WASHINGTON, D.C. – Australian Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies arrives for talks with President Eisenhower and Secretary of State Dulles on top-level plans for defense of the Pacific area.

EASTER SEALS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the White House, 6 year old Billy Smith sells President Eisenhower the first sheet of Easter Seals to launch the 1955 fund drive for the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults.

YO-YO CONTEST:
SAN MATEO, CAL. – Finals of the State Yo-Yo Championships. 44 finalists out of 185,000 entrants vie for cash scholarship prizes, showing dazzling yo-yo stunts of their own invention. It’s worth stringing along for.

WHITE HOUSE PHOTO EXHIBIT:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House Press Photographers Association presents its annual display of prize winning photos. President Eisenhower presents fotog Bill Smith with the Grand Award and congratulates other winners.

NAVY GRIDDERS TRAIN:
ANAPOLIS – Spring training for Navy’s football squad. Coach Eddie Erdelatz oversees his Sugar Bowl champions in a series of spring set-ups to keep them in form for another successful season next fall.

PIGGY BACK TRAIN:
BOSTON – The newest thing in piggy-back railroad cars, a unique 75 foot dolly that can load two full-size highway trailers in two minutes, bringing road and rail together to speed freight and ease traffic.

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO:

BRITISH FILM AWARDS:
LONDON – The British Film Academy honors lovely German screen star Cornel Borgers as best foreign actress of the year. Just signed to a long-term U-I contract, she’ll star in Universal’s coming picture, “Better Than Before.”

GUIDED MISSLE “BOMBER KILLER”:
Spectacular scenes of the Air Force’s newest bomber-killer in action: the “Falcon,” a 100 pound guided missile carried aloft by jet fighter to unerringly track down and destroy a target that’s a still out of sight when the missile is released.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE:
NEW YORK CITY – St. Patrick’s Day, and thousands of loyal Celts turn out for the Wearin’ of the Green. The great parade up 5th Avenue is led by two 185-pound Irish Wolfhounds, mascots of the “Fighting Irish” regiment. A great day for the Irish.

CUSTOM CAR SHOW:
OAKLAND, CALIF. – Custom cars on display – nearly 100 in all, and every one individually designed and hand crafted. Striking innovations range from the futuristic “Bat” to a classy roadster with a tropical fish tank.

FRENCH HOCK SHOP:
PARIS – A visit to the greatest hock shop in France, and perhaps the most historic – and unique – in the world. Founded 200 years ago by Royal patent, its huge warehouses hold everything from household bric-a-brac to a fleet of motorcycles!

GALS BOYCOTT “BOY” CUTS:
CALIFORNIA – West Coast cuties unite to boycott the “boy” cuts, gathering en masse for new hairdos to sweep away the imported urchin look. New styles emphasize the trim and chic, and the girls cheerfully sign the “pledge” to boycott the “boy” cut.

U.S. LEADS IN PAN-AMERICAN GAMES:
MEXICO CITY – 2,000 athletes representing 21 hemisphere nations parade to open the Pan American Games with solemn Olympic protocol. The United States sweeps to an early lead in the games, which feature record shattering efforts in most events, despite the handicap of the thin air at the stadium’s mile high altitude, which makes the events grueling ordeals for competitors. An historic sports occasion.

TROOPS TAKE PART IN A-BOMB TEST:
NEVADA – Close up scenes of ground troops taking part in tests of the tactical atomic bomb. After a blast visible 100 miles away, soldiers are immediately brushed free of radioactive dust in field decontamination measures, and move into the target area for inspection of exposed vehicles.

CALIFORNIA URANIUM RUSH RECALLS ’49:
BAKERSFIELD, CAL. – History repeats itself. The gold fields of the Forty-Niners are the scene of another bonanza – uranium. Instead of the bearded “desert rats” of yore, the fair sex goes prospecting, armed with scintillometers, under scrutiny of the A.E.C. Uranium in them thar hills.

PATSY AWARDS:
NORTHRIDGE, CAL. – Animal stars of the year receive the PATSY awards of the American Humane Association. Top honors to “Diamond,” equine star of the picture “Black Horse Canyon,” and to Francis, the famous talking mule.

JAPANESE WAR DEAD:
JAPAN – Grieving throngs meet a funeral ship bearing the remains of 5,900 Japanese soldiers who died in the World War II Pacific campaign. After as long as 15 years on the islands, the ashes of the dead come home for burial.

