Image of prospector and burro. Alluvial deposits are worked by hydraulic mining and dredging. Shows large dredge at work. Most of the world's gold is obtained by "quartz mining". Panning view of large gold quartz mining operation. Miners are lowered into mine by work elevator. Shows miners in mine tunnel. Gold-bearing quartz is crushed at the stamp mill. Ore train in underground mine. Tube mills grind ore to a fine "slush", "shimmey" tables shake out the heavy metal. Gold remaining in the slush is dissolved. The precipitated gold is filtered from the solution.
The gold is refined by smelting. Shaping gold. Gold crowns are made for dental use. Gold may be drawn into wire. Gold is used to make jewelry. Gold may be beaten into thin sheets. The last beating is done between sheets of "gold-beater's skin". Gold coinage. Gold has high value in small bulk. Gold coins are made by the government. Machines cut out coin blanks. A single operation stamps the coin on both sides. The finished coins are counted by weight.
