BRUSSELS FAIR HAS GALA OPENING DAY:
Belgium’s King Baudouin officially opens the Brussels World’s Fair. Opening day festivities bring throngs to the colorful 500-acre grounds where the Russian and American pavilions out-draw all others.

MONACO HEIR:
The new heir apparent to the throne of Monaco is baptized in a solemn ceremony attended by a notable array of royalty.

MOUNTAINEERS go to school in the Cascade Mountains of Canada, to learn rescue techniques in anticipation of the tourist season.

RUNNING RAPIDS:
The trout season opens in Oregon but the fish have a day off as hundreds of daring boatmen run the rolling rapids of the McKenzie River.

WOOD MEMORIAL:
At Jamaica in New York, Jewel’s Reward, with Eddie Arcaro atop, beats off a home stretch challenge by Noureddin for a spectacular finish.

STANLEY CUP:
Despite a terrific third period rally by the underdog Boston Bruins, Montreal’s Canadians win the Stanley Cup. Their third straight Hockey championship.

TEXAS PIANIST WINS TOP SOVIET MUSIC PRIZE:
In Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, Texas’ Van Cliburn wins the Tchaikowsky Competition, one of the toughest and most prestigious in the world of music with a bravura performance that makes him the toast of Moscow. A rare feat by an American-born, American-trained musician.

ECLIPSE IN JAPAN:
A solar eclipse arouses remarkable popular interest in Japan. The last that will be visible from there this century. It is viewed not only by scientists but by crowds that fill city streets.

49 DIE IN PLANE CRASH:
A mid-air collision between a New York bound transport and an Air Force supersonic jet kills all aboard both planes. The crash – blamed on overcrowded airlanes, took place in clear skies.

QUEEN SORAYA:
Ex-Queen Soraya of Iran arrives in New York, following her divorce by the Shah for failure to bear an heir to the throne. The lovely young Princess is eagerly greeted by the press.

DOOLITTLE HONORED:
General Jimmy Doolittle and the survivors of his Tokyo raiders, holding their reunion in Las Vegas, Nev., are joined by a plane – a replica of the B-25 Doolittle flew in the famous and daring attack.

MODES GO MEXICAN:
Pretty American models tour south of the border, out-rivaling local color with their travel wardrobes. On the sight-seeing agenda is the spectacular daredevil divers at Acapulco.

FUN AT THE FAIR:
At the Brussels Fair, a story devoted to fun and frolic – following an average Joe away from the industrial and art exhibits to the sword-swallower. The roller-coaster – the beer garden and dancing in the streets.

ISRAEL’S TENTH ANNIVERSARY:
In Jerusalem, Israel celebrates its 10th Anniversary as a nation with a military parade of 5,000 crack troops despite Arab protests of truce violations.

WEST INDIES FEDERATION:
In Trinidad, Princess Margaret arrives as official representative of the Queen – giving impetus to the new nation’s constitution.

WINSTON CHURCHILL:
Winston Churchill’s paintings go on exhibition in the Smithsonian Institute. The amateur painter’s showing is opened by another well-known amateur artist, President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

RUSSO-GERMAN TRADE PACT:
On the first visit of a top Soviet leader to West Germany, Deputy Premier Mikoyan signs agreement that will double trade between the to nations.

TRACK THRILLS AT PENN RELAYS:
In Philadelphia, an all-time record crowd sees sensational track performances at the 64th Penn Relays. In the 100-yard dash, Dave Sime edges out a victory. The Villanova relay team takes the mile event with a terrific finish by Ed Collymore.

VANGUARD FIRED MOON FAILS TO ORBIT:
At Cape Canaveral, Florida, a Vanguard carrying a 20-inch satellite makes a near-perfection take-off – but the “moon” fails to orbit, due to a misfire of the rocket’s third stage.

POLARIS TESTED:
In California, development of the Navy’s Polaris proceeds with tests of the system that will permit launching from submerged U-boats, firing a steel and concrete dummy.

INFLATO-PLANE:
In Akron, Ohio, the Navy shows it’s new rubberized fabric airplane. One man starts with a folded mass, adds air, and presto! An air-filled, amphibious and very airworthy little craft.

