The Selma Story And Civil Rights
President Lyndon Johnson seeks end to civil rights strife. President Johnson addresses a joint session of Congress to push a voting rights bill aimed at ending discrimination and civil strife. Various scenes of the Joint Session of Congress.
Scenes of whites and blacks march for civil rights in Harlem carrying banners that read "We March With Selma" and "We Shall Overcome".
Brown Chapel A.M.E Church becomes the headquarters for the Black drive for the right to vote. It is from here Martin Luther King leads the marchers on a march intended to reach Montgomery, the Capitol of Alabama. After crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge the marchers were confronted by a cordon of police and told to turn back. After several tense minutes Dr. King requested a moment to pray which was granted. After kneeling in prayer, the marchers rose and marched back toward Selma, Alabama. This was a turning point in the civil rights movement. Racial discrimination, integration, racial strife, civil rights for blacks, civil rights marchers, African-Americans.
