Crisis In Congo Reaches New Peak
The Soviet Union seizes upon the slaying of deposed Congolese Premier Patrice Lumumba as pretext for its most massive political attack on the UN.
Scenes trace the stormy career of Lumumba from his coming to power to his capture by strong-man Mobutu. Following his death, well-organized demonstrations in Moscow, New York, and most of the world’s major cities are accompanied by demands that U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold resign, and that all U.N. troops be pulled out of the Congo.
Debate in the Security Council is interrupted by a violent demonstration in the galleries, during U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson’s defense against what he calls a Soviet Declaration of War against the world organization.
