NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1958 (UE58091)

GREAT LAKES FREIGHTER SINKS IN STORM – 33 LIVES LOST:
One of the worst of the Great Lakes’ savage, early-November storms rages for over 6 days – pounding to destruction a huge freighter. The 615 foot vessel breaks up and sinks. Only 2 of its 35 man crew are found alive by rescuers. It’s one of the worst shipping disasters ever on the Lakes.

NEHRU’S BIRTHDAY:
India’s Prime Minister Nehru celebrates a happy 69th Birthday with New Delhi youngsters. High point of the day, the presentation to the kids of a miniature railway, on which Nehru takes the first ride.

CHENNAULT HONORED:
The Air Force honors the late, great General Clair Chennault, leader of the Flying Tigers. The Lake Charles, Louisiana base is rededicated as Chennault Air Force Base, in ceremonies attended by members of his family.

MUSHROOM MINE:
In upstate New York, the world’s largest mushroom farm, in an abandoned limestone mine, harvests about 20 tons daily! A fabulous quantity of the featherweight fungi, in a fantabulous operation.

SUN AND SNOW:
For the benefit of youngsters of the sunny south who’ve never seen snow, Tampa imports tons of the flaky white stuff along with Norse ski champs and Eskimos, to stage a sensational Winter Carnival.

COLTS SHUT OUT BEARS – 17-0:
At Chicago, gridiron thrills in the play-for-pay League as the Colts romp to a 17-0 victory over the Bears, sparked by stand-in George Shaw’s stand-out passing, and Ameche’s hard-charging play.

WEST SHOWS UNITY IN BERLIN CRISIS:
As the Soviets relax the pressure in their latest threat to the Free Sector of Berlin, the unscheduled visit of Senator Hubert Humphrey reemphasizes the Western unity that helped stymie the Reds. The Democratic leader tells Berlin’s Mayor of world U.S. support for President Eisenhower’s stand fast policy.

PRINCESS GRACE AND PRINCE RAINIER:
The Rulers of Monaco arrive at Idlewild airport to begin a month’s visit. The purpose: to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with Grace’s parents. Theatre-going and Christmas shopping.

“CACTUS JACK” GARNER:
Vice-President during FDR’s first 2 terms, John Nance Garner celebrates his 90th birthday at Uvalde, Texas with a host of old friends, including President Harry S. Truman, Senator Lyndon Johnson, and Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn gathered ‘round.

POPE JOHN XXIII in ceremonial splendor is acclaimed by 160,000 Romans as he journeys across the city to take possession of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in his capacity as Bishop of Rome.

QUEEN FREDERIKA of Greece and her 20-year old daughter Princess Sophia of Greece preside over the Imperial Ball, held in Hollywood and attended by a galaxy of movieland’s royalty for the benefit of the International Adoption Agency, WAIF.

SPORTS

DARTMOUTH WINS IVY TITLE, downing Princeton, 21-12 in a hard-fought thriller at Tigertown. It’s Dartmouth’s first Ivy League title in 20 years, earned by the star play of John Crouthamel and Bill Gundy.

SYRACUSE EARNS BOWL BID, overcoming the scrappy Mountaineers of West Virginia in a see-saw spectacular at Morgantown, West Virginia. The game Mountaineers score as many touchdowns, but the Orange has the edge with successful conversions, to win 15-12.

VICE-PRESIDENT IN LONDON FOR DEDICATION:
Vice-President and Mrs. Richard Nixon make an unscheduled arrival in London, coming in by train after their plane is unable to land at fog-bound London airport. A good turnout of Londoners greets them despite the altered arrival. Mr. Nixon will participate in the dedication ceremonies of the new American Memorial Chapel of St. Paul’s Cathedral.

FORMOSA SUGAR CROP:
An Army of half a million, mostly women, pour into the cane fields of Formosa to harvest a $100 million dollar crop that makes Free China the world’s second-ranking producer of sugar.

AUTOS BURNED:
In New York City, where some 600 wrecked and abandoned autos a day are burned by the City. A new smokeless furnace goes into servie, with a special chamber to eliminate one source of air pollution.

COLTS TRAMPLE RAMS:
In Baltimore Memorial Stadium, the Colts run rampant against the Los Angeles Rams, sparked by Johnny Unitas’ return after 3 weeks on the sidelines. It’s a rout as the Baltimore pro gridders continue their headlong gallop towards the Western Division title.

25 YEARS AGO TODAY:
25 YEARS AGO TODAY – when aviators were heros and flying was an adventure, without the aid of electronic brains. Among the great names of the day: Charles A. Lindberg who, with Mrs. Lindbergh, earned the new fame pioneering commercial airways in an odyssey that took him across the Atlantic twice – flying over 4 continents. General Italo Balbo let his armada of 24 Italian seaplanes 6,100 miles to the Chicago World’s Fair, in one of the greatest of all mass flights. Other highlights: a steam-engined plane with a reversible propellor, an experimental helicopter setting a new record for height – 30 feet; and the 110 miles to the gallon motor scooter invented by a flier for commuting to and from the airport.

