Iwo Jima is invaded by the U.S. 5th and 3rd Marine Division after 70-days of naval and aerial bombardment by the ships and planes of the 5th fleet. Sights and sounds of the longest bombardment of the war. A landing craft is hit by enemy shells leaving wreckage and dead. Shows damaged plane landing on aircraft carrier with landing gear up. Another U.S. plane crashes into the ocean next to carrier. Shows rescue of pilot by destroyer and transfer by to carrier by breeches buoy. Aerial views of invasion force. Amphibious tracked vehicles or armored amphibians used in invasion. Shows first Japanese prisoners being transferred from landing craft to ship. Shows Marines moving up from the beach. Most combat footage or scenes were filmed or shot from inside a marine tank.
