Submarine 'Thresher' Lost At Sea With All Hands, Nation Mourns
I conclude with great regret and sadness that the submarine USS Thresher (SSN-593) is lost and with those words Admiral George Anderson, chief of Naval operations, mounted an epitaph for 129 men aboard the nuclear powered submarine
After an overhaul the U.S.S. Thresher, fastest and deepest diving of all submarines, was on a test dive in 8,400 feet of water, 200 miles east of Boston, accompanied by the tender Skylark. Presumably the Thresher rests on the ocean’s bottom. Her fate recalls a happier one – that of the Squalus in 1939. With a diving bell the Navy was able to rescue the 33 men who were still alive.

Gregory Peck Wins Best Actor Oscar At Academy Awards
The most glamorous night in glamorous Hollywood draws a glittering crowd the 35th annual Academy Awards. There’s an air of electrified anticipation among the stars, including Angie Dickinson, Gregory Peck’s new leading lady in “Captain Newman, M.D.”
The awards go to Ed Begley, Patty Duke, Anne Bancroft and Gregory Peck with the crowd giving an ovation to Mr. Peck, an extremely popular figure in movie circles who had been nominated before only to lose out. His performance in “To Kill a Mockingbird” however, shoots him to the top of the “Oscar” heap. The picture in which he starred also won two other awards.
