NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1965 (UE65012)

QUEEN ELIZABETH RECEIVES ETHIOPIAN OVATION:
The ancient Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa welcomes Queen Elizabeth as the British Monarch is greeted by the Lion of Judah, Emperor Haile Selassie – the first formal visit there by any British ruler. The capital city is all spruced up for the occasion and tribesmen put on a native show for the Queen.


RETURN FROM VIETNAM:
The first group of American wounded in guerrilla raids on the Vietnam front, arrive back in the United States. Even as they land in the U.S., new Vietcong bombing attacks take more American lives. Also returning are the first of 1,829 dependents who had been ordered home.


FIRST JOB CORPS CENTER OPENS:
One phase of the anti-poverty program gets underway at Thurmont, Maryland, as the first of 25,000 Job Corps trainees arrive in camp. During their year’s stay, they will learn new skills and spend some time on conservation programs.


HOW TO GET A QUICK LIFT:
The airplane that man has dreamed about for many decades has become a reality. The XC-142-A can take off vertically, then straighten motors and wings for 400 MPH flight. It could land on a tennis court with 32 troops aboard. It’s civilian uses are limitless.

BASEBALL GOES UNDERCOVER:
As the Big League teams begin spring training, the National League Astros give a preview of their new stadium in Houston, Texas. The playing field is covered with a dome 20 stories in height. Now, if it rains, you can say, “Let it rain – let’s go to the ball game”.

REPORT FROM VIETNAM
The frustrating war in Vietnam is not only a battle against the Vietcong but against another formidable enemy – the jungle! It is a series of minor battles, small pockets of action like the one pictured here. Loyal government troops flush the Red rebels from foxholes near Saigon and kill 82 with the loss of 8 government men.

SNOW CAN BE BEAUTIFUL:
In Japan they don’t just sit around a hot habachi and wait for spring when it snows. They hold a festival with towering ice sculptures that attracts people from all over the nation. It’s a sad day when warm weather arrives and the show goes down the drain.

“STRANGE BEDFELLOLWS” MEANS BEAUTY:
The world premiere of the new Universal comedy, “Strange Bedfellows” is a gala affair in Florida. They dedicate a new plush theatre in Hollywood, Florida and hold a beauty contest to select “Miss Gina” – named for the picture’s star, Gina Lollobrigida. Gig Young, who is also in “Strange Bedfellows”, does the honors for the beauty winner.

TRACK RECORDS FALL IN TWO MEETS:
The indoor track season jumps off to a record start on both the East and West Coast. Mary Rand of Britain set a new broad jump record in Los Angeles, beating the old mark by more than a foot. In New York, Tom Farrell sets a new record in the half-mile race as he battles Bill Crothers of Toronto down to the wire. His new mark topples the record held by speedster Peter Snell of New Zealand.

WATER FOR GITMO:
A year-long shortage of water at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo, Cuba, comes to an end as three distilling plants go into operation.

Castro rationed the water – we answered by cutting off the pipe line and tanking it in from the States.

The base is now self-sufficient – as far as water is concerned.

THE FIRST ENGINEER:
The Step Pyramid, near modern Cairo, was built 5,000 years ago by the world’s first engineer. Imhotep by name. For three decades a search has been on for his tomb. Recent discoveries point to new clues to the site of the tomb – where frescoes and ancient writings might be found to reveal more about this pre-Christian era genius.

THE ANIMAL CORNER:
It’s children’s day at the Taipei Zoological Garden on the Island of Formosa. You can’t get in unless accompanied by a child. The animals seem to sense they have a “something else” audience and put on one of their best performances.

GALS HIT THE SILK:
How are you going to keep ‘em in the kitchen after this??? Russian women are going in for the sport of parachuting in a big way. They start at 5,000 feet – but after test in high altitude chambers, they take off for the stratosphere for five and six mile jumps. Lady, it’s a long way down!!