GIANT TANK:
ENGLAND – England’s newest armored giant, the mighty 65 ton “Conqueror,” in its first public showing. Details are secret, but films reveal an awesome piece of artillery in Conqueror’s turret, and impressive speed and agility.

NCAA BASKETBALL:
KANSAS CITY, MO. – The nation’s top collegiate hoop quintets battle it out for the NCAA crown. LaSalle’s Explorers, sparked by All-American Tom Gola bow to the San Francisco Dons, whose own All-American Bill Russell stars in the 77-63 court thriller.

PAN AMERICAN GAMES:
MEXICO CITY – Track and field records topple in the Pan American Games, as the U.S. pushes its commanding lead still further in the point scores. In the hop, skip, and jump, hammer and discus throws, and women’s 100 meter dashes, new records thrill the crowds. An added thrill, the Rev. Bob Richards again captures the pole vault crown.

BARUCH TALKS ON U.S. ECONOMY:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bernard Baruch, elder statesman, financier, and adviser to presidents, gives his views on the nation’s economy in testimony before the Senate Banking and Currency Committee.

IKE AND STASSEN:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower appoints Harold Stassen to cabinet rank, as a “secretary for peace” charged with exploring every method by which disarmament and peace may be attained.

MODELS MODEL FOR MODELS:
NEW YORK CITY – Behind the scenes at a leading model studio, for a glimpse of the fashions that models model for themselves – comfortable casual sportswear, featuring slim styling and smartly tailored pockets and pleats.

HOME TOWN HONORS KIRK DOUGLAS:
ALBANY, N.Y. – A gala two-day home coming celebration greets screen star Kirk Douglas as he returns to the scenes of his boyhood for the premiere of his latest picture, Man Without A Star.

JOCKEY WINS 4500TH RACE:
ALBANY, CAL. – Jockey Johnny Lougden rides Big Star to victory – his 4500th racing triumph, and special ceremonies at the track honor the star rider.

OUTBOARD HELICOPTER:
BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – Inventor Lewis McCarty demonstrates his new midget helicopter, powered by an outboard racing motor, and weighing only 180 pounds. It must be seen to be believed.

UNDERWATER PLAYGROUND:
HOLLYWOOD, CAL. – An underwater playground for aqua-tots. Young swimming student swing, see-saw, and ride kiddy cars, all underwater. None older than 4 years – true water babies at play.

FRENCH VOTE ASSURES GERMAN REARMAMENT:
PARIS – The French Senate ratifies German rearmament after heated debate, settling the question that has toppled one regime after another in 5 years of national controversy. The vote is hailed as assuring a West European Union, a major stride in assuring a secure Western defense.

ICE JAM IN NIAGARA RIVER PERILS HOMES:
NIAGARA FALLS – Below the International Falls, the Niagara River freezes solid for the first time in 50 years, a 30 foot high ice jam that moves with glacial slowness, tearing into the shore line and ripping buildings from the foundation. As property damages reaches the millions, efforts to dynamite the jam prove futile.

GERMAN FILM STAR VISITS HOLLYWOOD:
HOLLYWOOD – German film star Cornel Borchers, winner of a British Oscar as best European actress of ’54 arrives in Hollywood. At Universal City, she’s escorted around the studio by Rock Hudson, who’ll star with the lovely actress in her first U-I film, “ A Time Remembered.”

ITALIAN PREMIER IN WASHINGTON:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Italy’s Premier Mario Scelba arrives for a 12 day good will visit. High on the agenda, policy talks with President Eisenhower on Italy’s continuing fight against Communism, internal and international.

IRISH HORSE WINS GRAND NATIONAL:
ENGLAND – The Grand National remains the world’s toughest steeplechase, with plenty of spills and excitements despite the lowering of several jumps. Run under tatrocious weather conditions, only 13 of 30 entries finish the course. Irish bred Quare Times romps home with lengths to spare to win the turf classic.

PACIFIC CRASH SURVIVORS:
SEATTLE – The Navy transport Bayfield returns to port with 19 survivors of a Stratocruiser crash at sea. 3 of those aboard perished in the near-freezing sea, drifting away while those on life rafts watched helplessly.

HARRIMANSPEAKS FOR U.J.A.:
NEW YORK – Governor Averill Harriman speaks on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, calling for support of the fund’s 1954 campaign.

ATOM BLAST TESTS MEN AND MACHINES:
YUCCA FLATS, NEV. – Within minutes after a tactical A-bomb is detonated, 2,000 Marines speed into the target area via a mass helicopter lift in a spectacular test of men and machines, in the first maneuver of its kind, paving the way for rapid exploitation of the A-bomb’s shock impact, by air power and infantry in future combat.

