NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1967 (UE67092)

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
During a two-day nationwide tour of military bases, President Johnson praises the "courage and conviction" of his fighting men and issues an invitation to meet Hanoi's leaders, "anytime, anywhere" even on "a neutral ship on a neutral sea."

SATURN FIVE
Saturn Five lifts an Apollo spacecraft into an 81/2-orbital flight from Cape Kennedy, splashing down in the Pacific. It renews hope that American astronauts will be on the moon by 1969. The giant rocket's lift-off makes Cape Kennedy tremble with reverberations.

PLANE 'CHUTE
A huge parachute floats a disabled light plane to earth without damage in the first demonstration of its kind. Future use is seen for large airliners, disabled in flight.

JACKIE
Mrs. John F. Kennedy fulfills a childhood dream by feeding the Royal Elephants of Cambodia. Her 9-day visit to Thailand and Cambodia includes a wide tour of exotic landmarks.

BABY SHOP
A "Baby Dior" fashion shop opens in Paris and Princess Grace does the ribbon-cutting. The shop outfits infants-to-school-age kids in the nattiest napery in town!

FASHIONS
Rudi Gernriech's Spring line includes see-through, plastic-striped knits, pantaloon-skirted suits, and daringly cut-out bathing suits as well as teeny-weenie bikinis.

RACE
"Fort Marcy" noses out top money-winner, "Damascus" to win the "Washington, D. C. International," making it a one-two finish for U.S. horses in an international field of starters.

SATO-LYNDON B. JOHNSON
While hundreds of demonstrating left-wing students are arrested and injured in Tokyo, Prime Minister Sato departs for Washington. After talks with President Johnson, it's agreed the Bonin Islands will be returned to Japan while the Ryukyu group, including Okinawa, will be retained.

RESCUE
New river-to-air rescue technique in Vietnam is demonstrated as hovering helicopter plucks wounded man in litter from deck of speeding patrol boat, thus saving precious minutes.

NEW BOMBER
The U.S. Air Force adds the A-Thirty-Seven jet bomber to its air power in Vietnam. At high:_ or low speeds, it carries light-to-medium bombs, special armament, and a 7imu "mini-gun."

POPEYE
Popeye, the Sailor, beloved balloon and star of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the past ten years, is retired from service due to wear and tear. A retirement party is held in Central Park.

SACRED COWS
India's annual "Festival of The Sacred Cows" includes the feeding, decorating, washing, and worshipping of cows. It's also a public festival and the faithful celebrate at the fairgrounds.

CUSTOM CARS
The National Hot Rod and Custom Car Show in New York displays some weird and flashy vehicles like the "Boot Hill Express," a lop-sided hearse, and the "Cosmo-Ray"....yours for $30,000!

CAR RACE
Vintage cars make a 50-mile run from London to Brighton to the cheers of thousands. The winner: a 1901 Panhard whose 73-year old driver was only seven when it was first built!

CROSS-COUNTRY
36 hundred runners jostle and jounce over 41/2 miles around Brussels in their annual cross-country race. Britisher Mal Batty wins but the two-legged traffic jam at the start is unbelievable.

FOOTBALL
Oregon State upsets Southern California, 3-0, on the toe of Mike Haggard's field goal. It's their third upset this year and it drops the Trojans from number one national ranking snapping an 8-game winning streak.

VIETNAM
Heavy Vietcong mortar attacks devastate the American base at Dakto. In three weeks of bitter fighting almost 200 Americans are lost while close to 1,000 of the enemy are killed.

MISS WORLD 21-year old "Miss Peru," Madeleine Hartog-Bell, wins the title "Miss World" in London. Her prizes included $7,000 and a year's contract. She is the daughter of a Peruvian rancher.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY
At a Detroit press conference, Michigan's Governor George Romney announces his candidacy for the '68 Republican Presidential nomination. He's the first announced Republican candidate.

LYNDON B. JOHNSON-MEDAL
Army Sgt. Charles Morris is awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam. The White House ceremony is attended by President Johnson and Vietnam Commander General Westmoreland.

MURALS
Priceless Holbein murals are discovered on the walls of a 1,000-year-old church in West Germany. Painstakingly being restored, they represent one of the greatest art finds of the century.

LYNDA'S SHOWER
Lynda Bird Johnson is given a bridal shower at the home of Defense Secretary Robert McNamara. Only her closest friends attend. She'll be wed to Marine Captain Chuck Robb on December 17th.

INDIA'S PILGRIMS
The 8-day bathing festival on the River Ganges brings more than a million Hindu pilgrims to the annual celebration. A dip in the water means purification and salvation and is also a thanksgiving for bumper crops.

FOOTBALL
Southern Cal becomes Pacific Coast champs and are Rose Bowl-bound after their 21-20 victory over UCLA. Trojan back O.J. Simpson scores the winning T.D. on a 64-yard run. Bruin quarterback Gary Beban is brilliant in defeat throwing two touchdown passes, as he duels with Simpson for Heisman Trophy honors.

