WORLD SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
ST. LOUIS and BOSTON – Highlights of the second, third and fourth games. The pitching of Harry Brecheen gives the Cards the edge and they win the second game, 3-0. The Red Sox come back and take the third in Boston, and Ted Williams nullifies Cardinals’ defense strategy. Fourth game is a Card slug-fest and they win, 12-3, and tie up the Series.

BYRNES DENIES ATOM THREAT
PARIS – Speaking at the American Club, the U.S. Secretary of State denies that the United States is seeking to use the atom bomb as a threat against Russia. He sees hope for peace if all nations pursue peaceful policies.

“IKE” IN SCOTLAND
SCOTLAND – General Eisenhower receives a warm welcome during his Scottish tour. At Balmoral Castle, he meets the royal family, while in Edinburgh he receives an honorary degree at University ceremonies.

MEXICO HONORS WARNER
BURBANK, CALIF. – A high honor – the Order of the Aztec Eagle – is presented to Jack L. Warner, motion picture producer, for his accomplishments in promoting better understanding of our good neighbor.

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Big thrills in baseball! The final and decisive game in the 1946 World Series. The doughty Cardinals, behind the relief pitching of Harry Brecheen, win the deciding game 4-3 and take the series from the Boston Red Sox by four games to three.

VOLCANO MENACES ISLAND
STROMBOLI, ITALY – After two years of inactivity, the Stromboli volcano erupts and showers the island village with hot ashes. Citizens are in panic, crops are ruined, and worse may yet follow.

“SLINGSHOT” FOR PLANES
PAWTUXENT, MD. – The “Electropult,” a novel electric slingshot for getting big planes into the air quickly, is tested at the Navy Air Station here. A twin-engined bomber is used in these amazing experiments.

HUNTINGTON, L.I. – A 60-foot whale makes the news in a big way. Stranded when the tide went down, the huge sea mammal resists efforts of the Coast Guard to tow it out to deep water. Thousands flock to see the huge beast’s dying gasps.

ARMY CRUSHES COLUMBIA
WEST POINT – The expected clash of undefeated giants turns into a one-sided slaughter as the Cadets ride rough-shod over the Columbia Lions and win their 23rd straight victory, 48-14.

KNOXVILLE – Favored Alabama is derailed by a hard-hitting “Vols” team. Four times the Crimson Tide is turned back at the goal line, and Tennessee wins, 12-0.

NEW YORK – Polo Grounds fans are in for thrills when the Galloping Gaels of California clash with the Rams. It’s a passing attack, sparked by Wedemeyer of St. Mary’s , which brings a lop-sided 33-2 score.

TRUMAN URGES U.S. – STOP HARPING ON WAR
NEW YORK – Addressing delegates from 51 nations to the General Assembly of the United Nations at its new headquarters at the World’s Fair site, the President sternly warns that rumors of war must be checked lest they impede world recovery. He says that fears of war are “unwarranted and unjustified.”

STEAKS ON PARADE
KANSAS CITY – The home of the “K.C. steak” is host to the Royal Livestock Show – the greatest mouth-wateringest collection of steak and chops on the hoof seen since meat de-control. A very “rare” sight.

LOS ANGELES – The “Kitchenette Girls” – six young lassies who sure can cook on that front burner when it comes to gymnastic tricks – demonstrate their amazing agility and ability on the trampolin.

NEW YORK – Endorsing the Russian proposal for a world-wide reduction in armaments as offered to the General Assembly by Molotov, the U.S. delegate, Warren Austin, tells the United Nations meeting that there must be safe-guards to prevent violations and evasion. The United States will not disarm unilaterally, he says.

NEW YORK – Tops for thrills in pro football in this clash between the N.Y. Giants and the Chicago Bears. Over 62,000 fans see the under-dogs stop the Bear attack and score a decisive upset.
