$2,000,000 FERRY BLAZE
NEW YORK – A spectacular nine-alarm fire that lasts more than 24 hours levels the ferry slip at Saint George, Staten Island. Three people died in the blaze and 35,000 commuters to Manhattan sought other means of getting to work.

MONSTER FLYING WING
INGLEWOOD, CAL. – A new chapter in aviation development is written, as the twenty-five-ton Northrop flying wing takes to the air. The tailless craft has a wing span of 172 feet and will weigh fifty tons fully loaded.

PEOPLE IN THE NEWS
John W. Snyder takes office as secretary of the treasury. He is sworn in by Fred M. Vinson, chief justice of the Supreme court. Benjamin Fairless, president of United States Steel, is awarded the Medal of Merit by Secretary of War Patterson, for his work as advisor to the Ordnance Department during the war. John R. Steelman, the president’s labor advisor, is sworn in as Director of War Mobilization and Reconversion.

MERRY-GO-ROUND MATRIMONY
PALISADES PARK, N.J. – He met her on that carousel before he went off to kill a few Japs. So he came back, snatched the wedding ring where the brass ring used to be, and married her on the merry-go-round with the whole wedding party getting a ride.

JAPAN’S CROWN PRINCE
TOKYO – Breaking the tradition of centuries, thirteen-year old Prince Akihito enters a boys school, to mix on even terms with commoners. Another step on democracy road for Japan.

EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE EPOCHAL BLAST
Last minute preparations for the atom bomb test at Bikini Atoll! See the planes, the ships and the men who took part in Operation Crossroads! The famed B-29, “Dave’s Dream,” takes off from Kwajalein as the entire world waits to hear that three ships were sunk and many others damaged as the fourth atom bomb in history was exploded. The results have as yet not been completely evaluated.

LONDON, ENGLAND – Margaret Lockwood and James Mason, two of Britain’s most popular picture stars, receive the National Film Award. Producer J. Arthur Rank, and other notables, attend the presentation ceremonies.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Fighting men of the 442nd Combat Team, Jap-Americans who won more medals and citations than any other corresponding outfit, return to the U.S. and receive a colorful welcome.

POINT CLAIRE, QUEBEC – George Fazio of Los Angeles cards a 70 in the play-ff against Dick Metz to win the Canadian Open tourney at Beaconsfield. Fazio uncorks some amazing putts to cop coveted trophy.

CLEVELAND, OHIO – The first big regatta of the sailing season brings out the skippers in force, and there’s beauty and symmetry as they send their cruisers and sloops over the picturesque course.

“OPERATION CROSSROADS”
The dramatic film history of the atom bomb test at Bikini! Pictures of the actual bomb drop! Blasted ships and the terrible destructive force of the world’s fourth atom bomb!

Universal Newsreel, in cooperation with the Army and Navy, presents the motion picture drama – “Operation Crossroads.” This film record of the historical event shows in dramatic detail the various phases of the epochal experiment – from takeoff to the awful blast that destroyed or damaged more than half the ships in Bikini Lagoon.

When the Superfortress, “Dave’s Dream,” drops its destructive missile on the 73-ship flotilla, it culminated many weeks of preparations and scientific research. From photographic planes, from ships and from towers on Bikini, motion picture cameras ground out the gripping story of the bomb explosion and subsequent damage scenes. When you see the appalling damage wrought, you will understand the force of the bomb. Complete results have as yet not been assessed, but from the facts as they now stand, Operation Crossroads, proves to be the film highlight of all time!

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. – Critically injured when the experimental plane he was piloting developed motor trouble and crashed, setting three homes on fire, Howard Hughes, wealthy sportsman, miraculously escapes alive.

SUWANEE PLAYGROUND
OKEFENOKEE SWAMP, GA. – Earth-shaking dynamite blasts break the silence of the hitherto impenetrable swamp, as the area is readied for its opening as a public park. The Suwanee River headwaters become a playground.

STAMFORD, TEXAS – 75,000 fans jam the 4,000-population town to attend the 16th annual Cowboy Reunion, and get their thrills-worth of bronco-busting and steer-riding. The spills come fast – and hard!

HAVANA – Jimmy McLane, young Yale swimmer, chalks up a new record in the 800-meter event during the Yale-Cuban All-Star meet in the Sports Palace Pool.

FRANCE – Near Bordeaux, farmers join forces to combat a serious blight of crickets. The swarms of insects threaten crops until teams of men equipped with DDT-tanks smoke out the hungry pests.

PARIS, FRANCE – The first post-war beauty contest brings out the eye-filling cuties in rare form, and a highlight of the pulchritude parade is a “bath-dress competition” – regardez vous!

ONSET, MASS. – Scenes reminiscent of bomb-ravaged cities come into being in peaceful Buzzards Bay resort town, following a gas explosion which killed nine persons, injured scores and wrecked four buildings.

WALLA WALLA, WASH. – In the heart of the great wheat-producing region of the Northwest, the annual harvest is on. On the famed Miller ranch, a 20-horse-team “combine” is bringing in a bumper crop.

ENGLAND – Torrential rains greet the King and Queen during their visit to Chester, and later in Wales, but fails to dampen the enthusiasm fo the huge crowd which turns out to hail the royal couple.

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – A war-born development finds a peace time use on the beach, as lovely models demonstrate the new welded seam plastic water toys. Another novelty is a plastic-covered kayak.

SEATTLE, WASH. – It’s the world’s smallest flying machine. It weights only 125 pounds, and has rotor span of 15 feet. Its inventor says the operation is so simple that anyone can learn to fly it.