VIETNAM
Jet bombing strikes, heavy artillery fire, and advancing paratroopers finally take Hill 875 after 3 days of some of the most furious fighting of the Vietnam War.

DEVALUATION
Britain devalues the pound from $2.80 to $2.40 and the move sets off worldwide economic waves. Stocks dip sharply then make a strong recovery and U.S. bank interest rates rise to defend the value of the dollar.

EYE RESEARCH AWARD
Doctors Gerd Meyer-Schwickerath of West Germany and Charles Stephens of Boston share the $25,000 Research to Prevent Blindness Trustees Award. Both men pioneered in the treatment of damaged and diseased retinas. MCA Board Chairman Jules Stein, former eye specialist, presides at the award ceremony.

POPE PAUL
Pope Paul makes his first public appearance since surgery on the balcony over Saint Peter's square. 25,000 hear him give thanks and bless the vast throng.

BOMB
A crude, homemade bomb is discovered outside the U.S. mission to the United Nations in New York. Police bomb squad members remove it from the flowerbed and dismantle it inside a special, bomb-proof truck.

CENSUS
While President Johnson speaks at the Department Of Commerce building, census clocks indicate that our nation now has a population of two hundred-million.

JETS-PATRIOTS
The Jets manage to hold off a fourth quarter fired-up Patriots squad, winning 29-24. Namath throws two touchdown passes while new Boston quarterback, Don Trull throws one and runs two, all in the final period.

GIANTS-STEELERS
The New York Giants beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 28-20, but lose the services of star fullback Tucker Frederickson for the rest of the season. Tarkenton throws two T.D. passes for the Giants while Steeler quarterback Nelson also hits for two.

CYPRUS
Greece and Turkey, poised for war over Cyprus, are both calmed by the intervention of world diplomacy. Talks in Athens and Ankara help to avert war, U.S., British, and U.N. families were evacuated from Cyprus as a precaution.

VIETNAM
The battle for Dakto is the longest, and bloodiest, single campaign of the Vietnam War. More than 1600 enemy dead and 285 American lives testify to its ferocity. Artillery and mortars pound enemy positions and block escape routes.

ROCKETS
In Yugoslavia, rockets shoot mail over the mountain into rural villages. The demonstration interests Post Office officials and space scientists. One big problem: the cost.

WHITE LION
A rare, all-white lion cub is born in Florida and the experts pronounce him a "zoological rarity." He's kept in the lap of luxury, incubator and all, at a local hospital.

HARVARD-YALE
Yale beats Harvard, 24-20, in the last two minutes of the game on a 66-yard Dowling-to-Marting pass. Yale is Ivy League and Big Three Champ but Harvard's determined play late in the game made them scramble for the win.

INDIANA-PURDUE
Indiana upsets Purdue, 19-14, to win a trip to the Rose Bowl, a share of the Big Ten Title, and the "Old Oaken Bucket," Terry Cole scores on a 63-yard run and sets up another on a 42-yard dash.

POISONED BREAD
77 die, hundreds are stricken after eating poisoned bread in the Colombian city of Chiquinquira. Most of the dead are children below 17. A local bakery made the bread, not knowing the flour has been contaminated by pesticide which leaked in shipment.

HARRIMAN
U.S. Roving Ambassador Averell Harriman and his daughter meet Yugoslavia President and Mrs. Tito. Later, diplomatic talks center on Vietnam, the Middle East and Cyprus.

MOBUTU
Congolese President Joseph Mobutu celebrates the second anniversary of his seizure of power with a military parade. He reviews troops, civilian groups, and a line of armored vehicles.

SAFETY DEVICE
The newest thing in airport safety, a nylon net to bring huge jets to a slow stop without passenger injury, is demonstrated. U.S. Carriers off Vietnam use a similar system.

GO-GO QUEEN
The title of "Miss Go-Go America" is on the line as a group of girls try to wriggle their way to fame. The winner is Nicki Picard of Pittsburgh, whose happy...but tired!

BOAT RACE
22-year old Mike Reagan, son of California's Governor Ronald Reagan, wins the grueling outboard motorboat marathon on the Colorado River. He wins $9,000 after two days and eight hours.

SKI-JUMPING
An Olympic preview in the first ski-jump event of the season in Norway. Norwegian two-time world champ, Bjorn Wirkola, has a bad day, finishing 27th. Surprise winner is little-known Bent Totum of Norway who soars 179 feet.

FOOTBALL
The Green Bay Packers clinch the NFL's Central Division title with a 17-13 win over the second-place Chicago Bears. Bart Starr passes and Denny Anderson plunges for two Packer TD's.

