Yesterday's Big Story 1935 - French Luxury Liner Normandie
The great new French luxury liner SS Normandie arrives in New York on her maiden voyage on June 3, 1935 setting a new trans-Atlantic record. It’s the gala debut of an ill-starred vessel. Four years later war broke out and she was tied up in New York. Later, the Navy began to convert her to a transport and she caught fire. Despite heroic efforts of New York City firemen, she capsized at the pier. Salvage efforts were begun to put the vessel back into service as troop transport. However, the need did not warrant the expense and the great Sea Queen was towed to the scrap heap, a tragic saga at an end.
