FIRST PICTURES RESTORATION OF KARNAK
LUXOR, EGYPT – The ancient Temple of Karnak is being restored to its original grandeur and splendor of 4,000 years ago, which earned it a niche in the eternal Wonders of the World. The entire operation is a study in gigantic proportions; the massive size of the structures and their component parts; the tremendous research activities of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, and the efforts of the Egyptian Department of Antiquities.

KEY WEST, FLORIDA – Pres. Truman greets friends and advisors, and the press, as he enjoys two week vacation in Southern climes.

INTERNATIONAL FIRES
In Amsterdam, Holland, centuries-old warehouse goes up in flames, causing heavy losses. In South London, England, 20 people are injured in spectacular fire which brings back painful memories of blitz days. WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Dean Acheson, meets with envoys from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Norway to put the finishing touches on the mutual assistance treaty for western nations.

67 WAR ORPHANS FIND U.S. HAVEN
NEW YORK – Waifs from Europe’s rubble arrive at International Airport to begin life anew in America. Bread is strange to them, and oranges unheard of. They will find foster parents in this country.

ZIONIST APPEAL FOR PALESTINE
NEW YORK – The United Jewish Appeal delegation returns from a visit to Palestine. They are joined by Foreign Minister Moshe Sharrett who will seek aid for the new nation.

FIRE DESTROYS ARMY PIER
OAKLAND – Fire roars through the 1,000 foot pier at the army base here, causing one million dollars in damage and injuring five fire-fighters.

FIRST ISRAELI SHIP DEDICATED
NEW YORK – The Haifa, first ship to fly the Jewish flag in the western hemisphere is dedicated with flag raising ceremonies.

THE IRISH ARE ON THE MARCH
NEW YORK – Sunny skies beam on the Irish as their colorful parade swings down Fifth Avenue to the lilt of Irish pipes and laughter.

SKI MEET
SNOQUOLMIE, WASH. – The elite of jumpers again put on their hair-raising act at Milwaukee. No records broken, but neither were any homes.

BRITISH CLOTHES RATIONING ENDED
After eight long years, Britons may now purchase clothing and household linens without coupons, and they go on a buying spree.

NEW YORK – As delegates from Russia, Czecho-Slovakia and Poland arrive for the Cultural and Scientific Conference for World Peace, U.S. sentiment attacks it as a Red sounding board for propaganda.

CHINESE TROOPS TRAIN U.S. FASHION
FORMOSA – Ex GI’s will remember their basic training, as they watch this. The machine gun bullets are fired 24 inches over the trainees heads.

NEW YORK – New York’s swank Park avenue becomes a battleground in the cold war, as hundreds of pickets oppose the Cultural and Scientific conference for World Peace.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY
NEW YORK – In colorful costumes, Greeks, joined by city officials parade Fifth avenue in celebration of the one hundred and twenty eighth anniversary of their independence.

TORNADOES KILL 29
A series of twisters rip through the south and southwest, leaving 29 dead and hundreds injured. England, Arkansas is virtually leveled.

ACADEMY AWARDS
LOS ANGELES – Filmdom’s great gather to hear Sir Lawrence Olivier awarded the Oscar for his performance in Hamlet – an Arthur Rank production, released by Universal-International. Hamlet, itself was voted the best picture of the year.

ARGENTINA GETS NEW CONSTITUTION
BUENOS AIRES – It’s a gala occasion in the capital as Argentina’s new constitution is adapted. A display of military might parades before President Peron.

GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLE CHASE
ENGLAND – Russian Hero romps home, the winner in the hundred and third running of the Grand National and pays his buckers sixty-six to one.

LOS ANGELES – War time measures are again applied. Oil flares along the municipal airport runways dispel fog up to four hundred feet.

ATLANTIC PACT ENVOYS ARRIVE
NEW YORK – The Queen Mary brings Prime Minister Paul Henri Spaak of Belgium, and Foreign Minister Bevin of Great Britain, accompanied by Hector McNeil, minister of state. Deputy foreign minister Gromyko of Russia is a fellow passenger but definitely not a signer of the pact.

EGG BEATER DRIVES SHIP
NEW YORK – The cycloidal propellor on an Army tug makes the vessel do tricks that even the camera can’t improve on. It stops on a dime, turns on a dime and leaves you feeling like a beaten egg.

