The U.S. successfully launches Commander Alan B. Shepard in a sub-orbital flight in Freedom 7 spacecraft. Scenes of a helicopter hoisting Alan B. Shepard onboard at the end of his sub-orbital Mercury-Redstone 3 (MR-3) flight May 5, 1961.
Shows lift-off of Captain Grissom in Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft on July 21, 1961 for another sub-orbital flight in which his space capsule, Liberty Bell 7 is lost at sea.
East Germany Begins The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall becomes the line of demarcation between East Berlin and West Berlin as the Communists build their Wall of Hate. Hastily barricades of brick and barbed wire are thrown up by East Germany as German civilians continue to run across 'No Man's Land' to West Germany. Scenes of family members in East Berlin waves to family that was able to escape to West Berlin.
