TRUMAN ASKS INCREASED TAXES IN MESSAGE TO NEW CONGRESS
WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman, in his “State of the Union” message, says that the continued well-being of the nation requires a new tax load of $4,000,000,000 and an eight-point control program for coping with inflation.

11 YALE MEN DIE IN CRASH
SEATTLE – The charred wreckage of a DC-3 airliner is tomb for eleven Yale men and three in crew. Thirteen others escaped when the craft plunged out of control during take-off and crashed into a hangar, bursting into flames.

SCORES DEAD IN TORNADO
WARREN, ARK. – Fifty-one are dead, hundreds injured, and almost all houses are leveled, following a tornado which roared up out of the southwest. Elsewhere in the West, nature takes a heavy toll from winter storms.

TOKYO RAIDER I PEACE ROLE
TOKYO – The Rev. Mr. Deshazer, who was a bombardier on the Doolittle raid over Japan, returns to Tokyo on a mission of peace. With his wife and family, he will do missionary work in a land he once bombed.

BROOKLYN – Slam-bang action and excitement feature the preliminary bouts of the Golden Gloves at Ridgewood Arena. Sub-novice class hopefuls put on bang-up bouts, with knock-outs bringing the clashes to abrupt and thrilling conclusions.

ERIN GO BRR! IN THE ICE
CANADA – Tommy Bruen from Ireland, hotel employee in the Laurentians, goes swimming I a hole in the ice at Lae Des Sables. Tommy’s not crazy, exactly, he likes it, but astounded bystanders think the hold is in Tommy’s head, not the ice.

MARSHALL RESIGNS STATE POST
PINEHURST – George C. Marshall, war-time Army chief and of late the U.S. Secretary of State, poses with Mrs. Marshall following his resignation. He is recuperating from a recent operation.

WASHINGTON – Dean Acheson, present Undersecretary of State, has been named by Pres. Truman to replace Mr. Marshall. James E. Webb moves up into Acheson’s present post.

RITES FOR EGYPT PREMIER
CAIRO – Last rites for Premier Nokrashy Pasha, killed by an assassin’s bullet. Soldiers, statesmen and thousands of others march in the mile-long funeral procession, and members of slain premier’s Saadist Party shout for vengeance.

18,000 MUMMERS IN PARADE
PHILADELPHIA – The weather held up King Momus, but when he struts he outdoes himself with the biggest and most lavish Mummers Parade of all times. Two million spectators view the glittering procession of funmakers.

TRAGEDY MARS AIR SHOW
MIAMI – Highlights of the Air Maneuvers. Stunts, formation flights, speed races – and flaming death. A Shooting Star crashes before the stunned spectators, during a dramatic show that sets new highs for thrills and chills.

MISS PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER
NEW YORK – Pretty Jeanne Crow, 21-year old lovely from Florida, wins the nod of the judges and is chosen Queen of the Press Photographers. Forty contestants vie for the title, but Miss Crow wins, for very good reasons.

REVELRY MARKS ARTS BALL
LONDON – A mermaid loses her tail, and other hijinks mark the annual Chelsea Arts Ball at Royal Albert Hall. 6,000 art students drink, dance and make merry, and at midnight, the rioting gets out of hand.

FOUR-YEAR OLD MINISTER
LONG BEACH – Marjoe Gortner, four-year old ordained minister, known as the miracle child evangelist, performs a wedding ceremony for a sailor and bride. The youngster has caused a furore in religious circles.

FLORIDA GOVERNOR INAUGURAL
TALLAHASSEE – Gov. Fuller Warren, poor boy who made good, is sworn in as Florida’s 30th governor. Following the inaugural, 35,000 attend a monster barbecue.

CALIFORNIA SHIVERS AS FLORIDA SIZZLES
Six inches of snow blankets Southern California and the citrus crop suffers fifty million dollars damage, while in Florida the mercury soars to the eighties and the usual crop of bathing cuties display the latest in swim wear.

FRANCE SAYS THANKS
In return for the Friendship Train, which took badly needed food to Europe, France in turn, sends a train loaded with her specialties to the United States. At Le Havre the train is loaded on shipboard.

DESTROYERS COME OUT OF MOTHBALLS
SAN DIEGO – With world tension mounting, the navy takes the wrappings off four hundred of the smaller craft. They are being readied for instant service – just in case.

KIDS STEAL SHOW
GERMANY – A study in facial expression as German youngsters see a Punch and Judy show during the holidays. It’s audience reaction that would make and actor’s mouth water.

MANGRUM COPS L.A. OPEN
LOS ANGELES – Lloyd Mangrum picks up the marbles with a sparkling 284 in the Los Angeles open golf tournament. To do it, he breaks a four way tie with a final round one-under-par 70.

IT’S ICE TIME
As the Silver Skates come to a brilliant close, Dick Button, world’s champion figure skater puts on a dazzling exhibition, and the Prestons, Paul and Mickee, lift the customers out of their seats with their ice acrobatics at Madison Square Garden.

