CARUTHERSVILLE, MO. – The worst Mississippi River tragedy in years takes the lives of eleven persons, following the collision of a ferry boat and a barge at night. The grim search for bodies is a tragic aftermath.

LONG BEACH, CALIF. – Work nears completion on Howard Hughes’ $20,000,000 flying boat – largest in the world. The 320-foot wing is attached to the huge hull, and the high fin towers above the harbor.

UNDERWATER ATOM BLAST
“BAKER DAY” AT OPERATION CROSSROADS!
BIKINI LAGOON – First pictures of the underwater atom blast! Even more spectacular than the first Bikini bomb test, these awe-inspiring films show the spectacular geyser of water that shoots up into the sky for over a mile, enveloping the “guinea pig” fleet in billowing masses of water and steam. When salvage vessels enter the lagoon, a battleship and a carrier have been sunk, and several smaller ships are resting on the bottom. JAP FILM OF HIROSHIMA BLAST
JAPAN – These captured pictures show the immediate after-effect of the atom bomb that blasted Hiroshima and killed or wounded about 70,000 persons. Other pictures taken a year after the explosion are also seen in this U.S. Strategic Bombing survey report on the blast damage.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Scenes of terror and destruction follow in wake of earthquake that ravages many cities. Buildings and homes are in ruins; scores are dead and hundreds injured, and later tremor endangers rescue work.

BREMEN, GERMANY – Huge submarine pens on the Weser River are bombed during tests by Occupation forces on the thick-walled structures, seized at the armistice and hitherto well-guarded secrets. The bomb damage is extensive!

CLEVELAND, OHIO – Stirring highlight of the huge convention attended by thousands of members of Jehovah’s Witnesses comes when preachers baptize 3,000 converts in Lake Erie. A religious spectacle!

RIO DE JANEIRO – The U.S. Chief of Staff receives a warm welcome when he arrives by plane for his first visit to Brazil, President Dutra leads his nation in a stirring salute to the hero of victory in Europe.

MASHED SPUDS BY THE TON
MOSES LAKE, WASH. – Potatoes are mashed by the millions as spuds flood the market and there’s not enough shipping space to handle them. On the air base here the spuds are crushed and prepared for use in distilleries.

GRADUATE CHINA AIR CADETS
AUSTIN, TEXAS – 500 Chinese fliers, trained at Bergstrom Field by American instructors, receive their diplomas during colorful graduation ceremonies, attended by Chinese General Mow. Planes fly overhead during the review parade.

FRANCE – Youngsters in a Red Cross camp near Paris let off steam in a battle royale that’s a cinch for laughs. It all starts when two wrestlers take on a campful of the young demons – and the fun begins!

Mr. Truman, hale and hearty in his sixties, wears out photographers and newsmen as he strides briskly around the capital for a fast two miles during his morning constitutional.

ATLANTIC MIXUP
When the S.S. American Farmer was damaged in a collision off the English coast, a salvage argument arose. A British steamer took the Farmer in tow. Then an American crew took over. The Farmer arrives in Falmouth, England – a bone of contention.

CONEY ISLAND – Sixty beauties pass in review before a critical jury of talent experts. The winner, besides getting a cash prize, wins a screen test.

PARIS, ONTARIO – Seventy years ago the first long distance call was made in this Ontario town. Three surviving witnesses of the event gather for the unveiling of a plaque to Alexander Graham Bell, and a reenactment with original instruments.

SOAP BOX DERBY
AKRON, OHIO – Once again the young hopefuls of the nation gather to see who can get down that 1200 foot ramp in the shortest time, in their home made contraptions. Fourteen-year old Gilbert Klecan of San Diego wins himself a four year scholarship at college.

HONOR TO CHURCHILL
DOVER – In the city which was one of Britain’s bastions during the war, Winston Churchill, great war leader, is acclaimed as Lord Warden, and receives the cheers of grateful citizens.

