In France and Algeria, millions go to the polls, to vote on De Gaulle's proposals to solve the North African Algerian crisis. Despite opposition by the French right-wing and Moslem nationalists, the votes in favor of De Gaulle's plan add to a clear majority, less than the resounding vote of confidence he sought, but sufficient to be a clear mandate in his favor.

61 Perish As Tankers Collide In The Bosporus Straits
Maritime disaster in the Bosphorus Strait, just off Istanbul, as two tankers collide. Fire and explosion send flaming oil spreading over the busy sea lanes, engulfing a Turkish passenger vessel anchored nearby. At least 61 die as all three ships are destroyed.
Upset Victory In Barrel Jumping Competition
At Grossinger, New York, long time barrel jumping champion Leo Lebel fails in his bid for his 7th consecutive championship. Jim Waldo of Portland, Oregon, makes a spectacular 16 barrel leap to win the 1961 championship.

Some of the finest jumping in many seasons at Bear Mountain marks the 1961 Torger Tokle Memorial Ski Jump, as sub-zero temperatures coat the slope with slick ice. Art Tokle takes the trophy for the fifth consecutive year.
