NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1955 (UE55101)

U.S. JETS TO HOLLAND:
The first of 200 first-line Thunderstreak jet fighters are delivered to replace obsolete jets now serving with the Netherlands Air Force. Dutch airmen look on admiringly as the new craft demonstrate their capabilities – a spectacular show at near-sonic speeds.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
SENATOR KEFAUVER tosses his coon-skin cap in the Presidential ring, announcing that he will campaign for the Democratic candidacy in 1956 at a Washington, D.C. press conference.

700 P.O.W.’S FREED, and return to Germany after years in Red slavery. Tearful, joyful reunions mark their return. They are the first freed since Adenauer’s Moscow visit, when Russia promised to free 10,000.

PRINCE OF MONACO arrives in New York, and visits a Veteran’s Hospital. It’s rumored the handsome Prince. Europe’s most eligible bachelor is visiting America to seek a wife.

ROYAL DEDICATION for London Airport’s modern new Central Terminal building. Dedicated by Queen Elizabeth, it’s the first element in a large-scale modernization program.

AMPHIBIOUS MOTORCYCLE newly invented is tested in Spain. The cycle takes a turn in canal, startling ducks and astounding boatmen. It works fine, surprising all but the inventor.

BONNETS FROM SUNNY ITALY:
Feathers and fur highlight the newest hat fashions, modeled by lovely Signorinas. Chic and elegant chapeaux for every occasion.

SKI-BIRDS TAKE OFF:
BEAR MOUNTAIN, N.Y. – Canadian Olympic hopeful Jacques Charland “sweeps the hill” in winning the annual Tokte Memorial jump.

LENSING, MICH. – Governor G. Mennen Williams wishes the Michigan State team good luck and godspeed as they leave for the West Coast and the Rose Bowl game. Cheerleaders and a throng of student fans make it a gala send-off.

17 DIE AS AIRLINER STRIKES TREE:
FLORIDA – Death strikes with shocking suddenness to mar the holiday season when a Northward bound airliner hits a tree while making a landing at Jacksonville, and crashes. All aboard perished.

ONE MAN ORPHANAGE:
KOREA – A U.S. Army Private, Fritz Moller, operates an orphanage for 30 Korean war waifs, most of them blind. Moller organized the charity himself, spending hundreds of dollars of his own money, and facing court martial for his cutting of military red tape, but won approval. The story continues as Moller now faces new and greater problems.

TOOTHPICK CARNIVAL:
SAN FRANCISCO – An entire carnival in miniature, made out of two million toothpicks. Made by inmates of a federal prison, it features all the favorite rides, in actual working models.

SWISS MISS STYLES:
NEW YORK CITY – Luxurious fashions just in from Zurich highlight the Swiss Xmas Festival. Swiss designers show a complete line from sportswear to stunning evening styles, keeping abreast of the international style race.

FROZEN FISHING BOATS:
BOSTON – Symbolic of a record cold wave across wide areas of the U.S., fishing boats attest to the savagery of winter’s onslaught as they return sheathed in glittering ice, stem to stern.

SENTINELS OF DEFENSE:
ARCTIC AIR FRONTIER – Air Force Scorpion jet fighters sweep across the Northlands frozen wastes, guarding the skies against possible sneak attack. Radar screens and air centers maintain 24 hour alect, to send the 600 mph jets into action with their lethal rockets, if the grim need should arise.

TYPEWRITER’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY:
ITALY – An annual exhibition of typewriters, from the earliest to the most recent goes on display to mark the 100th anniversary of the invention of the machine.

FLOODS RAVAGE WEST COAST:
The worst disaster since the San Francisco earthquake hits California and the Pacific Northwest as storms roar in on a 1,000 mile front and bring record floods in their wake. A wall of water inundates California towns. Over 50,000 are homeless, and property damage mounts into the hundreds of millions in the wake of the disaster, which took a death toll of 47.

BELLEAU WOODS MEMORIAL:
FRANCE – A memorial to the U.S. Marines is dedicated on the scene of the World War I battle in which they helped stop the German advance on Paris.

FROGMEN BLAST TARGET:
CALIFORNIA – Frogmen in action during hazardous training, dropping from high speed boats to swim stealthily ashore on a mission of destruction.

MOUTH PAINTING:
ITALY – 14 year old Bruno Carati demonstrates how he overcame total paralysis to realize artistic talent through faith and determination.

SPORTS

AIR FORCE BOBSLEDDERS:
GERMANY – The U.S. Air Force Bobsled team goes into intensive training, burning up their Alpine track, in a bid for a berth on the Olympic squad. Flashing speed, split-second co-ordination, and iron nerves make for a top sports thrill.

BROWNS 38, RAMS 14:
LOS ANGELES – The Cleveland Browns vs the Los Angeles Rams, for the pro football crown. The Browns’ great Otto Graham, in his farewell appearance, sparks the Browns powerhouse game, as aided by 7 interceptions they crush the Rams 38-14.
