world of the future.

DELANY SETS NEW INDOOR MILE MARK:
In the Chicago Relays, top Mid-western indoor track event, Ron Delany scores his 28th consecutive victory, and sets a new world’s record, an event long-awaited by track fans. It’s a sensational performance by the man who runs only to win, not to beat the clock.

WORLD SKI-JUMP CHAMPIONSHIPS:
In Finland, 100,000 spectators are on hand for the world ski-jump championships. Competitors come from as far as Japan, but it’s a local boy who’s jumped here since the age of 12, who captures top honors with a graceful 242-foot flight.

24 DIE IN LOFT FIRE:
A flash fire in a downtown New York loft building kills 18 women and 6 men. 15 more were seriously injured in the panic-filled flaming factory building. New York’s worst fire in 12 years.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER SAYS TAXES WILL BE CUT IF NECESSARY:
In Washington, D.C., the President addresses a luncheon meeting of 1,800 cheering Republican women and tells of administration plans to meet the recession.

ROMAN WINE JAR:
In New York City, a Roman amphora, 2,000 years old, is presented to American businessman A.N. Spanel for his efforts to help Franco-American relations.

STUDENTS BUILD SCHOOL:
In Rockland County, N.Y., 100 high school students pitch in to build a modern school for handicapped children.

FLYING SAUCER:
One of the oddest sights in the sky, a huge dish-shaped radar antenna atop a long range Navy patrol plane, is shown over the Massachusetts coast.

TRAVELING OPERA:
On Formosa, visit to a traveling Chinese Opera brings its traditional and elaborate drama of good guy and villain to farming villages.

EUROPEAN BOXING CROWN:
Charles Humez, European middleweight champ, defends his crown against Germany’s Bubi Scholz in Paris. An action-packed bout that ends in a decision for the champ.

FIRST FILMS – INDONESIA REBELLION:
On Sumatra, Russian-aided government forces move against the rebel forces fighting in protest of the central government’s pro-Communist policies.

KHRUSHCHEV NEW RED PREMIER:
The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet names party boss Khrushchev as Premier, formally combining in one man the two most powerful posts in the USSR.

HOLAND HAILS QUEEN:
On the final day of her three-day State visit to Holland, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth receives a spectacular farewell from the City of Rotterdam.

POLAR DOG DISCHARGED:
The U.S. Navy bestows an honorable discharge on Bravo, a Husky who wintered at the South Pole, and who is so applied he does not believe he is a dog!

GRAND NATIONAL WON BY “MR. WHAT”:
Irish-bred “MR. WHAT”, an 18-to-one entry, is victor of this year’s Grand National, the world’s most famous, toughest, and most spectacular steeplechase, by thirty lengths.

Just-released Defense Department films show a spectacular series of missile crashes. Not failures – but the results of test flights, the blazing finales of which lighted the engineers’ path of progress to final success.

Funeral of W.C. Handy, famed as “Father of the Blues” draws record crowds in New York City – honoring the memory of the composer of “St. Louis Blues” and many other jazz classics.

VIVE L’ HONNEUR:
In France, where such things are still understood, the Marquis de Cuevas and choreographer Serge Lifar meet on the field of honor to settle an artistic dispute.

SWIM FASHIONS:
High-fashion swim suits for the summer ahead are previewed in San Francisco, California. Vibrant citrus colors contrast with cool hues in advanced stylings.

CANCER CRUSADE:
At the White House, Mrs. Dwight Eisenhower accepts a symbolic Sword of Hope to signal the opening of Cancer Control Month, a nation-wide crusade for funds.

LAST SKIS OF WINTER:
At the big slide of Oberstdorf in the Bavarian Alps, top ski-jumpers gather for the last
meet of the season. The farewell to winter produces some of the year’s most thrilling ski-
scenes.

KID BOXING:
At Annapolis, Maryland, future Admirals still in rompers mix it up in this year’s edition of the annual event for the peewee pummellers. Game little scrappers who are just about outweighed by their massive gloves.

CALIFORNIA FLOODS FOLLOW SPRING RAINS:
Over a week and a half of torrential rains, gale winds, hail and snow leave California suffering from the worst floods in 50 years, with new storms on the way to add to the State’s woes.

EASTER MESSAGE:
In Rome, Italy, Pope Pius XII addresses a quarter of a million Easter pilgrims, calling on world leaders to sacrifice for peace.

IN NEW YORK:
The Easter Parade is washed out by the heaviest rain in 40 years!

BIGGEST NON-A BLAST:
Canada sets off one of the mightiest non-atomic explosions ever, to blast out a Pacific Coast shipping hazard, with 1,375 tons of high explosive.

FASHION PARADE:
In Toronto, Canada, the first showing of high fashion Paris originals on this side of the Atlantic. The “trapeze” line, bold geometry and short hems, is featured.

TRACK RIVALRY SETTLED:
At Big Springs, Texas, sprint rivals Dave Sime and Bobby Morrow meet in a long-awaited contest. Sime edges Morrow by a foot and a half, despite 20 mph winds.

MASTERS’ GOLF:
At the Augusta, Georgia, National Course, a new star from Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Arnold Palmer, defeats the old masters in the 22nd annual M<asters’ Golf Championship.

CUBA AND CASTRO: FIRST FILMS
First films from the mountain stronghold of Cuban rebel leader Fidel Castro, made just before fighting erupted across the island. Scenes show the ragged but determined rebel band in their daily life, making their own weapons, and waging the sabotage campaign that paralyzed all of Oriente Province.

QUEEN TOASTS R.A.F.:
The Royal Air Force’s 40th Birthday is marked by one of Britain’s most notable gatherings. Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, 8 members of the Royal Family head the list at a sparkling dinner of celebration.

TIPS FOR TOPPERS:
New hats for summer, showcased by some of America’s top millinery creators. The emphasis is on the light and airy effect, with some interesting “convertibles” shown, including a beach-bag and turban combination!

JOLTIN’ JALOPPIES:
In Dallas, a field of joltin’ – jitterin’ jalopies thunders around the course in the Devil’s Bowl, like an auto boneyard come to life. The champ, repeating triumph for the 4th time is A.D. Trowell.

SIX YEAR OLD GOLF PRO:
Introducing Linda Lewis, only six years old and a golf wizard already Linda’s dad is a golf comedian and a trick shot artist, and he has taught his little girl so well, she has stolen the act!
