NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1967 (UE67041)

VIET ACTION
In back-and-forth fighting, U.S. airbases are blasted by Vietcong; U.S. Marines clobber the enemy at Hills 861 and 881; Marine pilots blast Cong missile sites violating the neutral zone; and Marine ground troops clear a Vietcong village. In all, close to 12 hundred enemy killed.

LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL
The world's newest Catholic Cathedral, in Liverpool, erected at a cost of seven million dollars. It's arena-style, 290 feet in diameter. It holds 2,600 worshippers, all with a clear view of the main altar.

ISRAELI ANNIVERSARY
The 19th anniversary of the end of British rule in Palestine is celebrated by Israel against a background of tenseness in the Middle East. Syria and the United Arab Republic exchange threats with Israel; all three permit border military "build-ups."

JAPANESE ROYALTY
Prince Akihito and his wife, Princess Michiko, come to Buenos Aires for a four-day state visit. They arrive from Peru...and will next visit Brazil. The reception and troop-review occurs at the airport.

FILM STUDIO FIRE
Wind-whipped flames destroy ten acres and one million dollars worth of TV and film sets at Universal City Studios in Hollywood. Among those destroyed: "Laramie"..."Laredo" and "The Virginian"... as well as the European Street set for the classic war film, "All Quiet on the Western Front." Production not affected; Studio Tours continue; sets are immediately rebuilt.

IKE'S PAINTINGS
Former President Eisenhower shows some of his paintings at a New York exhibition. They included still life, landscapes, and portraits; one of them, Churchill. Ike calls his art just "daubs."

HORSE SHOW
Anton Ebben of Holland wins the Grand Prize at the International Riding Tournament in Weisbaden, Germany. America's Kathy Kusner gives a great performance but one "fault" plunges her to fourth place. Second, West Germany; third, Japan.

FROG-JUMPING
Mark Twain's mythical "Calaveras County" and the famous leaping-frog competition has a modern counterpart in a U.S. Army-sponsored preliminary in Frankfurt, Germany. The winner: 8-year old Jason Waterhouse whose frog, "King," leaped over ten feet. They'll both go to California for the finals.

ISRAEL-UAR
Tension in the Middle East: Israel: UAR forces blockade the Gulf of Aqaba; reservists are called up, and British and U.S. tourists flee the country. New York: The United Nations Security Council meets in emergency session. Russia rejects a U.S. Four-Power peace bid, joining Britain and France.

BRUSSELS FIRE
Some 400 are feared dead or missing in the tragic disastrous fire in one of Brussels biggest department stores. Arson is being investigated. Pro-Chinese Communists are believed to have made threats.

SPEEDY TRAIN
The U.S. Government makes a test run of its new electrical train on solid, welded tracks. It hits 156 MPH and is just as silent as it is swift. In the fall, it'll out a half-hour from the Boston-New York-Washington run.

NEW YORK CITY HALL
Movie Stars and extras take over Manhattan's City Hall to film a sequence in Universal's "What's So Bad about Feeling Good?" Mary Tyler Moore, George Peppard, cameramen, and crew swarm over the stately hall's rotunda.

FASHIONS
London designers show Fall Fashions. Included: capes, high collars, highway-robber outfits, complete with mask and two flint-guns. More practical: black tunics and long, V-necked white wools for evening.

BIKE RACE
Spain's Antonio Gomez Del Moral takes the 140-mile bike race from Alessandria to La Spezia, Italy. Second: Italy's Silvano Schiavon; third, Germany's Rudi Altig, This year's race marks its 50th birthday.

AKIHITO
Crown Prince Akihito and his wife visit an Argentine cattle ranch, outside Buenos Aires, They feast on barbecued roast, then watch gauchos taming young colts. Royalty....on the Pampas!
NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1967 (UE67044)

VIETNAM
A step-up in both the air war with bombs smashing MIG bases, even power plants in the heart of Hanoi and targets in Haiphong. Cong saboteurs blow up a train near Saigon while furious fighting in the demilitarized zone flushes out many refugee women and children.

LOG-BALLOONS
Canadian loggers are now using log-lifting balloons which can lift giants up to three tons, drag eight-tonners out of thick forest. It'll save men and immature trees from injury, and much road-building costs.

FLAG-WAVERS
Italian flag-wavers thrill thousands at Manhattan's Rockefeller Plaza skating rink, now showing its new Spring-Summer face. The troupe dates back to the Middle Ages and the pageantry of the Crusades.

YOKOHAMA FESTIVAL
Carnival in the Far East as the port city of Yokohama observes its 100th anniversary of entering into foreign trade with a five-day Festival, it's 15th such event. The massive Masquerade Parade is the big hit, complete with floats, girls, a dragon dance, kids and balloons.

SUMMER FASHIONS
In Paris, the latest beachware is shown and it includes mini-skirted shifts with pleated trim, a "Bat Woman" and "Robin" ensemble, floral designs and prints...and beach hip-huggers with flower-petal bras!

KINETIC ART
Newest thing in sculpture is motion. Sheldon Machline creates this by linking up things like weights, balls, springs, into what he calls "kinetic sculpture." They look like arty "Tinker-Toys!"

SPACE ROUNDUP
Pasadena: ESTRO II, radiation monitor for the world, ready for launch. Pasadena: Lunar Orbitor Four sends best moon-shots yet. Pasadena: Surveyor Three digs a tiny soil-sampling moon-trench. Utah: Twin-Pershing missiles in successful simultaneous launch.

UNITED NATIONS DEBATE
The Mid-East crisis brings strong debate in the United Nations Security Council. U Thant urges a "cooling off" period. The U.S. supports it; Russia does not, clashing with the U.S. The UAR claims the Gulf of Aqaba belongs to it while Israel demands an end to the blockade.

JOHN F. KENNEDY LAUNCHING
The aircraft carrier, "John F. Kennedy" is launched at Newport News, Virginia. The late President's 9-year old daughter, Caroline, christens the giant ship with the traditional bottle of champagne. President Johnson spoke briefly before the launching.

WALTER LANTZ
Walter Lantz, last of the great pioneer animated cartoonists is fated at a Universal City Studios party, honoring his 50 years as a film industry leader. It's also "Woody Woodpecker's" 25th birthday, and Lantz's 39th year with Universal.

TRACK
The California Relays feature a world-record-equaling 100 meter dash as Jim Hines, Texas Southern Junior, runs it in ten seconds, flat. In the 220 yard sprint, Tommie Smith of San Jose State is just three-tenths of a second off his own world record.

WHITEY FORD
"Whitey" Ford retires at Yankee Stadium and is given a standing ovation. A bone spur in his pitching arm ends his playing days, which included 236 victories, highest major-league total today. He'll continue with the Yankees as a scout.

BUCKPASSER'S 15TH STRAIGHT
"Buckpasser" wins the Metropolitan at Aqueduct for his fifteenth consecutive win, making him third-highest earner in racing, next to Kelso and Roundtable, both retired.

THE "500"
The Indianapolis "500" resumes after a first-day halt because of rain, Parnelli Jones, leading all the way, has a car-breakdown as his turbine-racer quits with only three laps to go. Winner: A.J. Foyt, averaging over 151 mph, taking his third "Indie" victory and leaving over $171,000.

DUAL WORLD PREMIERE
The Texas cities of Dallas and Fort Worth go "all out" to stage a precedent-setting, dual-city World Premiere for Universal's "The War Wagon," starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Stars at the three-day festivities include John Wayne. Cowboy bands, Indian dancers, stars, celebrities, all add to the excitement and glamour.