THREAT TO BERLIN:
Scenes from Free West Berlin, following Khrushchev’s six-month ultimatum to the Allied Powers. At the 4-power Kimmandatura, the Soviet flag no longer flies, but at Spandau Prison, where Nazi war criminals are still detained and the Allied Control Center, Moscow maintains its role in the occupation administration.

TOKYO LOVE STORY:
Japan celebrates in the streets as 1500 years of tradition topples with the announcement that Crown Prince Akihito will marry a commoner, the daughter of a Tokyo industrialist, after a tennis-court courtship. She’ll become the first Empress of Japan who was not chosen from a narrow circle of royal families.

UNSINKABLE LIFEBOAT:
A German engineer tests a new unsinkable life-boat, which looks a little like a baby whale, but shows it will survive the onslaught of storms – and even reaches surface safely after being dragged under by a sinking ships suction! A real test.

FOOTBALL:
AIR FORCE DOWNS COLORADO – The Air Force Falcons make the big-time as they come from behind to down the stampeding Colorado Buffalos, 20-14, with the aid of 6 fumbles and to clinch a Cotton Bowl bid.

ARMY SINKS NAVY – 22-6:
The Black Knights finish their first unbeaten season since 1949. After a fumble on the kick-off and a stunning Navy touchdown march – the Cadets get back on the track to torpedo the future Admirals.

MALIBU BLAZE:
After three days, Malibu’s raging forest and brush fire is still not completely under control. With 29 homes destroyed, and 18,000 acres scorched, the swank Hollywood film colony here is menaced. Lew Ayres’ $50,000 home is one of those gutted. 2,000 men battle the flames along a 42-mile front.

CHICAGO SCHOOL DISASTER:
One of the worst school fires in history! Scenes of the blazing Chicago Parochial School in which 87 children and 3 Nuns perished. Over 100, many severely burned lie in hospitals. A pall of grief blankets the city as firemen and police probe the disaster that shocked the nation.

FRENCH ELECTIONS:
France completes elections for the First National Assembly under Charles DeGaulle’s new Constitution. The result is an overwhelming vote of confidence for DeGaulle – as all opposition is smashed.

POPE JOHN XXIII receives Mohammed Reza Pahlevi, Shah of Persia, at the Vatican. A friendly meeting between the Moslem Chief of State and the Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

MIGHTY MITE:
The Marines put the “Mighty Mite”, their newest lightweight but rugged, jeep-type vehicle, through its paces as Quantico, Va. The 1700 pound car takes the roughest terrain with the greatest of ease.

MARCH OF DIMES:
Three poster children meet in New York to launch the National Foundation’s expanded 1959 Program – for “Victories Beyond Polio” – a war on the “3 Faces of Crippling” – Polio, Arthritic disease – and birth injuries.

RAILBIRDS BID BANGTAILS ADIEU:
Sorrowful scenes at a New York race track, as the Northern racing season ends on a rainy, dank day. The trotters are practically awash in this farewell performance. But – there’s a good turnout nonetheless.

WEST BERLIN VOTES FOR FREEDOM:
In the face of Khrushchev’s ultimatum, West Berlin’s regularly scheduled municipal elections become a plebiscite in which the free city, 110 miles behind the Iron Curtain, routs local Reds in a resounding declaration of staunch defiance.

MASS FUNERAL FOR FIRE VICTIMS IN CHICAGO:
Last rites are held for 27 of the 92 who perished in Chicago’s disastrous school fire. Cardinal Spellman presides at the Solemn Pontifical Requim Mass which is attended by 6,100 persons.

ISRAEL-SYRIA BORDER CLASH:
Israeli border communities along an 11-mile sector are blasted by Syrian artillery. The Soviet-made guns hurl 300 shells, in the worst Arab-Israeli border incident in months.

GLAMOROUS GRANDMAS:
Why, Grandma! What a svelte figure you have. In a British contest for Glamorous Grandmothers, some big, bad, wolf-bait decorates the stage! Shades of Red Riding Hood.

ROYAL LOVEBIRDS:
Tennis-courting again are Japan’s Prince Akihito and his commoner fiancée, Michiko Shoda, playing mixed doubles at the scene where the Prince met and wooed his bride-to-be.

IMPERIAL BALL:
Guests of honor at the East Coast edition of the Imperial Ball – for sweet Charity, are Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. The gala evening is marred when a royal toe is trampled!

SPORTS:
In Chicago, hardy barriers set off on the 10,000 meter course for the National AAU cross-country Championship in near-zero weather. Knit caps, ear-muffs and long U-wear make unique track suits.

NORFOLK PLANE CRASH:
At Norfolk, Va., a Navy aerial tanker plane crashes in a residential neighborhood, demolishing two homes. A Navy man’s wife – two infants and the plane’s 4 crewmen are killed.

SEVEN FEET OF SNOW:
Oswego, New York, is snarled by a four-day snow fall. Four days that seem like eternity – while nearly seven feet of snow pounds the city in 20 foot drifts. Homes and stores collapse under the impact of the storm which halted all avenues of life in this town.

REGULUS II TESTED:
Off Point Mugu, California, the Navy test-fires its new Regulus II guided missile weapons system, from the deck of a ship modified to duplicate that of the latest nuclear guided-missile submarine.

