NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1946 (UE46001)

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
In his first radio address of 1946, President Truman tells Americans of the many problems facing the country during te reconversion period. He calls on all Americans for a full production program and for faith in the nation’s future.

FLOODS RAGE IN NORTHWEST
EUGENE, ORE. – The swollen Willamette overflows its banks and goes on a rampage which makes 1,000 families homeless and causes widespread damage throughout one of Oregon’s most prosperous regions.

ADMIRAL HALSEY IS INITIATED
NEW YORK – At hilarious ceremonies the Saints and Sinners, the theatre’s fun-making organization, induct the Pacific hero into their midst. A roster of greats and near greats witness the performance. An that white horse is there again.

TOURNAMENT OF ROSES
PASADENA – The tournament of Roses, more spectacular than ever, emerges after the war years. Floats of breath taking beauty adorn the parade. And all this is a prelude to the Rose Bowl game in which Alabama topples Southern California by a 34 to 14 score.

MERRY MUMMERS
PHILADELPHIA – The Quaker City again stages its colorful New Year’s Day parade – a custom that dates from before the civil war. With war at an end, costumes are more elaborate than ever and merriment is unrestrained.

ORANGE BOWL THRILLER
MIAMI – In the Orange Bowl contest Miami and Holy Cross stage a hair raising game that is decided in Miami’s favor when an intercepted pass was run back 89 yards for a touchdown. The final score 13 to 6.

GEN. MARSHALL IN CHINA
SHANGHAI – President Truman’s special envoy arrives to undertake his mission of bringing peace to warring China. He is welcomed by General Wedemeyer and high-ranking Chinese officials. He will act as arbiter between the National government and the Communists.

HOUSING SPEED-UP
WASHINGTON – Wilson Wyatt, appointed housing expediter by President Truman, says GI’s are demanding action on this problem and they are going to get it.

SOCIABILITY IN JAPAN
Yank occupation troops undertake serious research into Japanese customs, under the guidance of Nippon’s fair maids. There are tougher ways of learning the language.

FAST COUNT FOR JOE (Exclusive)
ATLANTA – Up pops Sergeant Patterson with a gimmick that has three dials and tells you how long you’ve been in, faster than you can say discharge. They’re so popular that 150 are being made.

THRILLS IN VIENNA
VIENNA – Occupation weary GI’s get a break. They witness the first motorcycle race held in the Austrian capital in the last seven years, Riders from Hungary, England and Austria put on quite a show.

FIGHTING TIGERS BACK
TACOMA – The 23rd Fighter Group, which includes the famed Flying Tigers, arrives after hunting Japs all over Asia’s skies. An eight year old Chinese boy, their mascot, is aboard, officially a stowaway. It’s just possible the Tigers know more than they tell.

JAP PRISONERS LEAVE U.S.
WILMINGTON – Very camera shy, 1,462 Japanese prisoners are loaded aboard a transport for return to Japan, via Hawaii. Some of them may be kept in Hawaii to be used in work battalions.

SKI HERO HONORED
BEAR MOUNTAIN – On the ski jump on which he made many of his records, Torger Tokle is honored in a memorial contest by some of the country’s outstanding jumpers. Tokle was killed in Italy while leading his mountain troops to the attack.

PARATROOP TRIPLETS
NEW YORK – The 82nd Airborne arrive, and they’re all proud foster pappies to the seven month old Glass triplets, whose father is an American GI and mother a British girl. Already they have raised more than $4,000 for the babies.

GI VICTORY PARADE
NEW YORK – Members of the famous 82nd Airborne Division symbolize all GI victories as they stride along the “Avenue of Heroes.” Three million New Yorkers cheer themselves hoarse as the veterans of three campaigns put on their show, complete with tanks, airplanes and gliders.

HELICOPTER RECORDS BROKEN
BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – Altitude, speed and lift records go by the board with plenty to spare, as the newest Sikorsky “egg beater” is put through its paces. Twenty-one thousand feet altitude is just one of the marks set.

“WILD BILL” DECORATED
WASHINGTON – General Donovan, organizer and commander of the Office of Strategic services, receives the Oak Leaf cluster of the Distinguished Medal from President Truman. His “Cloak and Dagger” intelligence service performed hair-raising feats during the war.

VETERANS DEMONSTRATE
LONG BEACH, CAL. – Veterans demonstrate to call attention to their plan for the formation of air freight and express service which they claim would give employment of thousands of former army air personnel.

