At Yalta, in the Russian Crimea, the Allied big three laid plans for final victory in WWII and for the occupation and control of Germany. More importantly Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin dedicated their nations to the foundation for permanent peace through a United Nations Organization. The Allied Armies meet at the River Ebe. Suddenly President Roosevelt FDR is dead (scene of his burial). WWII ends and In Tokyo Bay General Macarthur accepts surrender of Japan.

In San Francisco California delegates from 50 nations meet to form the United Nations Organization.

Soon the U.N was put to the test as they attempt to resolve disputes in four countries.

Indonesian independence
Footage of the Republic of Indonesia, formerly a Netherlands nationalized colony, the Dutch East Indies. After WWII and Japanese occupation, the Netherlands tried to re-establish their their colony. Dutch forces re-occupied most of Indonesia's territory. In 1947 the hostilities in Indonesia was brought to the attention of the United Nations. The UN immediately issued a cease fire order and appointed a committee to negotiate the dispute. The two parties signed a truce in January 1948.

Hostilities broke out again in December 1948, Operation Kraal, and Jakarta and other towns in Java and Sumatra fell to the Netherlands Forces (Dutch Forces). Refugees flee before the Dutch Forces. UN met in emergency session, called for a cease fire, and recommended the establishment of an independent United States Of Indonesia. At the Hague in 1949 Queen Juliana of the Netherlands signed the document which transferred complete sovereignty to the Republic of The United States of Indonesia. On December 17, 1949 Sukamo was elected President of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia.

Sub-Continent of India
After WWII and years of British rule, the British made plans to give India complete freedom. A sticking point was the partition between Hindu India and Moslem Pakistan. Meeting were held between Hindu leader Mohandas Gandhi, and Moslem leader Mohammed Ali Jinnah. Pandit Nehru succeeded to Hindu leader after death of Gandhi and under his leadership India independence was proclaimed on August 15, 1947. Moslem Pakistan also gained their independence at same time. The partition of India quickly led to disputes, the first with the independent states of Jammu & Kashmir which had joined India. India sent troops into Kashmir. Fighting erupts in the Jammu and Kashmir states; Nehru and Liaquat Ali Kahn of Pakistan discuss the Kashmir problem.


British Mandate Ends - New State Of Israel Proclaimed
In 1947, Britain requested that the UN retract its Mandate on Israel. The UN established and sent a special committee to Palestine to study the problems and make recommendations. The special committee spent months in Palestine conferring with Arabs and Jews. The committee recommendation that was accepted by the United Nations was to partition Palestine into an Arab State and a Jewish State with the City of Jerusalem under international control. On November 29, 1947, the General Assembly voted in favor of partition, which became known as UN Resolution 181. This recommendation led to the Arab-Israeli War of 1947-1948 in Mandatory Palestine, also called Arab-Israeli Civil War of 1947-1948.

The United Nations appointed Count Folke Bernadotte of Sweden as special mediator and charged him with negotiating a peace settlement in Palestine. While striving for peace Count Folke Bernadotte was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948 by militant Zionist group Lehi or Stern Group. Count Folke Bernadotte was replaced by Dr. Ralph J. Bunche who negotiates the 1949 Armistice Agreements between Israel and Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, shows signing of 1949 Armistice or Peace Agreements.

The British Mandate of Palestine was set to expire on May 15, 1948. Since the 15th came out on Shabbat that year, the National Council convened on Friday, May 14, 1948 and declared the establishment of the State of Israel. Korean War
The division of Korea at the 38th parallel seemed ideally suited for settlement under the auspices of the United Nations. Jacob Malik, Soviet chairman of the Security Council, stalls all action to reunite Korea into one nation. Shows free elections in South Korea. Shows invasion of South Korea by the Communist North Korean Army. Shows Korean refugees fleeing the North Korean Army. The North Korean Government ignored a cease fire order from the United Nations.

The UN ordered military action against the invaders. General Douglas Macarthur leads U.N. forces in Korea and upon his first visit to Korea accepts the first United Nations battle flag. Scenes of the fighting in South Korea as American troops fight a delaying action trading space for time until more troops arrived. Jacob Malik, Soviet chairman of the Security Council, blocked all action on the Korean situation. Warren Austin, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, lays the bloodshed in Korea at the feet of North Korea and the Soviet Union.
