Men are initiated at the Equator. The ship anchors at Pitcairn Island, natives row to the ship with fresh food, and a party visits the island. Shows a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian. The North Star enters Ahurei Bay at Rapa Island. Shows stone forts on volcanic peaks that once guarded the village. The North Star turns toward the polar regions and enters the main ice pack on January 8, 1940. North Star enters Bay of Whales.
Shows pod of whales. The USS Bear left boston late November 1939 and arrives at Little America in a driving snow storm. A mid-night sun permits around the clock unloading. Shows crab-eater seal and a sea leopard seal. USS Bear departs to explore unknown regions east of Cape Colbeck. Habitat of the Emperor Penguin. The USS Bear departs for South Victoria Land. On February 8 the USS Bear began her major exploratory cruise toward Palmer Peninsula. A hugh tabular berg offers lee for a takeoff for the airplane. An island camp site is selected and supplies unloaded.
Cargo ashore the ships turn homeward on March 21, 1940. The USS Bear steered north to Cape Horn. A Barkley-Grow seaplane is loaded on the North Star. A seal is lassoed and penguins are fed.