CARDINAL SPELLMAN
Francis Cardinal Spellman, 78, dies of a sudden stroke. As Vicar General of the U.S. Armed Forces, he spent Christmas with the troops for the past 16 years, All 7 American Cardinals will attend his funeral- Pope Paul and world leaders express their sympathy.

FIRE
The main mail-exchange building in Melbourne, Australia, is swept by fire. Two thousand employees flee the burning building, two are rescued from the roof. A million dollars in damage is done by the flames.

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
President Johnson frolics with his 5-month-old grandson, Patrick Lyndon Nugent, in the Chief Executive's White House office. The youngster is the son of the President's daughter, Luci, and her husband, Pat Nugent, and he loves to visit Grandpa.

FOG
Experimental simulating landings on a test-flight machine at the University of California, help develop new runway lights for safer landings at airports covered by fog.

HELICOPTER
A giant "Skycrane" helicopter lifts a 5-ton section of ski-lodge, transporting it from trailer truck to mountainside foundation in a matter of minutes. It's one of the biggest air lifts of its kind.

TIGHTROPE
French tightrope-walker Henri Rochatein attempts a tightrope balancing endurance records, cramped on a wire 360 feet over a lake, where he plans to stay for two weeks!

FASHIONS
Latest ski fashions for "snow bunnies" are shown and they include jumpsuits, stretch suits, and quilted racing jackets. For going to and from: a calfskin poncho.

ARMY-NAVY
Underdog Navy upsets Army, 19-14, in their traditional inter-Service battle in Philadelphia's Kennedy Stadium. Brilliant passing by Navy quarterback John Cartwright plus tight pass defense gains the win. Army's sophomore quarterback Jim O'Toole leads a Cadet fourth-quarter drive for two T.D.'s but it's too little, too late.

CARDINAL SPELLMAN'S FUNERAL
Nine Cardinals, nineteen Bishops, President Johnson, Vice-President Humphrey, hundreds of other dignitaries, both church and lay officials, and thousands of mourners of all faiths jam Saint Patrick's Cathedral for the funeral of Francis Cardinal Spellman. Following a Pontifical Mass, his body is interred in a crypt with his six predecessors, beneath the Cathedral's main altar.

BRIDGE
At least 35 construction workers are killed in the collapse of a bridge in Mexico. The search for victims is hampered by tons of concrete and twisted steel. The bridge gave way without warning and plunged 350 feet into a deep gorge.

FLOODS Millions in damage, and thousands homeless as angry seas pound coastal areas of Puerto Rico, not far from San Juan, The entire region is declared a disaster area. More than 300 homes are reduced to kindling.

BROWNS-GIANTS
The Cleveland Browns top the New York Giants, 24-14, to draw one step closer to the Century Division Championship in the NFL. An intercepted Giant pass for a 79-yard T.D. is the game's turning point.

COLTS-COWBOYS
In a real squeaker, the Baltimore Colts squeeze by the Dallas Cowboys, 23-17, with Lenny Moore scoring the deciding T.D. with only 90 seconds to go. The Colts remain the only unbeaten team in the NFL.

RAIDERS-CHARGERS Oakland beats San Diego, 41-21, and takes firm hold on first place in the AFL's Western Division. Raider quarterback Daryle Lamonica throws four T.D. passes.

LYNDA'S WEDDING
President Johnson's eldest daughter, Lynda, is married to Marine Corps Captain Charles Robb in the East Room of the White House. It's the first White House wedding in 53 years. Both splendor and poignancy mark the occasion. Within four months, Capt. Robb will begin duty in Vietnam.

QUEEN MARY
The luxury liner Queen Mary is welcomed to her final home, Long Beach, California, after her final voyage, a 40-day trip from Southampton around Cape Horn. She'll be a permanent museum and convention facility.

HEART
The world's first heart transplant patient, Louis Washkansky, continues to improve while his surgeon announces plans for a second transplant operation within weeks.

HORSE
New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art announces its ancient Greek bronze horse, valued at $250,000, is a fake. Gamma ray shadowgraphs show an inner construction which is modern in technique.

POPE PAUL
Pope Paul ventures beyond the Vatican for the first time since his recent surgery. He joins with thousands of pilgrims on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in the Piazza di Spagna and gives the crowd his Papal blessing.

TRAIN
France's new "aero-train" sets a world record for trains, hitting 233 mph. It rides on a cushion of air while straddling a concrete track and will be in operation by the mid-70's.

BEBAN-HEISMAN
Gary Beban, UCLA's quarterback for the past three years, is this year's Heisman Trophy winner. Collegiate football's most coveted award goes to the athlete who helped rack up a 3-year record of 23 wins and only 5 losses. His future in pro football may be with Minnesota.

RAMS-PACKERS
A blocked punt is the turning point as the Rams squeeze by the Packers, 27-24, to keep their title hopes alive. The winning T.D., a Gabriel-to-Cassey end zone pass, comes with only 34 seconds to go.
