Family life in 1939 in a steel mill town. Scenes of a steel mill and industrial pollution of the air as factory smokestacks spew and belch smoke and pollutants into the atmosphere that envelops the surrounding neighborhood. Shows the run down, dilapidated row housing of the blue-collar workers, their wives, and children. Numerous scenes of children playing on the board walkways connecting the houses and on the nearby railroad tracks.
Shows little boy going to an outhouse (type of toilet structure) as a woman hangs out clothes on a clothes line to dry. Man fills bucket with water at hand pump. Man washes face and hands using a wash basin or wash bowl. Woman adds coal to cooking stove. Shows smoke coming from home chimney. Shows smoke from train and other sources.
Scenes and charter of the film changes to the overcrowding, the inhuman pace, the lack of space and noise pollution for big city dwellers, in this case New York City in the late 1930's. Crowded sidewalks, traffic congestion, high rise buildings, white collar workers, and the hustle and bustle of New York City. People on the move, women typing letters, high rise apartment buildings, sign reads “Danger Congested Area”, pedestrian injured, kids hanging on back of moving truck, children playing in the alleys and streets, a Queens taxi backs into parked vehicle knocking bumper off, boy hits ball with bat, ball breaks window.
