Synopsis: Lt. Col. Oliver North testified before the Senate Select Committee on Secret Assistance to Iran and the Nicaraguan Opposition in July 1987. This political scandal, the Iran-Contra Affair, involved senior U.S. figures that facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, the subject of an arms embargo, to secure the release of hostages and to fund Nicaraguan Contras.
Senior figures involved were National Security Advisor John M. Poindexter along with NSC staffer Lt. Col. Oliver North. His testimony addressed threats on his life by a terrorist assassin, refusal of the FBI or other governmental agency to provide security for him and his family, installation and the cover-up of payment for a home security system, an untraceable trip to Iran, and the offer his wife received for his family to be taken care of should he meet an untimely death. |
