"Habemus Papam" we have a Pope. Exultant throngs in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City receive the signal from the Cardinals' conclave in the Sistine Chapel that a new Pope has been chosen. Image of white smoke from Sistine Chapel. Elevated to the Papal Throne is Cardinal Roncalli, who adopts the name of John XXIII. One of his first acts, after giving his benediction to the rejoicing thousands, is a plea for world peace.
