In late April 1945, Italian Communist partisans captured and executed Benito Mussolini along with his mistress Clara Petacci and several other high-ranking Fascist officials near Lake Como. The bodies were transported to Milan and publicly displayed in Piazzale Loreto, where they were hung upside down from a gas station gantry. Crowds gathered to jeer and strike the corpses in an act of retribution for years of Fascist rule and repression.