ACADEMY AWARDS:
HOLLYWOOLD, CAL. – Moviedom’s big night – the 27th annual Academy Award ceremonies. An excited, star-studded crowd looks on as Grace Kelly and Marlon Brando receive Oscars as best actress and actor of the year. U-I’s Les Carey gets an Oscar for his sound recording in the Glenn Miller Story.

FRISIAN FOLK WEDDING:
HOLLAND – The quaintness and sincerity of a bygone era lives again in a double wedding on the isolated Frisian Islands. And the merry-making of the old days returns too – living folk-lore, a charming, unique wedding day.

WINTER ENCORE:
QUEBEC – Old man winter defies the calendar to stage an encore performance with two days of record snows. The big blizzard engulfs the area in drifts that blanket cars, and reach up to the eaves of the houses. A field day for kids – but a bleak time for snowbound citizens.

IKE LAUNCHES POPPY, CANCER DRIVES:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower helps launch two important charity campaigns for 1955 in brief White House ceremonies – the V.F.W.’s “Buddy Poppy” campaign, and the Cancer Crusade.

HIGH DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
PANAMA – High divers plummet 120 feet into a puddle-size tank, a mere 6 feet deep. Thrilling displays of skill and iron nerves in competition for the world’s High Diving Championships.

CIRCUS OPENS:
NEW YORK CITY – The Biggest Show on Earth is back – the circus, with a new and exciting array of daredevil acts to thrill and chill youngsters of all ages. Stars of stage and screen take part in a super-special gala performance for charity, a colorful preview of the circus at its best.

BEAUTIFUL SPRING: DUST AND SNOW PLAGUES NATION
COLORADO – A black wind sweeps across the Western plains. Dust storms carry thousands of tons of topsoil, a burden of woe for farmers, housewives and just plain citizens. Across the continent, Sainte Croix, Quebec, digs out from drifts piled by three unseasonal blizzards. Snowbound for 3 weeks, it’s just back in touch with the outside world.

ATOMIC “SATCHEL CHARGE”:
NEVADA – Field troops take part in a “live” test of an atomic “satchel charge.” Detonated underground, the charge could be placed by one man, though it has the destructive power of 33 carloads of TNT.

“LITTLE” BERLIN BLOCKADE:
GERMANY – Reds step up the road tax for Berlin-bound trucks eleven-fold, clamping down on the free city’s economic life-line. It’s a new move in the Cold War, planned to force talks between Red East and Free West Germany.

RELIGIOUS PROTEST:
SPAIN – 120,000 take part in a mammoth demonstration against persecution of the church behind the Iron Curtain. Mass is said by a Polish priest, as thousands pray for modern religious martyrs.

LAST CENT FROM MINT:
SAN FRANCISCO – After 100 years of operation, the San Francisco Mint turns out its last cent. Once capable of turning out a million and half pennies a day, its machines fall silent and a long tradition ends.

SPORTS
NAVY JUNIOR BOXING:
ANNAPOLIS, MD. – Navy youngsters from 5 to 12 in the annual Junior Boxing finals. Big gloves and little fellas, and plenty of action from the flyweight fleet. Fists fly in all directions in a fun for all free for all.

SLALOM CHAMPIONSHIP:
SEATTLE, WASH. – Ski-birds on the wing, on a spectacular course, that drops 1500 feet in little more than a mile. Artistry in motion, and speed to spare in the National Giant Slalom Championships.

END OF AN ERA
CHURCHILL RESIGNS, EDEN TAKES OVER:
A glorious era of history ends with the resignation of Sir Winston Churchill as Britain’s Prime Minister. The Queen pays rare tribute to a commoner, as all England is moved by a sense of history. Succeeding Churchill in the post is veteran diplomat Anthony Eden, for 13 years, Churchill’s heir-apparent.

PHILIPPINE EARTHQUAKE:
Havoc on the island of Mindanao, in the wake of a series of earthquakes on land and under the sea. Tidal waves and temblors take a terrible toll: 416 dead, 792 injured, and another 150 missing in 24 hours of horror.

INDO CHINA REFUGEES:
Reds free 1700 Catholic Vietnamese, shown arriving in Saigon. An estimated 15,000 more await evacuation eagerly, despite internal dissension raging in the free portion of Vietnam.