CANADA HONORS IKE
General Eiseenhower is given an ovation as he visits Ottawa and is received by Prime Minister MacKenzie King. At the University of Toronto he receives an honorary degree of doctor of laws.

‘PLANE SKIING’
MIAMI – Probably for the first time a plane tows a water skier. Champion Bruce Parker starts off on his water skis behind a speed boat and then transfers his tow to a flying plane. Bruce really moves after that.

UNO OPENS SESSIONS
LONDON – Paul Henri Spaak of Belgium is elected first president of the assembly after a spirited election. The new president declares the assembly open for business. King George welcomes the delegates at a banquet preceding the opening session.

DEMOBILIZATION PLANS
WASHINGTON – General Eisenhower, Chief of Staff, tells the country that no eligible veteran will be kept in uniform a moment longer than necessary. Any man who had a right to expect discharge by June 30 will be home or on his way, the general says.

ADM. KIMMEL TESTIFIES
WASHINGTON – The admiral who was relieved of his command following the Pearl Harbor disaster, tells the senate committee that he failed to receive information that would have put the navy on a complete war alert.

FISHING SWEEPSTAKES
MIAMI – A resplendent marine pageant opens the $10,000 fishing contest – an annual affair. If the fish bite as well as the anglers go after those prizes it will really be something. But the gaily decorated boats are the real highlight of the event.

FLASHING BLADES
NEW YORK – One hundred and forty of the East’s fastest skaters flash around the track at Madison Square Garden in the 22nd Annual Silver Skates finals. Some spectacular spills enliven the hot competition.

BRITISH RAIL CRASH
DURHAM, ENGLAND – Ten persons die when the London-Newcastle express ploughs into a freight train near here. Coaches are splintered and piled 20 feet high.

CHURCHILL IN FLORIDA
MIAMI – Britain’s former prime minister arrives to spend six weeks resting in the sunshine at Miami Beach. At a press conference he warns of too rapid a spread of collectivism in the world.

MARCH OF DIMES
All over the nation the annual March of Dimes gets under way, in the crusade against infantile paralysis. Mrs. Truman and her daughter Margaret, officially open the capital’s campaign.

At Dime Box, Texas, Basil O’Connor, head of the Infantile Paralysis Foundation, opens the drive with a radio address. At the Philadelphia mint, dimes hearing the likeness of the late President Roosevelt are struck off.

STASSEN HEADS BROTHERHOOD
CHICAGO – The former governor of Minnesota is chosen to head National Brotherhood week. He makes a plea for religious and racial tolerance, the keystones of American liberty.

REBUILDING WARSAW
WARSAW – Citizens of this war-ravaged city bend their backs to the staggering task of digging their homes out of the rubble, and rebuilding Warsaw to its former splendor.

END OF THE RAINBOW CLUB
LONDON – A gala celebration closes the famous GI service club. Throngs crowd the doors to gain a glimpse of Mrs. Roosevelt who addresses the guests.

DONKEY SHINES (Exclusive)
REVERE, MASS. – Marianna is her name. She lords it over six rooms and bath in a swank neighborhood. She eats daintily when she feels like, and considers herself a socialite. She’s quite a donkey.

TIGER TRIPLETS (Exclusive)
MIAMI – It’s a very rare occasion that tigers are born in captivity. But it happened at the zoo here. Mama is very proud, but as usual, the old man takes the bows – all 650 pounds of him.

AMATEUR SLUGGERS (Exclusive)
NEW YORK – As usual there is action and plenty of canvas kissing as the 147-pounders mix it in the Golden Gloves eliminations. They go in swinging, and it’s no place for glass jaws.

ATOM BOMB TESTS
WASHINGTON – The special committee on atomic energy hears Vice-Admiral Blandy give the details of government atomic bomb tests that may well shape the course of human existence. A fleet of 150 captured enemy ships and discarded U.S. vessels will become the guinea pigs in a remote Pacific atoll. The cruiser Prinz Eugen, once pride of the German navy, arrives at Boston to become a part of the bomb test fleet.

END OF U.S. ISOLATION
LONDON – Secretary Byrnes tells members of the United Nations Organization that the United States will enter whole-heartedly into the world organization for keeping the peace.

MARSHALL MEDIATES
CHUNGKING – The former U.S. chief of staff meets with members of the Chinese Nationalist and Communist factions. He has been asked to help them iron out differences and make up a representative government.

