STRIKE VIOLENCE AT SPERRY PLANT:
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. – Strike violence erupts for the second successive day at the Sperry Gyroscope plant. Nearly 4,000 mob cars and non-strikers attempting to enter the plant, defying police efforts to keep order.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD SHOW:
NEW YORK CITY – Delicacies from all over the world regale the eyes and the palates of visitors to the International Food Show. Gourmets and just plain folks make the culinary “Cook’s Tour,” refreshed by liberal free samples of tidbits from ravioli to beer.

RUBBER AND STEEL TIRE SHOWN:
AKRON, O. – Steel wire is successfully bonded with durable rubber to make a heavy duty tire for trucks and busses that’s good for half a million miles of service and will never blow out, a milestone in highway safety.

PALOS VERDES, CAL. – Delicate under-water eye surgery restores vision to “Sightless Charlie,” a blind bat ray and the pet at Marineland of the Pacific. A unique “first” in the annals of medicine.

QUAKE WRECKS GREEK PORT:
VOLOS, GREECE – This busy seaport town, 100 miles north of Athens is completely demolished following a series of violent earthquakes which toppled its stone and plaster buildings. Hundreds were injured by falling debris and virtually the entire city’s population, 60,000 were made homeless.

AFRO-ASIAN PARLEY ENDS:
BANDUNG, INDONESA – After passing strong resolutions against colonialism, delegates from twenty-nine nations adjourn, after several severe attacks on communism.

SALK HONORED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Doctor Jonas Salk, developer of the successful anti-polio vaccine, is presented with a citation from President Eisenhower who thanks him on behalf of all Americans.

SAIGON BOMB PLOT:
SAIGON, INDO-CHINA – Strife town Saigon again is the scene of violence as a bomb is hurled into the headquarters of the general commanding government forces against insurrectionists. Several guards are wounded.

WARD MANAGEMENT WINS:
CHICAGO – Louis Wolfson, financier, loses his fight to gain control of the mail order house of Montgomery Ward. The current chairman, Sewell Avery retains six board seats against Wolfson’s three.

NASHUA WINS WOOD MEMORIAL:
JAMICA, N.Y. – Nashua, the standout three-year old of the year, romps home by a neck against his arch rival Summer Tan, in the Wood Memorial and cops a $75,000 purse for his owner.

RESCUE FROM DEATH 340 FEET OVER RIVER:
NEW YORK CITY – High drama over the East River, as a would-be suicide defies police efforts at rescue, from a perch 340 feet above the surface. A spectacular duel with death as he jumps from girder to girder until he’s caught and subdued.

MARINES IN NATO MANEUVERS:
TURKEY – Mock war with the emphasis on realism. The U.S. Marines join with the 1st Turkish Army in Operation Red Trident, testing the defenses of the vital Dardanelles, in full scale maneuvers.

MOROCCO DAM OPENED:
MOROCCO – Berber tribesmen on horseback salute the opening of a giant new dam that will make possible giant strides of power and irrigation for the region, bringing bloom to the African desert.

WHITE WATER BOATING:
OREGON – More than 100 assorted craft shoot the rapids of the McKenzie River. From life-rafts to kayaks, the odd assortment are manned with light hearted enthusiasm by slightly drenched water sportsmen.

BASSETT T.K.O.’s FRENCH CHAMP:
PARIS – American Percy Bassett takes on French Featherweight Champ Serafin Ferrer. Bassett is knocked down several times, but storms back with a savage counter-attack, that has Ferrer’s seconds throwing in the sponge. A ring thriller.

TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS:
HOLLAND – Flashing action in the World Table Tennis Championships. Brilliant competition in the lightning fast sport, as Japan, Yugoslavia, Rumania, England, and Hungary vie for the coveted honors.

CABLE CAR FESTIVAL:
SAN FRANCISCO – The Bay City honors one of its most famed institutions, the hill-climbing cable cars. Pretty Jeannine Burris is crowned Queen, and then the parade begins – 10 colorfully bedecked cable cars – highlight of a festival that draws thousands to the heart of the city.

REDS RETURN AUSTRIAN CAPTIVES:
AUSTRIA – 300 Austrians held captive by Russia are returned to freedom, on the eve of 4-Power Ambassadors’ talks preliminary to a full-dress meeting on an Austrian peace treaty, that will mean the end of occupation by foreign troops for the first time in 18 years. A day of bright hope for Austria, and a propaganda advance for the Communist cause.