SNOW PASS:
Chinook Pass, Washington, actually, is cleared of its winter-long accumulation of 20 feet of snow. A massive road clearing job amid some of America’s noblest vistas.

PRINCESS’ TOUR:
Princess Margaret’s 18-day tour of the new West Indian Federation continues. On Tobago, she is hailed by crowds and visits a children’s hospital.

SEAL HUNTING:
On the Caspian Sea, hunters jumping from ice-floe to ice-floe pursue elusive quarry, but the nimble seals fall prey to their own curiosity.

WALKING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Heel-and-toe and away they go! In the National 20 kilometer walking championship, held this year in Baltimore, Maryland. Rain doesn’t deter the stubborn striders – who are topped by New York’s Ron Laird with a determined 7 m.p.h. average speed.

REDS HARASS WEST BERLIN:
West Berlin’s river and canal traffic, a key artery for 30% of the city’s supplies, is subjected to a million dollar a year toll by Red-ruled East Germany, raising the threat of another economic blockade.

MAY DAY IN PRAGUE:
Marked by a four and a half hour parade in which 100,000 (by Red estimate) march in salute to their Communist rulers.

MAY DAY IN VATICAN-TOMRE:
Pope Pius XII proclaims Saint Joseph the Artisan protector of the working man. A stature of the Saint is flown in by helicopter.

GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE’S BIRTHPLACE:
Visited by President Eisenhower and the First Lady. A noble 18th Century mansion with deep roots in American history is brought into the news.

NIXON IN SOUTH AMERICA:
Beginning a three week good-will tour of South America, Vice-President Richard Nixon is hailed by crowds in Uruguay. In Argentina – traffic ensnarlments delay his arrival at the inaugural ceremonies of President Arturo Frondizi.

DERBY DAY:
Running of the 84th Kentucky Derby sees the favorite, Silky Sullivan, fail to finish first. It’s Tim Tam – fabulous Calumet’s colt who outruns Lincoln Road in the final yards to win one of the most thrilling races ever run at Churchill Downs.

APPLE BLOSSOM FESTIVAL:
Winchester, Virginia is the scene of the 31st Apple Blossom Festival. Speaker Sam Rayburn crowns Daphne Fairbanks as Queen of the two day celebration.

IT’S A WET AND COSTLY SPRING:
Coast-to-Coast it is a wet, dour spring. The luxury community of Portuguese Bend, California, is rapidly rolling into the Pacific Ocean. The result of a massive earthslide. While record rains hit the Northeast with dozens of rivers and streams reaching flood proportions in Mississippi, Kentucky, Virginia and west Virginia. Damages already in excess of ten million dollars.

U.S. WORLD TRADE FAIR:
Opens in New York City with sixty nations represented. Thousands of exhibitors stage a gala spectacle of industry and commerce for the benefit of visitors from all over the universe.

CARDINAL STRITCH:
Former Archbishop of Chicago, leaves the hospital in Rome for a drive through sunny Italy – just one week after the amputation of his right arm. Surgeons report the 70-year old prince of the Church is making excellent progress.

ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL:
Not yet fully rebuilt 18 years after its near destruction in the Battle of Britain, is the scene of a solemn but joyous ceremony dedicating a new High Altar.

LINGERIE FASHIONS:
Previewed in Rome. New Italian styles range from sack-like nightgowns to harem pajamas. Lots of new twists on some favorite, frilly themes.

SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Britain’s Cup Final. The World Series of Soccer is won by the Bolton Wanderers from Manchester United. The team that was nearly obliterated in a catastrophic air crash at the beginning of the season.

MOTORCYCLE HILL CLIMB:
At East Lewiston, Idaho is a thrill-packed event. So dangerously thrill-packed in fact that newsreel cameramen are drawn too close for safety. One is hit by a flying bike – narrowly escaping with his life.

REDS HARASS VICE-PRESIDENT NIXON:
While making an 8-nation, good-will tour of South America, Vice-President Richard Nixon is victimized by Communist organized campaign of heckling and harassment. In Peru, he is stoned and spit upon by the Red-led mobs. Later, in Ecuador, he is warmly welcomed by the ruling majority.