TOP REDS GO ON TRIAL
NEW YORK – The Federal Bldg. assumes the look of a Broadway premiere as eleven Communist party leaders appear to stand trial on conspiracy charges. Hundreds of spectators jam the streets, and a force of 400 police stands guard.

THE MARCH OF DIMES
Americans, from Pres. Truman on down, get behind the March of Dimes. At the White House, Mr. Truman greets little Linda Brown, the poster girl. In New York, Acting Mayor Bennett joins film and radio stars in giving the polio drive a big send-off.

TRUMAN “JOINS” UNION
WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman is now a member of the American Federation of Musicians. Plaque and membership card are presented by James Petrillo and William Green, as mark of esteem for President’s “harmony” in promoting peace.

PIGEONS STRUT STUFF
MONTREAL – Pigeons on parade. Over 550 birds of 35 varieties, including fancy pouters, compete in colorful show. An English Carrier cops the silverware for proud owner, but an unwelcome cat steals the show.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TALKS
LONDON – Traffic signals that warn pedestrians to “look to the right,” prove worth during debut at busy intersection. You’ll find it hard to avoid hearing the novel warning – and you can’t answer back!

CHICHAHUAS ON PARADE
MIAMI – Dressed in their gladdest rags, the mighty mites of dogdom strut their stuff prior to annual Chihuahua Specialty show. No bigger than a minute, the tiny pooches provide king-sized chuckles with their antics.

SKI JUMPERS SOAP IN MEET
FOX RIVER GROVE, ILL. – Winter’s high in thrills – ski jumping! The fans are out to see the top notch jumpers take off in spectacular leaps (and spills) in the Norge Ski Club’s annual meet. Petter Hugsted of Norway wins top honors.

AVIATION IN THE NEWS
MUROC, CAL. – The Air Force’s X-1 rocket plane, first to exceed speed of sound, goes aloft under own steam. Stubby craft takes off and climbs to 23,000 feet in less than two minutes!

POINT MUGU, CAL. – Spectacular scenes of pilotless ram-jet aircraft being tested by Navy, Suspended beneath plane’s wing, Gorgon IV is controlled from ground as it sets new endurance marks.

VOLCANO IN ACTION
MEXICO – Spectacular pictures taken on the very crater edge of the famed volcano, Paracutin. The cameraman who risked his life to get these exciting films is forced to duck, to avoid flying rocks and poisonous gases.

ACHESON IS SWORN IN
WASHINGTON – Dean Acheson, former State Dept. official, takes over as Secretary of State, succeeding Gen. Marshall. He is sworn in at the White House by Chief Justice Vinson, with Pres. Truman looking on.

CHAMOIS HUNTING IN THE ALPS
AUSTRIA – Unusual films of hunting the elusive chamois high in the Tyrolean Alps. Winter is the only time a hunter can get near the agile goat, to capture a treasured prize after a long chase in the mountains.

FIGHTS END DIVE FOR CROSS
NEW YORK – A Greek church ceremony – diving into the river for a cross – comes to a bitter end, as contestants wrangle over an alleged foul by one diver. Spectators join the fun, and police are forced to restore order.

BULL IN A CHINA SHOP!
HAMILTON, ONTARIO – A Holstein bull is let loose in a china shop. The results, at first are disappointing, but the critter is bull-dozed into action and throws his weight around. He makes mockery of the crockery.

SONJA IN GALA ICE REVUE
NEW YORK – In a dazzling and spectacular ice-travaganza, Sonja Henie reigns as queen of the ice over a colorful court. The 1949 edition of Hollywood Ice Revue brings glitter, Glamor – and laughs galore – in a fresh frozen setting.

JACK FROST FLEET SAILS
FOX LAKE, ILL. – Wintry thrills and chills – ice boating. When the Jack Frost regatta gets underway, you’re in for real excitement, with speed and dangerous turns bringing disaster to some skippers.

OPERATION HAY-LIFT
The Air Force starts its “Operation Haylift” to save the starving livestock of the Western ranges, as new blizzards lash the distressed areas. Ranchers help load bales of hay aboard cargo planes, which drop the precious feed above the blizzard-bound herds of cattle and sheep.

ITALIAN ART ON DISPLAY
NEW YORK – Italian paintings and works of art, including the statute of San Ludovido by Donatello, lent by Italy to help restore historic monuments at home, are displayed at the Wildenstein Galleries. Ambassador Tarchiani attends opening.

ITALY SENDS SHIPS TO SOVIET
AUGUSTA, ITALY – The price of defeat – battleships and other fighting ships which go to Russia under terms of the peace treaty. Russian crews are aboard the ships as they prepare to sail for Soviet ports.

NEW JET BOMBER TESTED
MOSES LAKE, WASH. – The Boeing XB-47 Stratojet, world’s fastest bomber, goes through its paces during spectacular trials. Jato units help get the sleek swept-wing bomber into the air. Stratojet will form backbone of future bomber fleets.

