French Farmers Protest President DeGaulle Farm Policies
Angry farmers throughout France block road and rail traffic in protest to President DeGaulle's farm policies. Cut-price pork imports have hurt the pig farmers. Their demonstration leads the government to halt low cost pork imports and study ways toward a permanent settlement.
Auto Industry Showcases The New Tot Guard
Detroit comes up with "Tot Guard," a child safety device to decrease injuries from car accidents. It's a plastic shield which protects the child from being hurled against the dashboard or windshield. A demonstration with a child crash-dummy placed into a Tot Guard during a automobile crash test to prove its effectiveness.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower Celebrates Birthday
Former President Eisenhower observes his 77th birthday with a Washington church cornerstone ceremony and party, where he avoids the "Hawks vs. Doves" issue, urging a peace with Vietnam on honorable terms.
Hindus Celebrate Festival Of Dussehra
Thousands of Hindus celebrate the annual festival of "Dussehra” (Vijayadashami) the legendary religious triumph of good over evil. A parade and night-time fireworks display ends with the burning of effigies representing evil.
New York City Hula Hoop Championship
A New York City hula-hoop champion is chosen in a Central Park final. The kids show hip-wiggling skill at whirling the hoops around their necks, waists, even ankles with the energy of a downtown "whirling dervish."
College Football: USC vs. Notre Dame
U.S.C. beats Notre Dame, 24-7, for their fourth consecutive victory, and their first win at South Bend since 1939. College football phenom O.J. Simpson scores three T.D.'s for the Trojans who intercept the Terry Hanratty-to-Jim Seymouth combination five times.
78th Velka Pardubice Steeplechase
The 78th annual Pardubice Steeplechase in Czechoslovakia has 26 of the best horse-and-rider combinations in Europe off the starting mark, with several bad spills; the four-mile event is won by the Russian horse, "Dresden."