NEW ITALIAN PRESIDENT:
ROME – A setback for the West as the Chamber of Deputies elects Italy’s second President of the Republic, Giovanni Gronchi. Strongly opposed by pro-Western Premier Scelba, he was supported by Reds and leftists.

POLAR EXPEDITION LEAVES:
TETERBORO, N.J. – The first U.S. polar expedition since 1909 prepares for the flight north. A full plane-load of scientific measuring gear, plus sled dogs, and all the paraphernalia of Arctic survival is readied.

IKE LAYS LABOR CORNERSTONE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower lays the cornerstone of the new 3 1/2/ million dollar American Federation of Labor Headquarters building, as President George Meany of the merged AFL and CIO looks on.

FLYERS’ LIFE ASSURANCE:
SAN DIEGO, CAL. – Life assurance for Navy airmen, a school for survival, with rugged lessons in ditching procedure, using the “Dilbert Dunker,” and other training devices. A hard school that saves lives.

LOYALTY DAY PARADE:
NEW YORK CITY – 20,000 march in the 8th annual Loyalty Day Parade, led by General Mark Clark, Governor Harriman, and Mayor Wagner. An impressive demonstration of loyalty and faith in the ideals of America.

WINCHESTER, VA. – Senator Symington crowns pretty Jean Spratley Stevens queen of the 28th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. The event is highlighted by a pageant and a big parade, grander and more colorful than ever.

CYCLE RIDERS’ RODEO:
LEWISTON, IDA. – The Lewis-Clark Motorcycle Club’s 15th annual hill climb, a fearsome test of men and machines on a precipitous slope that just goes up, and up, and up… while the helpless handlebar jockeys mostly wind up going down. Gasoline fed broncos on a spectacular rampage in a cyclists’ rodeo.

REBELS DEFEATED IN SAIGON RIOTS:
VIETNAM – A reign of terror is launched in Saigon, capital of southern Vietnam, as rebel factions attempt to unseat the U.S. backed regime of Premier Ngo Dinh Diem. In savage street fighting that takes a heavy toll of civilians, Nationalist para-troops defeat the bid for power of a private army of ex-river pirates.

PROGRESS AT AUSTRIA FREEDOM PARLEY:
VIENNA – An amiable Russian delegation at the meeting of Big Four foreign ministers rapid progress at the parley which paves the way for a final peace treaty for Austria, blocked for 10 years by Russia.

SIAMESE TWINS:
CHICAGO – Siamese twins from Thailand – home of the first Siamese twins known to man, pose happily with their nurse, fully recovered from the operation that separated them.

BUSY DAYS FOR IKE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A crowded calendar of activities at the White House. In a whirlwind series of events, President Eisenhower confers America’s highest award for non-citizens on Thailand’s Premier Phibun Songgram, meets with the Governors of 45 states, signs the worlds’ first international atoms for peace treaty with Turkey, greets America’s Mother of the Year, and opens National Hearing Week.

POPE BLESSES LABOR:
ROME – 300,000 members of Italy’s Christian Workers Association throng St. Peter’s Square to receive blessings from the Pope. The Pontiff decrees a new liturgical feast, naming St. Joseph the Artisan the patron of workers.

WHAT IS IT?
ONLY SALVADOR DALI KNOWS!
FRANCE – Surrealist painter Salvador Dali sits down to paint a picture of a rhinoceros at the Vincennes Zoo. The finished product baffles guards and kibitzers, pleases Mr. Dali – but leaves the rhinoceros unmoved.

ROYAL VISIT HOLLAND:
HOLLAND – A guard of honor and a warm welcome from the burghers of Amsterdam greets the King and Queen of Sweden, paying a state visit to Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard.

DOOMTOWN:
The climax of the current series of atomic tests at Yucca Flats, Nevada – a typical American town, reconstructed in capsule form, experiences the blast of an atomic bomb nearly twice as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb. Automatic cameras record the impact of the shock waves and fire storm on typical houses less than a mile from the blast center – houses filled with typical furnishings, and untypical blast shelters. Dummies took the place of human beings. A primer lesson in the subject of civil defense in the age of the atom.

SWAPS BEATS NASHUA IN KENTUCKY DERBY:
KENTUCKY – California born and bred Swaps beats the East’s favorite 3 year old in the annual turf classic as Churchill Downs. The first Derby victory for America’s ‘winningest’ jockey, Willie Shoemaker, and a worthy addition to a proud tradition of racing thrillers.

COLISEUM DISASTER:
NEW YORK CITY – Disaster strikes at the city’s biggest construction project, the 30 million dollar Coliseum. With a thousand workmen on the job, a huge section of the second floor crashes through to the first – then minutes later, on to the basement. 42 were injured, at least 1 still missing hours later. Tragedy in the heart of Manhattan.