METALLIC BATHING SUITS
CYPRESS GARDENS, FLA. – Something new and dazzling – metallic swim suits. Willa Worthington of Portland designs these trick suits of metallic cloth, which take on added lustre when worn by alluring Florida lassies.

WATER SKIERS OVER THE JUMPS
CYPRESS GARDENS, FLA. – Jumps as high as 73 feet are recorded as top-notch water skiers of both sexes try their skill over tricky hurdles. Some get a good dunking for their efforts, and the winner gets his trophy on the run.

SKI JUMP CHILLS AND SPILLS
DUBUQUE, IOWA – Starting with a pretty Snow Queen and her court, the Longview Ski Club’s tourney keeps up an exciting pace, with U.S. and foreign ski champs competing for honors. The spills will give you the chills.

GREEK REDS WIPE OUT TOWN
NAOUSSA – Blown-up factories, gutted homes, and weeping widows attest the brutal violence of communist forces which overpowered the city’s garrison and indulged in an orgy of slaughter before retreating back to the hills.

DOMINION PARLIAMENT OPENS
OTTAWA, ONT. – For the first time, the newsreel camera goes behind the scenes to record impressive scenes of the formal opening of Parliament. Viscount Alexander officiates, as new members are introduced to the Senate and House of Congress.

GAS BLAST WRECKS PLANT
CHICAGO – Incredible scenes of destruction follow explosion at a gas generating plant. Hundreds were injured when thunderous blast blew out walls of building, rocking wide area and shattering windows nearby. Firemen battle flames for hours.

BLIZZARD TOLL RISES IN WEST
COLORADO & WYOMING – While ranchers fight to save their herds, fresh storms bring new hardships to the range states. Mechanized equipment is brought into action, as the Army mobilizes to save marooned humans and animals alike.

MARCH OF DIMES PARADE
LOS ANGELES – With Gen. Mark Clark as grand marshal, and with hundreds of thousands looking on. Los Angeles goes all out for the March of Dimes. Nineteen gals floats, pretty girls, and marching troops make it colorful affair.

LEARNING HOW NOT TO SKI!
BANFF, CANADA – Skiing can be easy. Oh, yeah? See what happens to Eddie Hunter when he tries out his skis for the first time. It may look funny to you, but not to Eddie. He knocks all the slalom stakes down, and almost loses his glasses.

TRACK STARS SHINE IN MEET
NEW YORK – The upset victory of Wisconsin’s Don Gehrmann in the Wanamaker Mile is the big thrill of the Millrose Games. 16,000 fans see Gehrmann beat Willem Slykhuls of Holland. Other track and field events are shown in this exciting round-up.

U.S. HAILS FRENCH GIFT TRAIN
NEW YORK – The French freighter Magellen, with “Merci America” painted on her sides, brings the 49-car Gratitude Train, sent by the people of France. A colorful salute awaits the ship, and a gala parade is held up Broadway, as city and government officials welcome the gift train.

SOVIET TROOPS QUIT KOREA
KOREA – Rare films from Red-dominated northern Korea, where Russian troops are shown marching through the streets ostensibly on their way home. Huge throngs look on, as the world ponders this new move in communist world politics.

SNOWMOBILE IN ARCTIC DEBUT
NORTHERN MANITOBA – Here’s a mechanical answer to an Arctic prayer – a snowmobile that can go anywhere, on ice or snow, at a mile a minute clip. Half auto and half tractor, the vehicle cuts down the time of the old-fashioned dog-teams.

NEW SONIC PLANE TESTED
MUROC, CALIF. – The Air Force’s new research craft, the X-4, goes up for its first flight tests. Northrop pilot Charles Tucker flies the swept-wing, semi-tailless plane powered by gas turbine engines. The X-4 will provide vital subsonic data.

MARCH OF DIMES STYLE SHOW
NEW YORK – Dame Fashion goes all out for charity, as the 1949 March of Dimes Fashion show is presented to an enthusiastic audience at the Waldorf. Stage and screen personalities, including Irene Rich and Bea Lillie, lend their talents to help swell the polio fund.

TEXAS HOLDS CITRUS FIESTA
MISSION, TEXAS – Pretty girls and colorful floats, and a style show where lovely models wear clothes made from fruits, make the Citrus Fiesta a gala affair. Thousands jam the city for the colorful festival.

NEW U.S. SKI-JUMP RECORD
SNOQUALMIE PASS, WASH. – A new American jumping record is set by Sverre Kongsgaard of Norway – 290 feet on Olympian Hill. Kongsgaard’s leap, greatest outside Europe, takes place during spectacular meet. The slow motion camera shows thrilling moments as the slat-men fly through the air.

SPANISH FLY-WEIGHTS MIX IT
BARCELONA – Luis Romero, Spain’s feather-weight champ, goes down to defeat before the trying fists of the challenger, Luis de Santiago, as thousands whoop it up at ringside. In the tenth, Romero is tagged by a sharp right, and de Santiago is the new champ.
