Desert Victory: Reel-1
Views of the western desert where the North African Campaign was fought in WWII, hot days and bitter cold nights. Soldiers of 8th Army sleeping bundled up in blankets. Huge sand storm cloud in the distance. German forces under the Command of Rommel continue to push back the British 8th Army toward El Alamein and Alexandria. Shows German half-tracks, tanks, planes, Rommel in Scout Car advancing. Low aerial view of Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez. Using the natural terrain defenses of the Quattara Depression and the Mediterranean Sea British Field Marshall Auchinleck had his troops dig in, lay protective mines, build gun emplacements, and waited.
German artillery and German planes attacked the British 8th Army. Winston Churchill visits the 8th Army with news of re-enforcements and gave command of the British 8th Army to General Montgomery. British wartime factories, and women working in defense plants and factories. In the United States the Sherman tank with it's 75 MM gun was coming off assembly lines. Shows large tank manufacturing defense plant. Shows RAF Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft being removed from shipping crates in Nigeria. The Hurricanes are re-assembled. Shows Hurricane fighter taking-off from newly constructed airfield after assembly and in-flight to provide air support to British Eighth Army.

Rommel looking through field glasses toward front lines of British 8th Army at El Alamein.. Shows burning and destroyed German tanks, artillery pieces, bodies of dead German soldiers after five days of fighting. Desert Victory: Reel-3
British 8th Army faces Rommel's German Army at El Alamein. General Montgomery discussing battle plan with his officers that relayed the plan down through the ranks so each soldier knew the objective. Final preparations for the second battle of El Alamein, code name Operation Lightfoot. Bombs loaded on planes, shells onto the new S tanks, belts of ammunition on fighter planes. Shows soldiers enjoying a brief period of quite desert life listening to soldier playing a tune on Scottish bagpipe. Shows the sappers or combat engineers preparing to move forward to clear mine fields to be marked by white tape.
The second battle of El Alamein begin in the evening with orders for all artillery batteries to "fire". Flashes of artillery fire at night. Sappers move forward to clear paths through the German mine fields. German mine located and dug up. White marker tape marks path cleared of mines. Soldier is shot, another soldier quickly takes his place. Infantry fix bayonets to rifles and move up. Silhouettes of soldiers moving into battle, bagpipe player marches into battle with soldiers, soldiers overrun and capture German soldiers.

Shows battlefield scenes after first night of battle in the second battle of El Alamein. Shows British 8th infantry, planes, and tanks working as one pushing Rommel's Germany Army back. Image of the Big Ben clock tower in London. Shows British women war workers cheering as BBC announces the Axis forces in the western desert is in full retreat after 12-days and nights of fighting. Shows destroyed and captured German equipment and aircraft as the Allied forces continued to pursue the retreating German Army in the western desert. Shows capture of five Italian Divisions in the south and thousands of Germans captured in the north including Commander of the Afrika Korp, Leader of the German Parachute Unit.
Shows planes strafing and bombing retreating German forces. Advance was slowed first by rain and then mines and other road obstructions placed by the Germans. Allied Forces reach and re-occupy Tobruk. Allied Forces enter Bengasi. Scenes of damage and sunken ships in harbor at Bengasi Libya. Montgomery and his 8th Army fighting on the outskirts of Tripoli, Montgomery accepts surrender of Tripoli. Military parade, Montgomery rides standing in open car, British flag is raised, Churchill salutes as 8th Army soldiers pass in review.
