Captain Rescued From Sinking Ship Flying Enterprise
Courageous Capt. Kurt Carlsen, who stuck to his foundering ship the “Flying Enterprise” during anxious days following a hurricane, is rescued when the freighter finally goes down, only fifty miles from harbor and safety. Late news films show terrific waves lashing the crippled ship, from which Capt. Carlsen radios his plight to U.S. destroyer.
President Harry S. Truman Warns Congress Of War Peril
In his State of the Union address before the reconvened Congress, Pres. Truman warns the U.S. of the ever-present menace of aggression, and calls for a united effort in an election year to strive for strength and unity. Mr. Truman also blasts Russia’s refusal to accept the West’s disarmament program.
New British Catapult For Aircraft Carriers Is Demonstrated
British carrier at sea demonstrates new catapult that can get aircraft aloft even while ship is at anchor. Film shows various stages of tests, from dead weight and pilotless plane which were designed to test the strength of the seam-driven catapult and then crash into the ocean to jets of the future taking off and taking the carrier battlegroup into the modern era.
Fire Sweeps Through Atlantic City NJ
Worst fire in history of the famed ocean resort sweeps through two city blocks, destroying four hotels and thirteen homes in its path. The famed Congress Hotel goes up in smoke.
