California Commuter Train Wreck Kills 29 Injures 142
The wreck of train No. 82 at Redondo Junction the evening of January 22, 1956, created quite a sensation in Los Angeles, California. Speeding around a curve, shortly after leaving the Los Angeles station, a San Diego bound commuter train leaves the rail and overturns, killing 29 and injuring 142, most of them service men returning to the naval base in San Diego after furlough. The wreck is one of the worst in California's railroad history.
