Synopsis: Use of maps, paintings, engravings, and re-enactment footage to illustrate the U.S. westward movement during the the first half of the 19th century and the cultural and technological development of that period. Depicts immigrants arriving in the new world aboard a sailing ship, paddle wheel steamer on river, picking cotton, pioneer wagon train hardships with snow, mud, and river crossing. Pioneers fight off Indian attack from behind circled wagons, wagons are lowered down sheer cliff. Many wagon train scenes. Development of the steam engine and soon the railroads extend coast to coast. The telegraph is invented as a means of communication. Depicts the finding of gold in 1848 and the gold rush to California. This was the beginning of a westward movement and settling of the west and Pacific coast areas of America. |
