NANKING – The Chinese Nationalist capital becomes a ghost city as the government and thousands of citizens use every means of transportation to evacuate the city. Reds massed across the river threaten to take over hourly.

ISTANBUL – The former leader of the Greek orthodox church in America is elevated to the highest rank in colorful ceremonies attended by dignitaries of many nations.

RECORD NARCOTIC HAUL
NEW YORK - $3,000,000 worth of narcotics are seized in the largest haul in police history. Joseph Basile, accused of being king pin in the drug ring is arrested.

FOURTY YEARS OLD
GALVESTON – That is, four of them are ten years old. The Badgett quads celebrate their birthday, which as usual becomes something of a civic event.

INDIA - A year after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, thousands gather at the site of his cremation to pay him homage, leave flowers and pray.

LEAVENWORTH, WASH. – Top flight skiers try out the “Big Hill” and the results are spectacular. Many leaps exceed 250 ft. and the winning jump of 260 ft. is made by George Thrane, Norwegian student.

Saint Paul stages again its famous winter pageant and King Boreas XII, Clarence A. Maley in real life, is crowned, following a colorful procession. At Dartmouth, the traditional ice carnival produces some of the finest ice sculpture in the history of the event.

ATLANTIC CITY – 30,000 bowlers compete for bowling’s jackpot, $350,000 in prizes. They come from 980 cities of the U.S. and Canada for the 57 day tournament. The kig keglers are all there.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The 82nd fighter group proves what it can do under winter conditions. With pre-heated engines they get off in short order with heavy bomb and ammunition loads.

DE GAULLE SOUNDS WARNING OF COUP
LILLE, FRANCE – Gen. De Gaulle addresses a huge crowd and warns that if he cannot attain power by means of the ballot, he may take other measures to combat left wing elements.

HELP TO CHINA
BANGOR, WASH. – Thousands of tons of supplies leave on navy transports for beleagured Nationalist forces. Despite the desperate plight of the government forces, the material is dispatched.

HOLLAND – Shades of Lon Chaney. Makeup artists display their skills and turn normal looking human begins into something that should be haunting houses.

MILESTONES IN AVIATION
The navy sets a new record as the Caroline Mars flying boat carries 218 passengers from San Diego to Alameda. Another Navy first is the Martin Mauler, largest and fastest carrier based attack plane, it takes off with 9,000 pounds of bombs and rockets. A new wrinkle is added to soaring at San Diego, as a towing winch yanks the gliders off the ground at 25 miles per hour, during the Soaring Championships.

VOLCANIC ERUPTION
HAWAII – Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano again comes to life, sending tons of lava down its slopes. Night pictures give a graphic picture of the patterns.

U.S. ENVOY RETURNS
NEW YORK – Selden Chapin, minister to Hungary, whose ouster was demanded by the Communist government, returns for consultations with the state department.

PRINCESS ON SKIS
AUSTRIA – Holland’s two Princesses, Beatrix and Irene, tackle the hazardous sport in the beautiful mountains of Tyrol.

30 DIE IN TRAIN WRECK
SPAIN – Thirty persons are killed as a train is derailed and plunges down an embankment. Communist sabotage is blamed for the wreck.

HUSKIES START TRAINING
SEATTLE – A crop of 175 oarsmen shows up to vie for places on the Washington championship crew. They really make those shells move.

SKI RECORD FALLS
IRON MOUNTAIN, MICH. – The American record of 289 feet is surpassed in five leaps, as the country’s top jumpers put on a superb performance.

A new dimension in military history is made as a B-50 bomber takes off from Fort Worth and returns without stop, refueling in mid-air at four points and covering 23,500 miles in 94 hours.

NEW YORK – Cardinal Spellman, after futile negotiations with striking grave-diggers in two cemeteries, enlists students for priesthood and leads grave digging operations for 1020 unburied dead.

SPAIN – When two rams meet in the Basque country it’s a headache. They don’t give up until one of them is off his feet. The wear and tear on skulls is terrific.

NEW YORK – Gene Tunney, former heavy weight champion and Levi Jackson, captain of the Yale football team are made chairman and vice-chairman of the Urban League’s Campaign to advance job opportunity for the colored.

NEW ORLEANS – Once again Mardi Gras comes to the Delta City, more colorful, more sparkling than ever. Rex is King and revelry is the order.

PARIS – Milliners in this fashion center go all out with their creations for spring. Straw, fruit and wicker – and the results are enchanting.

NEW YORK – After seven months off the coast of South America, a whaler puts into drydock for a complete beauty treatment. Forty tons of barnacles are scraped from her bull.

GERMANY – After refusing to leave the American zone after a deadline had been set by General Clay, eight members of a Soviet repatriation committee are blockaded by M.P.’s in their Frankfort quarters. After thirty-four hours they had enough and left.

PORTUGAL – President Carmino, after 22 years in office, again gets office as thousands of Porto citizens jam the streets to give him an ovation.

GALE BATTERS DUTCH COAST
HOLLAND – Winds reaching one hundred miles an hour sweep in from the North sea and beach a Swedish cargo vessel. Courageous rescue operations save the crew.

URANIUM DISCOVERY
FRANCE – The tiny village of Saint Sylvestre is wild with excitement as uranium is found beneath its wheat fields. Engineers and scientists waste no time in surveying the atomic bonanza.

THE LIFE OF RILEY
CINCINNATI – Crowds throng to see William Bendix and his cast as Universal-International’s film based on the radio program, has its premiere.

PYRAMIDS SWEEP COUNTRY