NEW VIETNAM COUP
There has been another move in the chess game that is South Vietnamese politics. Strong man General Khanh is OUT as head of the Armed Forces. Colonel Thao, Khanh’s publicity man, attempted a coup that was put down by Khanh’s Generals. The Generals in turn tossed out Khanh. The next day they put themselves in power.

Meanwhile, more and more nations are pressuring the United States to sit down at the conference table – all the while American Jets are stepping up attacks on North Vietnam.

FRANCE EXHIBITS ART TREASURES:
A breath-taking collection of ecclesiastical art is assembled at France’s Museum of Decorative Arts. More than 500 of the nation’s towns and villages contribute to the first show of its kind since 1900.

It took 15 years to prepare for the exhibit. Probably the last of its kind.

JAPANESE PRINCE CELEBRATES:
Prince Hiro, second in line to the Imperial Throne, marks his 5th birthday. It’s just another day for the youngster sho romps with his mother – the commoner who married Japanese royalty. The Prince is being educated in Western manner for his future duties.

BASKETBALL
A VICTORY STREAK IS ENDED
The Providence basketball team, with a string of 19 victories dating back to last season, goes down to defeat finally at the hands of Villanova. It’s nip ‘n tuck in the first half – then the Wildcats edge into the lead. The Providence Friars go down fighting as Villanova winds up on top – 71 to 57.

MARINES BEGIN BUARD DUTY IN VIETNAM:
3,500 United States Marines head for security duty in South Vietnam, landing at a beach north of DaNang, where they will guard the American jet airfield against attack by Vietcong guerrillas. Washington word is that the duty of the Marines is strictly a defensive one but warns that they will shoot back if attacked. United States Marines always know what to do.

PARIS DESIGNERS SHOW CREATIONS:
The famous couturiers of Paris unveil their spring and summer fashions. Accent is on the feminine for day and night. It is night time especially when Milady blossoms forth in all her glamour glory. Flimsy or sequined, voluminous or scant – it all adds up to GLAMOUR!

SUDDENLY…IT’S S P R I N G!
What the first Robis is to smaller towns, the International Flower Show is to the BIG city – the first harbinger of spring. Theme this year is “Patios – Nature’s Living Rooms”. Highlight of the show is the introduction to the public of the new John F. Kennedy Memorial Rose.

WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
The greatest performers in the figure skating world compete for championships at Colorado Springs. Canada’s Petra Burka is the outstanding free skater among the world’s amateur women. 16 year old Ethan Allen of New Jersey takes second place in the men’s event. Alain Calmat of France, second in the 1964 Olympics, gives a flawless performance to wind up KING OF THE ICE.

AIR UNITS RESCUE WOUNDED FROM JUNGLE:
Mechanical “Angels of Mercy” to wounded soldiers in the Vietnam war are the helicopters – flying ambulances that can easily penetrate the jungle and drop down to pick up the wounded who might otherwise die. Here is a typical action scene near Quinhon where government troops launched a successful drive to clear Route 19 – a vital link across South Vietnam.

UNEARTH RARE FIND:
In the modern City of Alexandria, Egypt, a valuable archeological find is being unearthed near the center of town. It is the ruins of ancient baths that were constructed 2,000 years ago. They were much like our modern Turkish baths – with hot and cold rooms.

HAIR RAISING STYLES:
Here are the hair styles to go with the new Paris creations, at least, that’s what they say in fashion circles. The hair-dos are be-jeweled! Be-lacquered, beguiling and be-labored! But are they becoming?

SLALOM TITLE TEST:
Professional skiing is moving into the Big Leagues with a series of downhill events for the “Big Money”. At Windham, N.Y., they hold the second of three meets for the Slalom Crown. The winner is Hias Leitner – holding a fistful of prizes, in cold cash, of course.

RACERS TEST CARS FOR INDIANAPOLIS:
With May 31 and the Indianapolis “500” speed classic just around the corner – test tracks are bussing as cars are tuned up for the big event. Tires have been improved and will bring a more thrilling race to those at the track and to the millions who will witness the classic on M. C. A. closed-circuit television.