SPEED BOAT SWEEPSTAKES
RED BANK, N.J. – The really fast water babies tangle in the National Motor boat sweepstakes. Orchestra Leader Guy Lombard wins the event in his Tempo VI with an average of 63 miles an hour.

HELICOPTER REFEREE
SALEM, N.H. – Seated in a helicopter, the track steward at Rockingham Park keeps an eagle eye on the nags, as he follows them foot-by-foot around the track, hovering a scant fifty feet above them. Not much chance for shenanigans here.

ORPHANS’ BIG DAY
LONG BEACH, N.Y. – For the sixteenth year, it’s the day of days for New York’s orphans who are again guests of a lover of kids – Dave Soden. Baseball heroes Babe Ruth and Dixie Walker, help do the honors.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Indian” bob Feller throws a baseball 145 feet per second – or 98.6 miles per hour – to set a record at Griffith Stadium. Army engineers time the mighty heave with a special recording device.

NAVY’S BIGGEST AIRPLANE
BURBANK, CALIFORNIA – The wraps are taken off the new Lockheed “Constitution” – 168-passenger plane built for the Navy and soon ready for test flights. The 92-ton dreadnaught will be able to fly to Tokyo in 19 hours.

PAINLESS DENTISTRY!
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Good news for you nervous victims of the dentist’s drill! This new device uses carbon dioxide to keep the drill cold – and it’s the heat (they say) that hurts so much. Open wider, please!

TROUT FISHING DERBY
LIVINGSTON, MONT. – Along the Yellowstone River in Paradise Valley, the anglers are out 1,500 strong to vie for prizes in the 1946 edition of the national fishing classic. A 3 ?-pounder wins the $1,000 check.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Teams of daring boy and girl roller-skating champs get underway in the dizzy round of spills and action and speed at the Polo Grounds. The crowd is tense as the speeding skaters take some nasty spills.

BERMUDA – Aboard the yacht “Williamsburg,” the President arrives on a much-needed vacation. With his close friends and aids, Mr. Truman goes swimming on the eve of his arrival at the quaint island paradise.

NOVEL ANIMAL CIRCUS
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The strangest circus act on record. Four lions, two polar bears, two black bears and two Harlequin Danes – all in one cage. A drunken act by one of the bears steals the show.

TRIESTE – When dock-workers strike against Peace Conference decision on Trieste, and food for Austria remains unloaded, Italian students volunteer to do the job.

CHICAGO, ILL. – The gridiron season gets underway at Soldier Field with the College All-Stars riding roughshod over the Los Angeles “Rams.” Elroy Hirsch of Wisconsin scores twice as the collegians win, 16-0.

TIGNES, FRANCE – Residents of this Alpine village protested proposed flooding of their town for hydro-electric station – without avail! So they take matters into their own hands and set fire to the machinery.

OF BERMUDA – And he didn’t catch a thing! The President braves rain and rough water off the island’s northern tip as he and members of his party go fishing in small cruisers. Mr. Truman throws a small one away.

ATLANTIC CITY,N.J. – Youngsters at this novel get-together at the Steep Pier have three times as much fun. They’re all triplets – most of them alike as peas in a pod. Their ages range from 7 months to 33 years.

1,000 STRANDED BY STORM
YORK BEACH, MAINE – Stranded on this resort island when torrential rains flooded their homes and made ferry trips impossible, one thousand vacationers are aided by Coast Guardsmen until floods subside.

MODERN JONAHS AT WORK
OFF CHILE – Whale hunt! These dramatic and interesting films show Chilean whalers in their sturdy boats, catching Blue Whales in the vast Pacific. Explosive harpoons are used to kill huge whales.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Re-affirming our right to send U.S. warships anywhere in the world, Admiral Halsey defends cruise of huge carrier to Greek waters and says “We will go where we please!”

NAPLES, ITALY – The 45,000 ton carrier rides at anchor, with planes and men ready for action on eve of departure to Greece.