AID FOR MARTYRED CASSINO (Exclusive)
CASSINO – Charitable organizations and business firms in Rome join to send gifts of food and clothing to inhabitants of Cassino, ravaged in one of the most savage battles of the Italian campaign.

WAINWRIGHT’S NEW COMMAN
SAN ANTONIO – The hero of Corregidor takes over the Fourth Army in a rapid-fire and colorful ceremony at Fort Sam Houston. Gen. Wainwright is greeted by Major General Lucas, former commander.

DIMES SET FASHION
NEW YORK – Some of Gothan’s loveliest models parade the latest in swank evening gowns. This dazzling show is all for sweet charity – one of the greatest of them all – the March of Dimes, America’s crusade against Infantile Paralysis.

SKI JUMP CHAMPS
CARY, ILL. – The governor’s trophy brings 98 entrants from all parts of the country to the fortieth anniversary contest. Several contestants topped 170 feet in a thrilling meet.

U.S. SEIZES MEAT PLANTS
Gayle Armstrong representing the Department of Agriculture, meets with heads of the Chicago packing plants and arranges for government operation. Union leaders, promised government backing in wage adjustment, give assurance of cooperation in meat production.

SECURITY COUNCIL OPENS
LONDON – The security council of the United Nations Organization opens for business. U.S. Delegate Stettinius points to the gravity of the tasks confronting the council and the vital necessity of success.

CARRIER SHAKES DOWN
The Franklin D. Roosevelt, one of America’s two mightiest carriers, goes through her paces during a shakedown cruise in the Caribean sea. Planes take advantage of the cruise to get in a little practice.

NAVY GRAVEYARD
KIEL – This harbor, once the lair of the Nazi fleet, is now the graveyard of ships and hopes. The bleaching bones of the once proud high seas fleet testifies to the accuracy of Allied bombing.

PLANE AIR BRAKES
SANTA MONICA, CAL. – A new navy Douglas dive bomber which can hit 300 miles per hour plus, has as its unique feature a set of air brakes that can slow the plane down to landing speed in a matter of seconds.

DAFFY MILLINERY
MIAMI – If you’re shy a potato masher, sink strainer or other kitchen gadget, you might find it on the beautiful noggin of one of the gals who show the latest in tin chapeaus down this way.

FUN IN THE SUN
MIAMI – At a benefit water show some enterprising young spirits attempt to beat that old greased pole racket – with the usual results. It’s just a hard way of getting dunked.

SHIP SALVAGE
Britain is confronted with two fold postwar task. The sunken hulks of war must be cleared from channel, harbor and dock areas. Ships that can be reconditioned and used, must be raised to holster a badly depleted merchant fleet.

NEW YORK – In the first large-scale arrival of English war wives and babies in the U.S., almost 500 women and 170 tots disembark from the liner Argentina, to meet their anxious husbands and fathers. Some of them explain how it feels to be in America!

U.S. SHIPS MOVER CHINA ARMY
U.S. SHIPS MOVSHRDL THAROD ODOIL OD CHINA – The new Chinese Sixth Army gets a thorough DDT treatment before embarking on American LST’s for Manchuria, where it will act as an occupation force as Russian troops move out.

FLORIDA HAILS BRAHMAN BULL
OCALA, FLA. – Forida cattlemen, headed by Gov. Caldwell, hold America’s biggest Brahman show, in honor of the sacred cow of India which has helped make Florida the third largest cattle-raising state in the U.S.

FAMOUS WARSHIPS IS RETIRED
PHILADELPHIA – Its war days over for the present, the cruiser “Brooklyn” undergoes special storage treatment at the Navy Yard for temporary retirement. It will be ready, however, for immediate service.

VETS “TAKE OVER” BIG HOTEL
VANCOUVER – Canadian veterans force a solution of the housing shortage by moving in and virtually taking over the Hotel Vancouver. City and Dominion officials plan to make the hotel a permanent home for the ex-soldiers.

SNOWSHOE CHAMPS IN GALA EVENT
LEWISTON, MAINE – In their first Winter Carnival since the war, 800 snowshoe enthusiasts arrive from Canada for the gala show and speed events in a typical Winter setting. Plenty of laughs, too.

TRACK STARTS SHINE IN MEET
NEW YORK – 15,000 spectators whoop it up as champion track aces burn up the boards in the annual Millrose Games classic. Army grid star wins speed dash, while national champ retains title in 600-yard thriller.
