1940 Democratic National Convention. Democrat Party leaders and delegates arrive in Chicago by train for the job of "picking" a presidential candidate. With F.D.R.'s name heading the list, the Democratic vice-presidential band-wagon overflows with "favorite sons".

Democrats back Wendell Willkie (a former Democrat turned Republican) nomination. Several influential Democrats back Guy Warren, whose "Willkie for President" campaign is one of the novelties of the convention!

Postmaster General James "Jim" Farley calls the convention to order (audio)! Speaker Bankhead delivers the keynote address (audio).

The Republican presidential candidate, Wendell Willkie, is cheered by thousands as he arrives in Denver, Colorado for a vacation. He attends an old-fashioned barbecue as a guest of Gov. Ralph Carr and his appetite is "A-1" as he prepares to begin his campaign.
