Third Avenue El, neighborhood streets and community life in New York City
Black-and-white footage documents daily life in the South Bronx in 1965. The film records transportation, housing, commerce, recreation, churches and public spaces in neighborhoods whose residents were predominantly Black and Puerto Rican.
Scenes include: The Third Avenue El and passenger views from a moving train; tenements, rooftops, clotheslines and fire escapes; street traffic, storefronts, shoe-shine stands and fruit-and-vegetable vendors; children playing hopscotch, stickball and near fire hydrants; families, police patrols and young people on street corners; a mobile theater presenting García Lorca; sidewalk dominoes; churches; and a Sunday baseball game at St. Mary's Park.