GERMANY IN NATO
REBUILT NATION TO PROVIDE HALF-MILLION MAN ARMY:
PARIS – The culmination of six years of delicate diplomatic maneuvering, as Chancellor Adenauer of West Germany joins U.S. Secretary of State Dulles, Britain’s Foreign Secretary Harold MacMilan, and France’s Foreign Minister Antoine Pinay at the NATO Council table. Taking its place as a full member of the 18 nation Western Defense organization, Germany will provide an army of half a million men.

BERLIN – West Berlin typifies the industry and endeavor that rebuilt a war-shattered nation. Vast construction projects rise over streets cleared of rubble – the emergence of a new city. An old, distasteful landmark departs from the American Zone. The Red Army War Memorial, long screened off against vandalism, is removed by Russia, at U.S. request.

PRESIDENT AGREES TO BIG FOUR CONFERENCE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Highlighting a White House Press Conference, President Eisenhower explains the factors underlying the U.S. decision to consent to an exploratory conference of the Big Four nations “at the summit”, to attack the source of world tension.

HIGH FASHION IN COSTUME JEWELRY:
NEW YORK – Tulip time, and a high fashion show in a country club garden. Emphasis is on gold-filled costume jewelry, glitter and glamour against a foil of flowers, in a setting of spring-time.

GIRL CHUTIST SETS FREE FALL RECORD:
FRANCE – Plummeting sixteen thousand feet in free fall before opening her parachute, Mademoiselle Colette Duval sets a new record. An exciting spectacle – onlookers gasp as her falling figure nears the ground – but the lovely daredevil alights safely and smiling.

AUSTRIA IS FREE:
VIENNA – Cheering throngs greet the news that foreign ministers of the Big Four nations have signed the treaty which ends 17 years of occupation by Nazi and Allied powers. Secretary Dulles and Foreign Ministers Molotov, MacMillan and Pinav affx their signatures to the historic document.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS:
SAN FRANCISCO – The 5th session of the model UN is held by 1200 young people representing 100 colleges, on the site of the founding of the original UN. Sixty-one nations are represented by the students.

MODEL OF “AIR” ACADEMY:
COLORADO SPRINGS – Architects display model of Air Force Academy to be built in Rocky Mt. foothills. Camera takes you on tour of school which will train future leaders of the Air Force, to be completed in 1957.

SUPER-TIRE VEHICLE:
CLINTONVILLE, WISC. – A land-cruiser with over-sized balloon tires is unveiled for Armed Forces representatives. The huge vehicle rolls along and over obstacles so smoothly you never know they’re there.

CHURCH-STATE FEUD:
BUENOS AIRES – Hundreds of thousands of workers, backers of Juan Peron, demonstrate as he addresses them in the course of a bitter state campaign against the church, during which several priests have been jailed.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

SPRING AT THE ZOO:
ST. LOUIS – Animal stars of the Spring Show delight throngs of youngsters, with chimps dressed up as famous Wild West characters, and elephants waltzing into the act.

WATER SKI TOURNAMENT:
CYPRESS GARDENS, FLA. – Trick stuff and record-breaking jumps feature the Dixie Tourney, with two Mexican stalwarts walking off with top honors for the men.

INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN GLOVES:
WEMBLEY, ENGLAND – British boxers win five bouts, to four for visiting Americans, in slam-bang fisticuffs before thrilled crowds.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Pres. Eisenhower points out in a vein of cautious optimism to Washington newsmen that he approaches the forthcoming Big Four conference with a hope born of the new won strength of the western allies.

WORLD NEWS IN BRIEF:
NEW AMBASSADOR – William B. Racy arrives in Korea with his family to take up his new post and receives a warm welcome from Pres. Rhee.
JET CAR – On famed Indianapolis Speedway, veteran driver pilot jet-powered test car, with jet thrust turning the wheels. Car can reach 140 MPH in five see.
MOVIE AWARD – June Allyson named top actress of year in Woman’s Home Companion poll, receives award at Beverly Hills, Calif.
ROYAL FAMILY – Cute scenes of Princess Anne needing (and getting) help from father when blanket gives her trouble watching horse show.

WELL-BALANCED G.I.:
BERLIN – Corporal Fox of L.A., stationed in West Berlin, proves a show-stopper when he balances odd assortment of things, including bicycle on chin, and chairs on stick on nose in a swimming pool. It’s a topsy-turvy world when he goes in for photography.
