New Aircraft Carrier USS Essex CV-9 Is Launched
The USS Essex (CV-9), the first in the Navy's fleet of new aircraft carriers is launched at Newport News, Virginia July 31, 1942. Shows traditional ship christening by breaking a bottle of wine against the bow of the ship by Mrs. Artemus L. Gates, wife of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air.

Nazi German spies are tried in the a court room in the U.S. Department of Justice charged with espionage, sabotage, and treason. Shows FBI agents digging up boxes of explosives and incendiary devices buried in the sand on America's Atlantic shore by the German spies who landed from a submarine.
