Allies Fight To Liberate The Scheldt

The Battle of the Scheldt was a series of military operations by the Canadian First Army consisting of Canadians, British and Polish troops. It was necessary to clear both banks of the Scheldt estuary in order to open the Port of Antwerp. British troops moving in to clear Tilburg; Dutch people of Tilburg warming greeting the liberating British soldiers. Shows Bren gun carriers moving along railroad tracks toward Hertogenbosch in the southern Netherlands. British troops cross canal in small boat under cover of machine gun fire from a Churchill tank firing from a wooed area. Hertogenbosch is captured after intense battle. Shows capture of German soldiers and a capture of a complete German Red Cross unit consisting of several vehicles.

Operation Infatuate was the code name for the invasion of the German held Dutch Island of Walcheren at the mouth of the Scheldt. Walcheren Island was pounded by Allied bombers that destroyed the German coastal guns. Shows bombardment of Walcheren by long range artillery guns firing opposite of Flushing (Vlissingen). Troops of the British 4th Special Service Brigade (Royal Marines) in LTVs (Buffaloes) shoving off for an amphibious assault on Walcheren Island at Westkapelle . Dive bombers spearhead the attack.

At Flushing (Vlissingen) the retreating Germans damaged the harbor. No. 4 Commando Unit of the British 4th Special Service Brigade (Royal Marines) and 155th Infantry BDE walking through the mud flats at Flushing (Walcheren Island) to reach solid ground. Intense fighting and capture of the village of Flushing on Walcheren Island. Shows captured German POWs.

Dive bombers and rocket ships attack the village of Westkapelle on Walcheren Island. British Royal Marine capture Westkapelle and with the other Canadian troops, ended the Battle of the Scheldt.
