OPERATION CROSSROADS
SHIPS READY FOR BIKINI ATOM TEST
Dramatic pictures of the prelude to the epochal atom-bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Battleships, carriers, transports and other vessels are readied for the much-discussed experiment. Army tanks and other equipment are lashed to decks of transports. Admiral Blandy, in charge of the test, explains the reasons and expected results of Operation Crossroads.

RAIL STRIKE GRIPS NATION
Faced with the most serious strike in its history, the U.S. is hard hit by a strike of railroad men. Delayed for five days, the strike finally does begin. Trains are idle; transportation is seriously crippled; passengers are stranded in stations.

NANKING, CHINA – The U.S. Chief of Staff receives gala welcome, as he visits China’s leader during this tour of U.S. Far Eastern bases. Later, in Tokyo, he meets Gen. MacArthur and reviews 8th Army parade.

TRUMAN ACTION ENDS U.S. TIE-UP
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two days after it started, a grave threat to our already strained national economy, the railroad strike comes to an end, only minutes before the deadline set down by the President in his speech to the nation. Later, appearing before Congress, Pres. Truman calls for legislation to forestall future strikes against the government.

REIDSVILLE, N.C. – It’s “Four of a kind” for the James Fultz’s when Mrs. Annie Mae Fultz presents her husband, “Pete,” already father of six, with four more girls. They’re all doing nicely, thank you.

MADISON, N.J. – A black cocker spaniel, Benbow’s Beau, adds another canine victory to his belt by getting best in show at the Morris and Essex Kennel Club classic, revived after five years of war.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – To check the spread of polio, this Lone Star city used up-to-date methods – spraying the entire town with insect-killing D.D.T Special vehicles, and individuals, help lay down a smoke-screen

COAL STRIKE ENDS
Final settlement in Washington between John L. Lewis and the government brings to an end the crippling mine tie-up. In soft-coal pits throughout the nation, miners go back to work as our supply of coal is at a record low.

FLOODS SWEEP EAST
At least 20 persons are dead, thousands are homeless, as flood waters run rampant over large area in New York and Pennsylvania. Cities and farms are inundated, and damage will run into the millions.

ANIMALS BOARD ATOM ARK
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. – Two hundred goats, along with pigs and other animals, go aboard Navy transport for shipment to Bikini Atoll, where they will serve their country as “guinea pigs” in coming atom-bomb tests.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Future Army officers pass in review in honor of “Marty,” 70-year old ex-sergeant and Academy employee for fifty years. A full dress parade is fitting tribute for popular Martin Maher.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Cardinal Spellman of New York, and Cardinal Griffin of England, look over shipments of canned foods donated by Catholic charities to help alleviate starvation abroad.

BLACK EDUCATION HONORED
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Booker T. Washington, the late Black educator who rose from slavery to international eminence, is honored as his bust is unveiled in the Hall of Fame. Tribute to a great American.

MOTORIST IS NO DUMMY!
SEATTLE, WASH. – Starting on a cross-country trip by car and being nervous about picking up hitch-hikers, C.W. Johnson has rigged up two life-like dummies to ride along with him and discourage would-be hitch-hikers.

“QUADS” ARE TEXAS RANGERS (Dallas only)
AUSTIN, TEXAS – The four Badgett sisters are sworn in as members of the famed Lone Star Rangers organization. In cowboy attire, the seven-year old quadruplets toss a mean lasso.

INDIANAPOLIS SPEEDWAY RACE
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – A record throng of 175,000 fans sees thirty-three racing cars get away in the 500-mile Memorial Day classic – but only seven finish, 150 laps later, after several bad accidents. The winner is George Robson, who averaged over 114 miles an hour.

TRUMANS GET DEGREES
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At George Washington College, the President sees his daughter Margaret receive her diploma; later, at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., the President receives and honorary degree.

EISENHOWER IN D-DAY PLEA
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a stirring plea to the nation, on the second anniversary of D-Day, our Chief of Staff lands our fighting men for the victorious past and calls on the nation’s youth to enlist.

KIDS ON POLICE OUTING
NEW YORK, N.Y. – It’s a thrill for hundreds of underprivileged youngsters, all guest of the Police Athletic League, when they go on an outing on board the steamer Clermont for a day on the Hudson River.

NEW YORK – Turfdom’s coveted “Triple Crown” is won by the speedy Texas-bred thoroughbred as he wins the rich Belmont Stakes by three lengths before a huge crown. The Derby – Preakness – and now “Assault” becomes the seventh horse in racing history to win all three.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – With War Secretary Patterson on hand to present diplomas, the Military Academy’s largest class – 875 strong – completes its undergraduate training. Highlight is the dress parade.

JAPAN – Dramatic pictures of atom bomb damage in Hiroshima and Nagasaki foreshadow the coming Bikini Atoll experiment. Intense heat and light of blast seared shadows of human beings on destroyed bridges!

SCORES DIE IN HOTEL FIRE
CHICAGO, ILL. – The LaSalle Hotel is a charred and grisly tomb of 59 persons, following one of the most disastrous fires in city’s history. Scores were trapped when flames broke out in lower floors of the hotel, in downtown “Loop.”

“HAP” ARNOLD SETTLES DOWN
SONOMA, CALIF. – The famed five-star commander of our air forces during the war comes to earth in retirement, settling down on his “Valley of the Moon” ranch. Happy Landings, “Hap.”

DETROIT, MICH. – An industry that gave America wheels of freedom hails its fiftieth America wheels of freedom hails its fiftieth anniversary, with a colorful parade of early-day jalopies and quaint floats that thrills thousands.

ITALY – Following mass demonstrations and a democratic referendum, Italian voters cast their lot with the democracies and oust their king. The majority, who voted republican, wanted “No More Balconies!”

LONDON – Two million spectators, including the King and Queen, view monster victory parade on the anniversary of final triumph over the Axis. All day celebration is key, noted by marching men and machines of war, with American contingent leading the way.

STEWART FIELD, N.Y. – Airborne troops from Fort Benning demonstrate latest tactics in capturing an “enemy” airfield, as graduates of the 1947 West Point class look on. Just watch ‘em hit the silk!

SAFETY SEAT FOR PILOTS
DAYTON, OHIO – An amazing ejection device that tosses pilot and parachute to safety from a crippled plane is tried out by Air Forces technicians at Wright Field. The pilot releases the device – and presto!

FLOODS IN SPAIN
SPAIN – Threatened with international boycott by the United Nations, Franco Spain has troubles right at home as flood waters ravage farms and cities over a wide area. Thousands are homeless.

Another “now it can be told.” The navy takes the wrappings off a rocket so powerful that an ordinary landing craft armed with it has the fire power of five destroyers. They throw rockets so fast it makes you dizzy.

JAP PEARL CULTURE
JAPAN – With the end of the war, Kokichi Mikimoto, an ancient Japanese who holds the secret of pearl culture, resumes operations at his forty-thousand acre pearl “farm” on Ago Bay. His girl pearl divers are truly amazing.

OIL FIRE RAGES
WHITING, IND. – The barrel house of the Standard Oil Company goes up in smoke as hundreds of containers of lubricating oil burn. The company’s main high octane gasoline tanks are saved by heroic efforts.

PERSONALITIES IN THE NEWS
General Walter Smith, U.S. Ambassador to Russia, presents his credentials at the Kremlin… Marlene Dietrich arrives in Paris to make a motion picture with Jean Gabin… Another screen celebrity, Madeline Carroll, is in Madrid for the same purpose. Doctor Nicholas Murray Butler, president emeritus of Columbia, is honored by his home town, Patterson, N.J.
