Dresden Nuclear Power Plant

The Dresden nuclear power generating station is under construction in Grundy County, Illinois, at the head of the Illinois River, near Morris, Illinois. In Camden, New Jersey workers at the New York Shipbuilding Company prepare the reactor pressure vessel for shipment to the Dresden construction site. Shows the upper head reactor cover and the reactor pressure vessel loaded on a barge and started down the Delaware River, through 1300 miles of inland waterway, through the Gulf of Mexico, up the Mississippi River, and through the locks of the Illinois River to the Dresden site. Shows the primary steam drum arriving on site by tractor-trailer. Shows arrival of other components to construction site.

Shows construction engineers at work inside the steam turbine building. Panning view of the control panels in main control room. In the fuel storage building fuel elements are removed from special designed shipping drums. Shows workmen in the reactor enclosure dome erecting the reactor pressure vessel. The last construction entrance to the enclosure dome is welded into place. Outside view of the enclosure dome and turbine building at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station housing utilizing General Electric BWR-3 boiling water reactors to produce the steam to drive the turbine powered generators that will produce electrical power for over one million average American homes.
