TORONTO – First films of the terrible fire that sweeps the Great Lakes cruise ship “Noronic” at her pier. More than 120 are known dead and scores missing. Fortunate survivors tell dramatic stories of their escape from the inferno that caught many passengers in their cabins.

BRITAIN REACTS TO DEVALUATION ENGLAND – A tense London is the scene of wild bidding in gold shares as Sir Stafford Cripps announces devaluation of the pound to $2.80. Brokers form an impromptu curb market before the closed stock exchange.

FRENCH – An alcohol refinery, struck by lightening explodes and spreads flaming alcohol over the surrounding neighborhood firemen fight a desperate battle against rivers of liquid fire.

ENGLAND – After trailing in early matches, American pros come from behind to win again the Ryder Cup. To do it they had to win six of the sight singles matches.

Pres. Truman’s surprise announcement that Russia now possesses the atom bomb makes big headlines in the U.S. The electrifying news brings instant response, from United Nations delegates meeting at Flushing Meadows. Assembly President Romulo says the news means that the world now must strive harder for atomic controls. Meanwhile, at Hanford, Washington security measures are increased at the great plutonium plant.
