Battle Of Russia: Reel-1

History of Russia. In 1242 the German Order of Teutonic Knights invaded Russia and occupied the old city of Pskov and threatened to enslave the entire population including the capitol Novgorod. The Russian people turned to Prince Alexander Nevsky for leadership. On April 5, 1242 in the Battle of Lake Peipus the Russians met and defeated the might of the German forces. In 1704 Charles the Twelfth of Sweden marched into Russia. Lead by their Emperor, Peter The Great and after five years of war, the Swedes were defeated in the historic Battle of Poltava. 1812 Napoleon and his army blazed their way across Europe and marched toward Moscow. Again in 1914 a German army under Kaiser Wilhelm set out to conquer Russia. Footage of battles using medieval weapons and knights in armour.

Map shows countries Germany occupied or invaded in the late 1930's. By March 1941 Germany occupied Hungary, Rumania, and Bulgaria. Map shows Italian invasion of Greece that failed. German dive bombers attack Yugoslavia, invades Yugoslavia and Greece. German conquest of the Balkans was complete. Shows Russian industry producing weapons of war. Russians inducted and trained as soldiers. On June 22, 1941 Hitler launched an all out assault on Russia using 200 Axis divisions (200 million men) driving toward Leningrad in the North, Moscow in the center and Ukraine in the South.

Map shows the Russian cities overrun by the German blitzkrieg. Russian government moved to Kuibyshev as the Germany Army advanced on Moscow. By December the Germans had captured 500,000 square miles of Russia. Despite the destruction of Russian military weapons and capture of thousands of Russian soldiers, the Germany Blitz failed to work against the Russians as explained with use of maps. As one defense line was penetrated the total line fell back and consolidated with the next line. The results were the deeper the Germans advanced into Russia the more resistance they encountered. Street fighting in Russian cities. Odessa was the scene of a heroic siege of two months. Sevastopol an eight-month defense inch-by-inch, street-by-street, house-by-house and then room-by-room fighting. This heroic resistance and total devastation of cities forced the Germans to leave the safety of their tanks and battle in the rubble. German soldiers firing rifles and machine guns. Bodies of dead Germans. Shows grim faces of Russian people fighting the Germans. Shows total mobilization of Russia and Russian people to fight the Germans.

December 1941. The German Army had been stopped at the gates of Moscow and the Russian Army, with the help of "old man winter", was given orders for a massive offense against the Germans. The Russian Army attacked on all fronts with fighter planes, bombers, artillery, tanks, calvary, and infantry. The Russian Army swept through villages and towns, Volokolamsk, Yepifan, Tarussa, Yasnaya-Polyana, Venev, Rogachev, Klin, Mozhaisk, Borodino, Kaluga, as the German Army retreated. The Russian people came out of hiding to find towns and villages destroyed by the retreating German Army.

By Spring 1942 the Russian counterattack had pushed the Germans back on all fronts and For the first time the legend of German invincibility was shattered. Scenes of the city of Leningrad, former name Petrograd prior to WWII. The people of Leningrad dig trenches, build barricades, and prepare fortifications against the German attack. Russian anti-aircraft guns firing, German planes dropping bombs. Shows bomb damaged buildings, fires, and bodies of Russians killed. Map showing city of Leningrad surrounded by the Germans and the German Commander sent the city an ultimatum demanding surrender. He is still waiting for an answer. The siege of Leningrad or the Leningrad blockade. Shows living conditions in Leningrad during the bitter winter of 1941 with no fuel and very little food. With their offensive to capture the city stopped the Germans resorted to artillery bombardment beginning in August 1941. Shows German artillery firing and explosions in Leningrad. Map shows Russian plan to move food and supplies to Leningrad across frozen Lake Lodoga. Shows equipment carving a road across the frozen lake and truck loads of supplies moving across the frozen lake. Trucks under attack by German planes. The Russians laid a rail line across the ice to deliver train loads of supplies to the besieged city of Leningrad. With these supplies and coming of spring Leningrad comes to life.
