Aircraft Carrier Franklin Survives Savage Japanese Attack

Aerial view of two F4U Corsair fighter planes in flight with the carrier USS Franklin in BG. Scenes of the attack by Japanese dive bombers on the Aircraft Carrier USS Franklin (CV-13), nicknamed "Big Ben", off the coast of Japan in 1945. Japanese plane is hit by AA fire, loses wing, cartwheels flaming into sea.

Explosion as the USS Franklin is hit by two bombs mid-ship. Crew fighting the fires and working feverishly to save the carrier from sinking. Shows more explosions and more wounded. CU as Chaplain Father Joseph T. O'Callahan ministers to an injured man aboard USS Franklin. Transfer of wounded in stretchers from the Franklin to other ships.

With the USS Franklin dead in the water and with a dangerous list to port, sailors jump from the gun tubs of the Franklin and are quickly rescued. Under her own power the USS Franklin heads across the Pacific. Chaplain Father Joseph T. O'Callahan holds religious services after the USS Franklin gets underway. Entering the Panama Canal the wounded receive combat decorations. Shows the damaged USS Franklin entering New York Harbor, Statue of Liberty in BG.

German U-Boats Surrender At Atlantic Port

As part of the surrender agreement, German submarines begin surfacing and surrendering to Allied Forces. Scene of Blimp over German submarine, barrel of ship's gun in left frame. Shows the German U-boat U-858 off Cape May, New Jersey. Members of an American prize crew on deck of U-858 searching German U-boat crew. German submarine crew destined for POW Camp. Another German undersea raider (submarine) surrendering. Submarine crew disembarking under armed guard.

German High Command Sign Surrender Document In Berlin

Allied officers in the shattered City of Berlin German. First pictures show the crumbled ruins of Berlin. The ruins of Hitler's Reich Chancellery in Berlin, the nerve center of the Nazi Regime. The Hotel Adlon and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. At Tegel Airport, Air Marshall Tedder, American General Carl Spaatz meets Russian Delegation for ratification of Germany's unconditional surrender.

German General Keitel and General Jodl surrender to General Spaatz and Russian Marshall Zhukov at Berlin. A German school building is the scene of the ratification. German officials sign surrender papers in Berlin along with American, British and Russian signatories officially ending the War In Europe.
