NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1967 (UE67101)

NATO
The Big Four foreign ministers meet before the first NATO session in Brussels. NATO adopts a new "flexible response" military strategy, replacing the massive retaliation plan.

NEW GIANT JET
The "Concorde," built jointly by the British and French, makes its debut. Carrying over 140 passengers, it's expected to cut the U.S.-Europe flight time in half when it goes into service in 1971.

FINLAND
Finland observes 50 years of independence from Russia in a national celebration which includes a memorial to her war dead, and a gigantic formal reception for diplomats.

TELESCOPE
The largest telescope in Europe goes into operation in England. The 8-foot-wide mirror will transfer the images of distant stars to photographic plates. It's accurate to one-millionth of an inch.

BETHLEHEM
Tourists and religious pilgrims flock to Bethlehem to observe Christmas and view the sacred spots such as the Church of the Nativity. It's the most unrestricted observance in 20 years.

TREE
Santa comes by minicar to place the star on top of the National Christmas Tree on the White House lawn. The tree, a 70-foot beauty, is lighted as part of President Johnson's annual "Pageant of Peace."

FASHIONS
Spring fashions from Tunisia have that "Scheherazade" look and feature ottoman dresses and floor-length gowns; sheer capes over bare backs; even a wedding gown made like a Tunisian burnoose.

RAIDERS-OILERS
A Hewritt Dixon T.D. and four field goals by George Blends beat the Houston Oilers, 19-7. The victory makes the Oakland Raiders AFL Western Division champions.

SOUTHWEST SNOW
Six days of blizzards maroon huge areas of the Southwest. Six deaths are reported and many Indian reservations are isolated. Air Force helicopters air-drop food, medicine, and feed the livestock and wild game.

OIL FIRE
A half-million gallons of oil feed spectacular flames at Los Angeles' "El Segundo" refinery. The first was started when a bolt of lightning ignited a wooden cover to an oil reservoir.

PLANE CRASH
An Air Force jet smashes into a Tucson supermarket, killing five and injuring seventeen. The pilot failed in an attempt to steer his crippled craft to a nearby gold course.

SCULPTURE
New York begins its "Sculpture of the Month" project by installing Clement Meadmore's two-ton work, "Upstart" on Fifth Avenue at Central Park. Each month, a new contemporary work will be shown.

HYDROFOIL GUNBOAT
The Navy unveils its new hydrofoil gunboat, "Tucumcari." It can hit speeds of 40 knots an hour and will carry a 40-millimeter gun, a mortar, and two sets of twin machine-guns.

QUINTUPLET WEDS
A Buenos Aires wedding reveals the fact that the groom, Franco Dilligenti, is one of the quintuplets born 23 years ago but kept hidden from the public. His wealthy father was determined to raise the quints without publicity.

THIRSTY BIRDS
Hundreds of thousands of birds die in one of Australia's worst drought in years. Livestock is also hard hit and forest fires add to the misery. The birds drown one another by sheer weight of numbers while flocking to a nearby water dam.

SKIING
Austria is the surprise winner over France in the first major skiing event of the season in Europe. Billy Kidd of the U.S. ties for second in the combined slalom in this Winter Olympic preview.

BOXING
Unbeaten heavyweight contender Joe Frazier stops Marion Conner in the third round for a TKO victory, his 19th straight win. He becomes the top candidate to take over Cassius Clay's crown.

OLYMPIC SITE
Construction moves forward in Mexico City, host for the '68 Olympics. A village to house 11,000 athletes and reporters, an 80,000-seat stadium, pool-gymnasium, and Sports Palace will all be completed on time.

ROTORCRAFT
The Army's Cheyenne," world's most advanced combat rotorcraft, flies horizontally or vertically, and can hit a silver dollar at a mile-and-half, It'll escort troop-carrying helicopters.

PAINTING
Monet's "La Terasse a Sainte Addresse" brings over one million dollars at a London art auction. The artist's father is believed included in the family garden scene overlooking the sea. The price is a London record for impressionistic art.

REFUELING
The Navy's twin-jet "Sky Warrior" spends its time in the Vietnam skies as a flying gas-station. It has saved over 400 combat planes with midair refueling, allowing them to make it back to their carriers.

OPERATION PERSHING
U.S. troops search villages in the Bong Son Plain area for Vietcong and sympathizers who may remain following a two-day battle. The Communist stronghold threatens all allied supply route.

ROBOT
The "Unimate" robot is an amazing by-product of automation, It does dull, difficult, or dangerous factory jobs, freeing ten men for better work elsewhere in the plant. It has an electronic memory for 200 separate movements and functions.

NEW HIGHWAY
The new 26-miles long highway across the Austrian Alps, connecting Munich and Venice, gets its first real test this winter. Built as an avalanche-free road, it cost thirty million and 14 workmen were killed during its construction.

SNOWMOBILES
The World Snowmobile Championship is held in Montreal and 28 international racers compete in speed and cross-country events. Over-all winner: Steve Ave of Hurley, Wisconsin.