SPRING FLEECING
CANADA – The sheep country of Canada becomes one vast clip joint, 50,000 sheep are rounded up for shearing. Smart dogs help in this 300,000 pound crop.

OXFORD-CAMBRIDGE CLASSIC
ENGLAND – For the one hundred and twentieth time, England’s oldest universities tangle in their annual crew race, and Cambridge noses out a hairbreadth victory over their tradition rival.

SKIING IN THE TREES
FLORIDA – Literally that’s what takes place at Cypress Gardens as Willa Worthington threads her way on water skis through the groves, mangroves and palms. Most of it’s too close for comfort.

WASHINGTON – Twelve of the western democratic nations solemnly enter into a joint defense treaty – the first such peace-time alliance in America’s history. President Truman calls it a “shield against aggression.

CHURCHILL SAYS BOMB CHECKS REDS
BOSTON – Warning of Russian aggression, Britain’s war time Prime Minister, says that only the atomic bomb in U.S. hands has slowed Russian expansion over Western Euope.

EAST-WEST CAGERS MEET
NEW YORK – Madison Square crowds thrill to the hand-picked basketball stars who tangle in their fourth meeting. The East wins with a hair-raising finish for a one point triumph.

A CROOKED RACE
SEATTLE – Outboard speedsters tear around a course that winds through cow pastures and has some turns that would break a snake’s back. The Sammamish River provides a real aquatic barbecue.

74 DIE IN HOSPITAL TRAGEDY
EFFINGHAM, ILL. – Worst hospital tragedy of modern day turns 80-year old structure into raging inferno and takes lives of 74 innocent victims. Despite valiant efforts of many heroes and heroines, 13 newly-born babies are numbered among the casualties.

FINAL ARMY DAY PARADE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Pres. Truman and Sec. of Defense Louis Johnson review stirring Army Day Parade which is marked by crack marching units of all the armed forces – and by the fact that this is the last time in which Army Day will be observed. With the merging of the armed forces, the future celebration will be termed, “Armed Forces Day.”

SUN VALLEY, IDAHO – An international ski meet at Sun Valley, draws some of the world’s expert ski artists, to enjoy the competition and the matchless scenery of the Golden West.

SAN MARINO, CAL. – Superhuman engineering operations are undertaken to save Kathy Fiscus, entomed 95 feet below ground in an abandoned artesian well. Men risk their lives, but Kathy is found dead after 54 hours.

CORINTH CANAL RE-OPENED
GREECE – The historic canal that cuts through the Corinth Peninsula was destroyed during the German retreat. The King and Queen join in festivities which mark the re-opening of the canal restored by U.S. engineers and Marshall Plan funds.

GENERAL IKE COORDINATES
KEY WEST – General Eisenhower becomes President Truman’s trouble shooter as he gathers chiefs of staff of the armed services, to iron out internal problems.

BABY SWIMMERS
LOS ANGELES – They range from eleven weeks old to an aged two years, but they make like porpoises with a built-in dog paddle.

MOTORBIKE MANIACS
FRANCE – In la belle France, these saddle jockeys call it sport, but this roller coaster derby looks like a prelude to murder.

EARTHQUAKE SHAKES PACIFIC NO. WEST
Without warning, one of the most severe earthquakes of recent years strikes the teeming cities of the Pacific North West. Seven are killed in the brief two minute quake, while property damage mounts to over $20,000,000.

THE FALLAS OF VALENCIA
VALENCIA, SPAIN – All year long, the work-shops of Valencia are busy constructing effigys, which are ceremoniously burned on St. Joseph’s Day. Popular and political figures are burlesqued, finally to be consumed in flames. A spectacular fireworks demonstration closes the fete.

TWO STRIKES ON DIMAGGIO
The baseball world is shaken as “The Yankee Clipper” is side-lined by a recurrence of his heel injury. His future playing days are in jeopardy, and all fans anxiously await the return of this true “King of the Diamond.”

CARE
Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. makes an effective and dramatic appeal for the support of CARE – whose activities may mean life or death to hundreds of thousands of unfortunates in other lands.

CANADIAN ICE SPECTACLE
MONTREAL – The Montreal Ice Carnival is replete with thrills as Indian dances, and football games are staged. But the crowning climax is the appearance of Barbara Ann Scott and her masterful exhibition on the flashing blades.
