PALESTINE – Land mines, grim legacy of the Arab war, are removed and detonated so that little ones can travel the roads with safety.

JAPANESE WOMEN HAVE THEIR DAY
JAPAN – On the anniversary of women’s suffrage in Japan, women take over the government of Utsunomiya, from mayoress on down, and the men relinquish their posts politely.

OVER IN A BARREL
NIAGARA FALLS – The rapids shooting Hills doing it again. But this time “Red” Hill gets a broken leg after a two-hour ride in the turbulent waters. A thrilling rescue gets him out whole.

LOS ANGELES – The French have a name for them – bathing suits. But on Southern California lovelies, there’s no name for them, just an exclamation.

HOT SPRINGS, ARK. – Even the football great can learn a few tricks. Top-flight coaches, including Frank Leahy of Notre Dame gather to swap know-how, using a high school squad as guinea pigs.

CANADA – At Cardston, Alberta, Indians gather to have their chests X-rayed, and get paid for it by the government, at the rate of five dollars per chest. Of course, it’s treaty money but still five bucks.

FRANCE – Instead of resting his aching bunions, the French mail carrier stages a spirited walking race to prove that he can take it.

ENGLAND – If life gets boring try driving a motorcycle at sixty miles through a flaming barrier, a pile of barrels, or a pane of glass. Guaranteed to cure a headache.

SEATTLE, WASH. – Clifford Thompson, 27, is eight feet seven inches tall and weighs 460 pounds. The camera shows a few of his living problems.

6,000 DIE IN EQUADOR QUAKE
QUITO – Six thousand are dead, 25,000 are injured and 100,000 homeless as earthquake devastates six towns in the heart of the country. Americans join in the rescue work.

COAST GUARD HAS BIRTHDAY
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – As the coast guard celebrates its 159th birthday the newest thing in amphibious helicopters is demonstrated and the coast guard’s oldest ally, the surf boat, is put through its paces.

THAT’S MY BABY
CHICAGO – The new Universal-International film makes its bow with plenty of babies in attendance, as well as the stars of the picture.

PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT HERE
WASHINGTON – President Elpidio Quirino of the Philippines is welcomed at the airport by President Truman and members of the cabinet.

MANGRUM WINS TAM O’SHANTER
CHICAGO – Lloyd Mangrum coming from behind picks up the marbles and the paycheck in rich Tam O’Shanter golf grind.

CANADA – It’s 95 degrees outside, but inside the National Research Council’s test laboratory, technicians frizzle in the deep freeze, testing new Arctic equipment.

DUTCH PRINCES GO RIDING
HOLLAND – While proud Mother, Queen Juliana, looks on, Princess Beatrix and Irene demonstrate their skill in the saddle. The sisters win prizes during a colorful horse show.

OLD SWIMMING HOLE – BERLIN
BERLIN – Amongst the bomb-blasted ruins of Berlin, youngsters find a place to swim. It’s not like the old swimming hole we recall, but it serves these hardy youngsters well.

CHICAGO – In the first big game of the year, the Eagles ride roughshod over the All-Star gridders before an appreciative throng. Final score – Eagles 38, All-Stars 0.

POST, TEXAS – The original All-Junior Rodeo gives the small-fry cowhands an afternoon of thrills, and a few bumps when the Brahma bulls get the upper hand.

AKRON, OHIO – Youngsters from all parts of the U.S. gather for the All-American Soap Box Derby, and who should win but 15-year old Fred Derks… of Akron, Ohio.

CONGRESS PROBES FIVE-PERCENTERS
WASHINGTON – The Congressional probe into the dealings of the Five-Percenters brings out new and startling testimony. An ex-Gov’t. official testifies he was threatened with the loss of his job if he didn’t help a firm represented by influential persons. Sen. McCarthy demands perjury prosecution against John Maragon.

AIR CRASH SURVIVORS LAND
IRELAND – Rescue ships bring first survivors ashore of the ill-fated airliner that crashed off the coast. Nine were killed when the craft ran out of gas and landed in the ocean.
WINDSOR LOCKS, CONN. – Famed aviatrix Ruth Nichols, and other surviving crew members, return home by air.

EUROPE STRIVES FOR UNITY
STRASBURG – The dream of a unified Europe comes nearer to reality, when Winston Churchill and other leaders hold first session of the Council of Europe. “Winnie” gets big ovation when he speaks in French.