FRENCH TRAIN SETS SPEED RECORD:
Literally burning up the tracks, an electric locomotive topples all train speed records, pulling three cars at over 200 miles an hour. A spectacular demonstration of power, but somehow, the train is 12 minutes late!

MARCIANO STARTS TRAINING:
In Calistoga, Cal., heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano trains for his coming bout with Britain’s Don Cockell. Close-up of the nose which may be the champ’s Achilles Heel. Badly cut in his last fight, he says it’s completely healed, and looks to his powerful right hand to take care of any trouble.

ANIMAL CORNER:
MOTEL FOR SEA LIONS, in Monterey, Cal. All the fish they can eat, and free sleeping room in the bay, thanks to “landlord” Joe Rappa. With all the free-loading going on, clouds of seagulls profit too, from the left-overs.

CAT MOTHERS FOX CUBS, in Illinois. A white Persian tabby named Persian has adopted three fox pups, along with her own two kittens. Found in the woods, the frisky pups get on fine with the kittens, a happy, scrappy family.

ANIMAL CIRCUS in Berlin, featuring amazing teamwork between cats, rats, chimps, foxes, and dogs. A terrific show staged by four-footed troopers of the tanbark.

EASTER – A JOYOUS SEASON FOR CHRISTENDOM:
Glorious weather helps make the holiday well-nigh perfect, as Easter is observed around the world.
SUNRISE SERVICES at the vast Hollywood Bowl, traditionally of impressive beauty and solemnity, are attended by an enormous throng, filling the huge arena.
THE PAPEL BLESSING is bestowed upon hundreds of thousands crowded into St. Peter’s Square. His Holiness warns of the dire need to turn atomic energy to purposes of peace.
WORLD’S BIGGEST EASTER EGG, made of chocolate, and specially flown to New York from Holland, delights tots. Easter bunnies and baby chicks for little playmates add to the fun.
EGG-ROLLING AT THE WHITE HOUSE, with President Eisenhower playing the jovial host, in a jolly observance of a grand American Easter tradition. Thousands of youngsters join in the sport.
NEW YORK’S EASTER PARADE is the biggest ever, with 2 million men, women and children promenading down 5th Avenue past St. Patrick’s, resplendent in spring finery.

FLYING MAN-HOLE COVER:
PALO ALTO, CAL. – The Navy’s newest experimental aircraft, as weird a gadget as any mad inventor ever conceived. No wings, no propeller. Just a thick disc of metal, with fan blades inside. No controls – but it works!

SPORTS

IKE OPENS BASEBALL SEASON:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Spring training is over, and the national sport gets under way. Throwing out the first ball in accordance with hallowed tradition, the President shows a good arm, despite a touch of bursitis. Play ball, America!

CONGRESSIONAL BASEBALL:
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Congressmen turn to the diamond, in a display that may set baseball back a hundred years or so. Seems that politicking is no substitute for spring training. Plenty of fun, lots of hits, lots of runs, lots and lots of errors and the Democrats tie the GOP, 8-8. Game called for exhaustion after the 5th.

AAU DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Grace and poetry in motion at the AAU Women’s Diving Championships. Top girl high-board artists in a delightful display of championship diving form, an appealing fusion of skill and beauty, in action.

VACCINE CONQUERS POLIO:
“The vaccine works.” – Dramatic words that sum up the results of tests of Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine. The culmination of 8 years of research, the vaccine is a medical milestone which will link Dr. Salk’s name with those of Pasteur, Jenner, and Banting. Even as the official announcement is made at the University of Michigan, vaccine is rolling out of drug houses all over the country for almost immediate use on millions of children. In sight is final conquest of the dread crippling disease.

THE CITADEL HONORS IKE:
CHARLESTON, S.C. – President Eisenhower receives an honorary degree from an old friend and comrade in arms, Gen. Mark Clark, now president of South Carolina’s military college, The Citadel. An impressive review of the corps of cadets concludes the ceremony.

“ATHLETICS” IN KANSAS CITY:
The “Athletics” open the first season of major league baseball in Kansas City. Uproarious civic enthusiasm greets the team on arrival. Former President Harry S. Truman throws out the first ball, as Connie Mack, inseparably associated with the team’s name looks on, and Kansas City makes its first entry in the record books an auspicious one, beating Detroit, 6-2.

CHAMPION GYMNASTICS:
GERMANY – Top stars from 19 nations including Russia and the Iron Curtain countries vie for the European Gymnastic Championships. An impressive display of iron muscular control and precision.
