United Nations Security Conference In San Francisco
At San Francisco the United Nations Security conference on world security organization moves ahead. Georges Bidault of France addresses the conference. U.S. Secretary of State Stettinius presides.
War Ends In Europe - Germany Surrenders
Throngs of people celebrate (hails) the end of World War II (WWII) in Europe. Scenes of Times Square in New York City as America joins in the celebration of VE Day (victory in Europe). Shows man waving from Times Square street sign pole. People in church gives thanks to God for victory.
President Truman announces the surrender of Germany. U.S. and Russian troops (Soviet Forces) meet at the River Elbe. Shows American General E.R. Reinhardt and Russian General Zhukov. In Italy, German representative signs surrender documents giving up all German troops in Italy.
LS, Main Grandstands in the Luitpold Arena (Luitpoldarena) of the Nazi Party rally grounds in Nuremberg, Germany. The Main Grandstands is commonly referred to as the "Nuremberg Stadium". CU of German Swastika on top of the Main Grandstands. An American flag is raised to cover the German Swastika on top of the Main Grandstands. Shows explosion as the Nazi Party Swastika emblem on top of the "Nuremberg Stadium" is destroyed.
War Continues In The Pacific
War in the Pacific. American artillery, tanks, and troops with flamethrowers destroy Japanese positions on Okinawa. Only 360 miles from Japan Okinawa was consider part of the Japanese homeland. Shows the Ryukyuan people on Okinawa fleeing to the 10th Army lines. American wounded is loaded on planes to be flown to hospitals on distant islands. Explosive charges are used to flush Japanese soldiers from caves. Japanese soldier flushed from cave is shot as another Japanese soldier surrenders.
The American naval ships of the Okinawa invasion fleet is attacked by Japanese Kamikaze planes. Scenes of Japanese Kamikaze planes crashing into the sea. Scene of an American plane landing on aircraft carrier. American plane crash-lands in the sea, shows pilot on wing of plane.