HELICOPTERS FLY OFF CARRIER
Navy and Marine Corps cameramen recorded these gripping pictures of transport helicopters going into action. Taking off from the deck of a carrier, the big craft fly Marines ashore for amphibious maneuvers at Quantico, Va.

FRENCH FOREST FIRES
FRANCE – First films of the devastating woodland fires that swept across thousands of acres of rich timberland near Bordeaux. Eighty lost their lives before the holocaust was finally brought under control. Hundreds of homes were razed.

EARTHQUAKE AFTERMATH
ECUADOR – Two weeks after! Scenes of death and destruction in quake-ravaged towns high in the Andes. Rescue teams bring out the dead and injured, as planes drop food by parachute and fly in much needed supplies.

FILM STAR “ELECTED” MAYOR
TOLUCA LAKE, CALIF. – Lovely Ann Blyth of Hollywood goes in for local politics. With an assist from Mayor Bowron of L.S., Miss Blyth is made an honorary mayor.

GLAMOR ON GAY WHITE WAY
NEW YORK – The world premiere of “Sword In The Desert,” at Broadway’s Criterion Theatre, finds celebrities and Mr. Public mingling for the gala opening. The film’s star, Marta Toren, receives a scroll from Yvonne DeCarlo.

BEAUTY QUEENS LET DOWN HAIR!
PALISADES PARK, N.J. – In a new approach to this business of picking a queen, pretty girls show only their faces and hair-dos to the judges. But our cameraman goes behind the scenes!

DEATH ON THE DIRT TRACK
SILERSTONE, ENGLAND – A driver is killed during the International Trophy race, as horrified thousands look on. But the race goes on, and the Italian Ascari flashes home first to cop the coveted cup.

CLARK, MCGRATH SWORN IN
WASHINGTON – A big day in the nation’s Capital! Chief Justice Vinson administers the oath to our new Justice, Tom Clark. Then Senator McGrath is sworn in as Attorney General, and is succeeded as party chairman by William Boyle of Kansas City.

TRUMAN ATTENDS LEGION CONVENTION
PHILADELPHIA – Pres. Truman takes part in the 31st annual convention of the American Legion. At Convention Hall, he addresses the Legionnaires and is presented with the group’s Distinguished Service Medal.

HURRICANE LASHES FLORIDA
FLORIDA – Dramatic pictures of the terrible storm that lashes many parts of the citrus state, leaving only two dead but damage that runs in the many millions. Winds of 150 miles per hour velocity are recorded during the storm.

U.S. RETAINS DAVIS CUP
FOREST HILLS – The coveted tennis trophy stays in the U.S., following the fourth and deciding match, between Ted Schroeder and Frank Sedgman of Australia. The big Californian wins in straight sets.

FDR GREAT GRANDCHILD POSES
PORTLAND, ORE. – Nicholas Delano Roosevelt, aged three weeks, poses for his first newsreel pictures. With his mother, the former “Sistie” Dall, and father, Van Seagraves, the great grand-child of the late Pres. Roosevelt.

PENDLETON ROUND-UP
PENDLETON, ORE. – The 38th edition of the colorful jamboree finds hundreds of Indians joining in the festivities, and the usual spectacular action of cowboys riding the bucking bronchos.

THE LEGION ON PARADE
PHILADELPHIA – Over a million people cheer American Legion veterans of two world wars as they step out, 60,000 strong, in one of their noisest and most colorful parades. Putting aside convention matters, the Legionnaires put on a bang-up show.

VAUGHAN AND MARAGON TESTIFY IN SENATE “FIVE PERCENT” PROBE
WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman’s aide, General Harry Vaughan, and John Maragon, the man who once held a White House pass, take the stand before the Senate’s inquiry. Vaughan denies using his influence to aid the “five percenters,” while Maragon refuse to answer most questions on the grounds of self-incrimination.

COAST GUARD SAVES POLIO VICTIM
AT SEA – Speeding to the aid of a passenger ill with polio on a British liner, the Coast Guard flies a doctor and an “Iron Lung” to Halifax; there transfers them to a cutter, and finally to the ship at sea. A dramatic story of mid-Ocean heroism!

THE ICE CAPADES OF 1950
ATLANTIC CITY – Spectacular action and glamour on ice – and comedy laughs. In a special preview of the new ice show, Donna Atwood and many others thrill thousands with dazzling routines on flashing blades.
