President Dwight D. Eisenhower Re-Elected In Landslide
President Dwight D. Eisenhower is re-elected to another 4 year term, defeating Democratic rival Adlai Stevenson by a landslide majority. As Ike carries 41 states with a greater popular vote than in 1952, Democrats retain control of House and Senate. Scenes show voting across the nation with Mr. Stevenson conceding defeat, and Ike's speech of acceptance.
Hungarian Revolt Against Red Oppression As Thousands Flee
Hungary continues fight against Red oppression. Actual scenes of Hungarian patriots battling Red (Soviet) tanks in Budapest, sniping from doors and windows against Russian armored might in a gallant, hopeless fight. Soviet flags and books are burned in a last defiant gesture. Meanwhile, the last of thousands of refugees cross the frontier into Austria, just before Russian tanks move up to seal the border with grim finality.
Hiroshima Maidens Survivors Of The Atom Bomb Return Home
The last group of Japanese girls who survived the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima, Japan depart from San Francisco after a year and a half of plastic surgery in this country to remove radiation scars. These women known as "Hiroshima Maidens" were referred to as "hibakusha", meaning "explosion-affected people". Keloid scars marred their faces.
Santa Claus Uses Flying Saucer In Holiday Parade
In Allentown, Pa., Santa Claus makes his first 1956 appearance in a Flying Saucer to the cheers of thousands of youngsters. A gala party follows, with Saint Nick handing out presents to all.