MASS CALISTHENICS:
In Madrid, Spain, 10,000 workers participate in an impressive display of organized calisthenics. Among the spectators is Generalissimo Franco.

LOURDES PROCESSION:
The boardwalk, Atlantic City, N.J., usually a playland becomes prayland during festivities honoring the Lourdes Centenary. The Pilgrimage Procession was sponsored by the diocese of Camden, New Jersey. 40,000 persons attend Mass celebrated in Convention Hall in observance of the occasion.

TODDLERS’ BALLET:
Ballet students of an Austrian school are scarcely old enough to toddle yet the tots don tutus and ballet slippers for a scene of rare charm and talent.

HINTS ON HATS:
This is the season when newe hat creations have the gals starry-eyed. And the guys – glassy-eyed! Behind the scenes, a top London designer reveals some secrets of his art. Even the exclusive fashion models are intrigued.

A.A.U. GYMNASTS:
In San Fernando, California, 159 cream of the crop college athletes compete for the A.A.U. Gymnastic Championships. The contest is highlighted by stellar performances on trampoline, rings and high bar. The winner: John Beckner of Los Angeles, California.

BOXING T.KO.:
In Dortmund, German champ Bubi Scholz flattens challenger Max Rasch nine times before the towel is finally tossed in. Lively around the ring doings.

HERO’S WELCOME FOR VICE-PRESIDENT NIXON AFTER VENEZUELA MOB ATTACK:
The motorcade of Vice-President and Mrs. Richard Nixon is halted by mob violence in Venezuela – during the noon day rush hour. The most disgraceful anti-American demonstration yet seen. With inexcusable affronts to America and the free world – insults and indignities hurled at the flag of the United States and it’s Vice-President.

The Nixon’s are enthusiastically and proudly welcomed home at National Airport, Washington. President Eisenhower and top leaders of government are on hand to greet them. Over half-million people line the route to the White House. A salute to courage.

CURRENT AGONY OF FRANCE:
A general strike by French settlers in Algeria and mob rioting protesting the proposed Pflimlin government culminates in an Army coup. A junta led by General Jacques Massu seizes power and calls on the long silent General Charles De Gaulle to take over power in France. Faced with the gravest crisis since World War II, the Assembly votes the Pflimlin government into office by a wide margin – as De Gaulle indicates his readiness to assume leadership. The fabric of France hangs by a thread with the nation on the brink of civil war.

MOMENT OF DECISION FOR FRANCE THE CHALLENGE OF GENERAL CHARLES de GAULLE:
The sixty-seven, six-foot-four enigmatic General pledges to accede to power only by legal means. That is, if asked to do so by French President Rene Coty. 35,000 security troops guard Paris but the City remains calm in the gravest crisis since World War II.

MINE DESTROYER:
At Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the Army Engineers demonstrate the latest counter-measure for land mines. A huge set of rollers pushed by a tank.

EISENHOWER PARK:
Earl Eisenhower, the President’s brother, visits the birthplace of the Chief Executive at Denison, Texas – then goes on to dedication ceremonies of President Eisenhower State Park.

VAN CLIBURN RETURNS:
Pianist Van Cliburn, Texas-born American youth who conquered and won Russia music-wise, returns from his triumph and is greeted upon arrival by his parents and many admirers.

TIM TAM TAKES PREAKNESS:
With Ismael Valenzuela guiding him – TIM TAM, reliable son of Tom Fool and Two Lea accomplishes the expected triumph in the rich ($133.950) Eighty-Second running of the Preakness. It’s Calumet’s Colors in the winner’s Circle again – as some 37,000 fans crowd the Pimlico track. Lincoln Road makes an excellent second place showing. Slow-poke Silky is heading back to California!

MIRACLE MILE – NO RECORD:
In the Los Angeles Coliseum Relays – 3 men who have bettered 4 minutes – race in the mile run. Lincoln, Tabori and Elliott. An added starter covers the first half at a scorching pace – clearing the way for Elliott to run the world’s second fastest mile, America’s fastest ever. But, according to the Judges, the record will not be recognized because of the pace-setting.