25 YEARS AGO TODAY:
Then – as now, people were turning out en masse for the BIG events. Among the crowd-pulling sports highlights of 1933, on the TURF, Equipoise, winning the Hawthorn Gold Cup; the Boston Marathon with a newcomer scoring an upset victory over Clarence DeMar, even then a veteran! Denny Shute and John Goodman, battled on the greens for the mythical “World’s Championship of Golfdom”; Baseball’s Most Valuable Player was Carl Hubbell, who pitched the N.Y. Giants to the World Series; in the Rose Bowl, a Howard Jones – coached USC power-house mauled the Pitt Panthers – 35-0. Lowis Meyer roared to victory 104 mph. And in the prize ring, heavyweight champ Primo Carnera mixed it up with Jo-Jo, King of Australia’s fighting kangaroos.

BIG THREE IN ACCORD AT PARIS:
Meeting in Paris, preliminary to the annual NATO sessions, the Big 3 Foreign Ministers confer with West Germany’s Brentano taking part. They reach agreement on the basic issues raised by Soviet Russia’s ultimatum on West Berlin. The Free Nations stand united.

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER:
In Oslo, Norway, Father Pire, the Belgian priest who won the 1958 Nobel Peace Prize for his work aiding displaced persons, receives the $41,000 award.

PARAKEET CIRCUS:
In Holland, a parakeet circus with almost as much action as a human ‘big top’, including high wire walkers and daredevil motorcyclists!! It’s a real bird of a show.

POLISH HOOP-DE-DO:
Polish teenagers abandon the national polka and mazurkas, for mass hoop-twirling sessions set to American-style jazz.

SEASON’S GREETINGS FROM EMBASSY TOTS:
In the nation’s capital, one of the most delightful traditions of the holiday season is observed as the youngsters of the Washington diplomatic corps assemble for a program of Season’s Greetings to the nation.

SPORTS:
In Yankee Stadium, the New York grid Giants meet the Cleveland Browns. A tie will clinch the division crown for the Browns. They lead 10-3 in the fourth period. A giant TD isn’t enough – it only ties the score. But as time runs out, Summerall splits the uprights with a 49-yard field goal to win the game and assure the New Yorkers of a Play-Off berth.

“THOR” FIRING OPENS NEW MISSILE CENTER:
First films of the Air Force’s new missile center, Vandenberg Air Force Base. With ultra-modern automatic equipment for handling giant missiles and readying them for firing, the great new base with its vast firing range over the Pacific offers vastly expanded facilities for training missile-men.

FLOATING PLATFORM finds the Golden Gate is a low bridge. The giant platform, with towers nearly 275 feet high, has to be lowered some 54 feet into the water before it can clear the majestic span.

NEW CARDINALS:
Archbishops Cushing of Boston and O’Hara of Philadelphia are among the prelates elevated to Cardinals in Rome as Pope John XXIII expands the Sacred College of Cardinals to full strength and beyond.

BOY OF THE YEAR:
Lindley Ruddick, 16, of Seymour, Indiana, is congratulated by President Eisenhower at the White House, on his selection as “Boy of the Year” by the half million members of Boys’ Clubs of America.

RECORD AIR LIFT:
At Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, an Air Force Cargo-Master propjet transport carries a 59-ton payload to an altitude of 10,000 feet. By far the most massive cargo ever lifted off the ground.

NEW ICE STAR:
On the rink at Garmish, films of charming Marika Kilius, West German skating star being groomed for the Olympics and for international fame. Marik does a dance specially for the camera.

DONS vs. WILDCATS:
Opening the University of San Francisco’s new Memorial Gym the Dons tangle with the Kansas State Wildcats. It’s a tense battle with a frantic scoring scramble in the final seconds as the Wildcats squeeze through the win by one point!

SKI-JUMP SEASON:
The Bear Mountain, N.Y., ski jumping season opens with the Norway Ski Club event, and the temperature pushing zero. Veterans Art Takle and Art Devlin are ousted from top honors by newcomer Einar Dohlen, with a spectacular leap in slick style.

ATLAS IN ORBIT/RADIO’S PRESIDENT EISENHOWER’S MESSAGE OF PEACE TO THE WORLD:
Launched from Cape Canaveral, a giant Atlas ICBM soars aloft to bring U.S. scientists bountiful prestige. It is the largest satellite yet evolved – with its 8800 lb. bulk and the first one ever self-guided into orbit. The amazing Atlas broadcasts a tape recording by the President. A good-will message to the world in the pioneering testing of an incredible new space communications system.

TORO TERRORIZES TORERO:
At a charity bullfight event in Madrid, El Toro throws away the script in his appearance against Dominguin. He is one of Espana’s great matadors and an unorthodox rough-house performance is given.

GIANTS SHUT OUT BROWNS – 10-0:
At Yankee Stadium, the N.Y. Giants play unbeatable pro football against the Browns in the Playoff for the Eastern grid Championship. As the line holds Cleveland powerless, Triplett, Gifford and Conerly click in a razzle-dazzle double-reverse touchdown play, followed by Summerall’s field goal, for more than enough to win.
